Hi All,
I've got a T68i on O2. Alongside my voice tariff, I also have a GPRS data subscription.
I've rung up O2 to try and get MMS activated, but they tell me that as I have GPRS activated, I can't have MMS activated as well.
I've seen several posts which seem to suggest that it is possible, so are O2 talking rubbish?
If they are correct, I'm going to have to wait until my next billing period, which is at the beginning of January.
All thoughts and advice much appreciated.

Yup ,just been told the same ,this is utter bollocks, surely MMS works over GPRS, it worked about 5 times on my paygo online tarriff, so it can work. Had it switched over to MMS only will see if this fixes the 'user barred massage'. The real truth is they are blocking the traffic, technical difficulties my @ss!!!!!!!!
Really these useless companies need to sort out there customer relations, 10 billion pounds on 3g, it will be a ferkin fiasco!!!!!

u can use MMS but not though the access point mobile.o2.co.uk
and this is the one u need to use the real web and instant messaging....
I am on o2 UK and bought a nokia 7650...the reason i bought this phone was because i could use them REAL web and instant messenger. At first this was fine and it all worked. However, i then acitvated MMS....and it then disabled my instant messenger and html web access.
The reasin for this is beacuse to use instant messenger and html web i need to use a different acess point from wap and email. I need to use mobile.o2.co.uk.
Once MMS hasd been activated it then disables use to that acces point.
So basically i can no longer use MSN (IM+) and webviewer.
I am now thinking of getting an unlocked SPV. but i need to know if the use of MSN and I.E. on an SPV requires a different access point or can it use the standard wap access point?

Thats piss poor-u can have mms & gprs together on orange and other nets aswel probably
Posted by marknicholls
u can have GPRS WAP......just not real web.
u could not use ther wen on a laptop for example if u have MMS set up. its just incredable
Posted by marknicholls
might buy an spv and use that for web and email. keep 7650 on o2 for voice and sms
Posted by wapchimp
U stil thinking of doin that?
Posted by marknicholls
well, i am now o2 will not let me use my 7650 to its full potential....

I was told it would be fixed in January, yeah just as the free period runs out!!!!!!!!!!

I you used to be genie paygo, then you'll be o2 online now, download the settings from o2 website, mms and gprs wap, then switch your phone off/on, if it doesn't work you'll need to contact o2 online 50pmin
Posted by marknicholls
can u use it even if your on genie? i thought u had to change to an o2 tarrif?
Thanks
Posted by bigjobs
GENIE has merged into o2 online, they sent me a mail saying they would stand by my unlimited free wap/texts, as long as I don't take the piss. I've not had to change the tariff myself, I'm just an online customer now.

If you are on o2 PAYG then you will need to call up and get your phone GPRS/MMS enabled - its something we switch here.
Should be free of charge cos we are all splendidly nice fellas and lasses, dont'chaknow

unfortunately, it doesn't surprise me with o2. they can't tell what network a call is to, they charge it as a call to whichever network the number originated on. so, if you ring someone who ported his number into o2 from orange from your o2 mobile outside of your free minutes, you will be charged a x network call even though its o2 - o2!

If this is true, then I am really surprised at O2!
I hv just ported my number from Orange to O2 and
should get the first bill in just over a week.
Also, when I type my number in the o2.co.uk HELP
page, it does not recognize it as an O2 number,
soon it'll b 1month with O2.
I'll wait till I get the bill and then take it from there.
Actually, if this is happening to everyone, we should all
try and get this sorted !
Jalu, please can we hv your thoughts on this issue.
Thnx.

Well...what can I say?
It is true that if a number ports to us the call charges do not class the user as a 'proper' o2 customer.
The way I have always been told about this is that the donor network operator retains ownership of the mobile number and any calls to that number still go through the original network, which is why its charged.
That sounded a bit complicated...basically if a call is made to a ported in number it goes:
caller dials -> o2 checks number, sees its originally another network -> original network -> person receiving call answers.
Something like that, anyway. I am an MNP advisor [I deal with moving numbers backwards and forwards between networks] and I hear a lot of complaints about it but nothing is being done, at least not that I have heard.
There are packages available on Contract that give free minutes to people whatever network and Prepay has Pay and Go Wild which gives you 50 mins and 50 text for £10 a month which temporarily eliminates x-network charge problems, but I know its a sticker.
Regarding the ported in number not showing up on the o2 self help screen, this should be fixed soon afaik. I don't think its permanent but that sounds distinctly like o2 online and I'm not o2 online, I'm 'normal' o2 prepay.

I have just phoned o2 and got GPRS enabled on my number. I am currently using a Genie sim card (now o2 online I believe). Now, could you please tell me if I will be charged for using GPRS and if so how much? I've used it a little bit and I haven't been charged yet. Please could you clarify the pricing for me? Thanks in advance.
Posted by marknicholls
can u use MMS if you have an old genie card? i thought u had to migrate to a new o2 tarrif?
Posted by virtualtears
Well phone o2 customer care and ask them.
Posted by jalu
An old Genie card is just as good as an o2 card, there's no difference.
@virtualtears - Are you prepay or contract?
Jalu
Posted by virtualtears
I am on prepay (£10 a month to renew free SMS and minutes).

I have o2 payngo tariff wit mms switched on,however i an growing ever frustrated at o2 customer service as i had great difficulty getting that sorted. They do not seem to train their nobodies stuck in the call centres properly. Feedback tells me that only tmobile know what they doing, although i cannot verify this. 3g is a worrying prospect!

