Excuse my ignorance...

HDR??

Quoi?

Posted by jcwhite_uk
In computer graphics and photography, high dynamic range imaging (HDRI) is a set of techniques that allows a far greater dynamic range of exposures (i.e. a large range of values between light and dark areas) than normal digital imaging techniques. The intention of HDRI is to accurately represent the wide range of intensity levels found in real scenes ranging from direct sunlight to the deepest shadows.

HDRI was originally developed for use with purely computer-generated images. Later, methods were developed to produce a high dynamic range image from a set of photographs taken with a range of exposures. With the rising popularity of digital cameras and easy to use desktop software, the term "HDR" is now popularly used[1] to refer to the process of tone mapping together with bracketed exposures of normal digital images, giving the end result a high, often exaggerated dynamic range. This composite technique is different from, and generally of lower quality than, the production of an image from a single exposure of a sensor that has a native high dynamic range. Tone mapping is also used to display HDR images on devices with a low native dynamic range, such as a computer screen.

Photomatix has been mentioned already which also offer a basic version for free. Another commercial package that can produce HDR is Corel's Paint Shop Pro X2. A freeware option is qtpfsgui.

Posted by arien617
Right, I'ma have a go at this as soon as my camera is found or I save up enough for a new one!

Posted by DonJuan
Yeah its really cool and makes you wanna take loads of pictures of everything. Its addictive. I like photography and tweaking things on photoshop so i'm loving it. I'm still learning all about it so hope to get better

Note to self: try out a product first before recommending to others. Paint Shop Pro X2's HDR tool is sh*t!

@ The DON

good work with these pics mate... so, what camera did you use?

a dSLR? a Point and Shoot?! or any cam that can offer F/stops?

i want to learn too!

Posted by DonJuan
i just used a canon sd850 its just a point and shoot, you just need to have the ability to change the exposure level and then boom you can do it

Posted by rockygali
ooohh, the IXUS 950 IS?! kewl... so did you use a tripod for that to make all files lined together?!

hhmm, with a tripod and a good composition...

do you think K800/810 can achieve such files to apply these techniques?!

Anyone wanting to try this might find this blog post interesting..

http://backingwinds.blogspot.[....]e-professional-hdr-images.html

you dont need lots of expensive gear unless you count shelling out on photoshop, but your camera must be able to bracket the exposure or allow you to take multi exposures at different meter/shutter speeds, the aperture setting must remain the same

yeah thats the one, yeah you must have a tripod for this, i would like to try with the k850 but like i say your gonna need a tripod because you combine 6 images all together

Photomatix and it's only like a 10 minutes job! Very easy and you can see the resoults. It could be more sharp if I haven't moved the camera when I've made the firs pics...

for like playing around, i think IPK-100 will do its job... now all i need is a good composition...

but one more thing... since you only play exposures on your images...

how bout take one quick shot (just one), then edit exposures on photoshop, like adjust brightness, contrast and stuff.. then recreate the image and merge them in HDR....

do you think it will work?!

Posted by DonJuan
you cant do that, you need to capture the highest exposure and the lowest so you get all the areas if you know what i mean. If you just take one pic you will only get one exposure and the camera can not capture all what you see, thats why we trick the camera by merging all the pics. You see?

Posted by DonJuan
here are some more i took of my friends cars for an RX8 Calendar we are doing

Posted by rockygali
question! is the accenting done while altering or composing your HDR effect?

the hotel logos at the back?! was it done while tuning your HDR or was it after tuning your HDR....

Posted by DonJuan
i just made the picture a little warmer than it originally was and then the logos came out stronger. I liked the effect
