Hi !

I use WMM but often, it counts down to give me an estimated time, but then counts back up again and it would go on forever!

I think the version is 5.1 but I am using it now so can't check.

Any ideas why ? Is it because it is crap software or is there another explanation ?

Does anyone use anything else that is free?

Any help appreciated !

On one occassion it counted down to 600 minutes to make the file, then it counter up ! I had gone out and it was up to 9,066 and counting!

so what would you use fatreg?

With Windoze.....

You won't get anything decent for free. At least not legally...

The main reason that the counter goes up and down is because it works by regularly taking a snapshot of the number of FLOPS (floating point operations per second, a measure of processing capacity or usage) that the WMM process itself is using at and dividing it by the estimated number of FLOPS required to complete the task.

This means that as your computer does other things at the same time (often background tasks), the WMM process executes less FLOPS since the processor is sharing it's capacity with other processes and so the estimated time to completion goes up. When everything in the background is finished, the WMM process gets nearly all of the processor to itself, and the estimated time goes down again.

More sophisticated systems use mathematical techniques to take this kind of fluctuation into account, but WMM apparently doesn't.

However, it should eventually finish the task no matter what the countdown timer says. If it doesn't, you may have a problem with your PC somewhere because, basic as it is, WMM is pretty stable even with large files.

Cycovision!

Your reply is very informative !!

I do do other tasks such as downloading, replying to email, and so on.

Outlook 2007 is also accessing the exchange server frequently....

then Movie Maker often slows, so I think my best plan is to just run the movie maker and watch tv etc!

I might even give Movie Maker a try with a huge task and see what happens !

edit :- I tried to make one that would be about 2 hours long, the minute counter went to 21,000 hahahahah... so I gave up. I think I will make smaller chapters!

Cycovision, can you recomment very good software and yes, I know it would cost !

Thanks again!

I think he means it needs some speed enhancing upgrades. That's how I'm taking it anyway.

Hi arien617!

What kind of speed enhancing upgrades do you have in mind ?

My machine is - Intel Core Duo 3.00 GHz 2.00 G RAM Drive only 130 Gig but got data drives via usb..

and is only 3 weeks old.

The old one's hard disk blew a chip!

Erm...

Can't do much to that, can you?

Quad core maybe? Nothing else.

Nah, an upgrade isn't the answer! I was just trying to explain (badly) why the counter jumps about. I even got it wrong as usual, it should have been the number of floating point operations (not per second) needed to finish the task divided by the current FLOPS available to the task, not the other way round

Anyway, I'm afraid I've never done any serious video editing in my life and so can't really recommend anything unfortunately

I'm wondering if file formats might have something to do with it though? Does WMM take less time to render the final video if you compress the source file(s) a little first or convert them to different formats?

You are kidding me. What about all that GPL software like Dev-C++?

@alexandra

this thread is about video editing software, which is clearly what i was talking about.

Sorry cyco.

Well I guess you can't get anything decent for free in this particular category
Sorry about how I misread your post.

@ofiaich - I used the WMM more often back then (image/video presentations) . . . I've encountered what you were saying here numerous times . . . one of the remedies I did, is to have it configured - again (making of the files: images/videos + the background music (if there's any) . . . I also made notice that SOMETIMES an icon would appear abruptly on the screen that says that my Virtual Memory is too - LOW so, that's the TIME I really gave up on it and USED Nero5 instead ! Again, there were some tipsy-turvey projects made . . . and the icon . . LOW on Virtual Memory still persists . . . so, I have no other recourse but to UPGRADE the memory of my PC . . . after which everyting went NORMAL - again ! I'm very happy with HOW those image/video presentations of PORN-materials turned-out !

Thanks especially to Cycovision and everyone.

I will just stay with WMM and make smaller chapters.

Easy that way.