@adamts
Chill man, MMS is quite new and not everybody picks things up as fast as others, yanno? The training is good but give it time.
Regarding 3G, its worth noting that o2 has a fully operational 3g network up and running on the Isle of Man. Yes its a small island and yes the number of subscribers does not reflect the UK but its a very successful testbed for 3G and all has been going well on it.
@virtualtears
I've checked out the official prices here and the truth is we just don't know how much GPRS will cost on prepay. As far as I can tell its not really available on Prepay just yet and is only used for MMS.

OK sounds good to me
Posted by adamts
I am writing this on wap gprs and on payngo tho? Jalo thanks 4 reply. You work 4 o2 i take it?
Posted by adamts
By the way apologies 4 the double post earlier, guess what network froze on me!lol

@ adamts
I have to admit I don't know how much GPRS on prepay costs. Again I have to admit that I didn't think GPRS worked on Prepay whatsoever.
I know it can be used for MMS and MMS are free until next year and after that will cost 40p, but I didn't think GPRS worked on prepay for any other methods.
The best thing I can suggest is check your balance before and after every call. The chances are the rate you are paying now will not change until after MMS becomes chargable.
Your best bet then is to make a short test call and see how much it costs.
Yes, I work for o2 prepay customer care [no call queues at the moment!!]

Yeah makes sense. Will do. Jalu thanks 4 advice you are worth knowing. ;-) I was aware of the 3g trials in iom,but my point was that i feel that o2 will naturally need 2 improve customer service 4 it 2 succeed. Based on current experiences there is a lot 2 do,for all companies. Whether us consumers are willing 2 pay silly money 4 it is another matter. Then again the phone cos paid silly money 4 the licences eh. Lol:-D

@adamts
Yeah, customer service here did stink for quite a while, I must admit.
We are hiring constantly now and have a good training scheme in place with new people coming in a lot. We are on a recovery program and are getting better, honest!
We'll probably take a hit over Christmas but all in all, we're better than we were last Christmas
Jalu
Posted by virtualtears
Can't exactly be much worse than you were last Christmas!!! I've had good experiences with payg customer support recently, besides the pesky 50p PER MINUTE CHARGE!!! What are you people thinking??!?!
Posted by jalu
@virtualtears
The thing with o2 online is that if you don't need technical help they are the best. You can't beat the deal they offer you.
However, as an o2 online subscriber myself I have to admit if you need help you're screwed.
For help, use normal o2.
Jalu
Posted by virtualtears
I very rarely need help. The online payg tariff is brilliant I agree. Is there an o2 number I can dial to get free support or something?

@ virtualtears
Nope, no free tech support I'm afraid.
FYI, o2 online has around 4000 unanswered emails last I heard.
If its any consolation, at least o2 online don't have a holding system, the phone just rings. If they had a holding system the call charges really would be astronomical!

My bother is on "Genie" but is it right he cannot use MMS as you need to move to a NEW "o2" online tarrif....as MMS can not be actibated on an old "genie" tariff?
Thanks
Posted by jalu
@marknicholls
There is no difference between Genie tariffs and o2 online tariffs.
There has been absolutely no difference at this end.
Please note, I am referring to PAYG/PAYT here - I am not a contract advisor and I do not know if there is any difference there.

You can now have MMs on the old Genie tariff but don't hold your brief. they have been tryiing to do mine now for 2 weeks, OFTEL have got involved as well now as apparetnly my account, although contract, has been run as a PAYG and therfore I have been refused services I was otherwise supposed to be able to get for the last 3 years!
O2 goes from strength to strength
lol
It's a farce, always has been since the BT/Securicor days

I've got an online PAYG o2 simcard (min £10 a month for 300tx and 300wapmins) and I just had GPRS and MMS turned on for me the other day. It took about 10days from the day I sent them an email requesting it to having it activated, not bad
One problem though... I can send out MMS messages from my T68i and get a confirmation saying that it's been acceptead and that it's been sent and the other person receives it.... but when I send them to myself.. I don't get them... I dont even get an SMS msg telling me to look at the MMS on a website or anything
Can other people that have MMS on o2 tell me what you've got for MMSC server address? Mine is http://mmsc.mms.o2.co.uk:8002

Posted by bigjobs
Well, as usual, more 02 probs, they now say that MMS and GPRS can't be enabled at same time, so I foolishly ring them up, I really should know better by now.
OK mate will change you to MMS only, right now , noo worries will be sorted mate, you can trust us ..etc
4 days later, you've guessed it.
Another beauty from O2 online, my ma takes her's to Ireland , gets 'message not sent' while using SMS, at 50p a go!!!!!!!!!!!
So she keeps trying all day then the person she is sending to sends back ' you've sent me 20 messages!!'
£10!!! THEY WILL FEEL MY WRATH MONDAY MORNING!!!!!!!!!!

sorry jalu, but thats bollocks. the number is actually the property of the customer, until they decide they don't want it anymore by changing phonelines without porting the number.
it's because o2's billing system uses the 07xxx prefix to determine which network the number started on, and no amount of ports elsewhere will convince the computer it's moved from it's original network.
however, one bright spot as far as i can see is that if everyone bought an o2 prepay sim pack, and then port the numbers elsewhere, o2 will forever think they are o2 numbers and will charge lower rates to those numbers.
screw o2.
Posted by jalu
@Black Cat
Nah, you're wrong.
But don't let that stop a perfectly good rant, maybe you should work at o2 with you being all knowledgable.
Trust me, I'm trained on this shit, I know what I'm talking about
Jalu
Posted by Black Cat
so why does this problem only affect o2?
voda, orange & t-mobile can charge a call to a number by which network it is on, so why can't o2?
