I'm looking to lose a stone, maybe two and just generally tone myself up a bit. Without going to the gym, what advice would you give me?

I've started using an ab trainer, I need to lose the gut lol. I mean its not huge but I'd like to trim down a little.

Cheers

ab trainers are not weight loss machines, they are pureley toning devices

you can't lose weight healthily unless you exercise. thats pure and simple.

you don't have to go to the gym though, you can walk, jog, run, swim, cycle etc but at the end of the day the equation is that if you want to lose weight then you have to consume more energy than you use.

unfortunately its not quite as simple as that because if you simply reduce food intake your metabolism slows down to compensate.

This is why you have to excercise in order to raise the metabolism again and keep the calories burning

there is no other magic formula unfortunately

Also drink plenty of water, it's not a magic weightloss but a lot of the time when you feel hungry it is actually thirst you are experiencing!

also eat healthy cereal for breakfast and don't skip any meals and try not to eat after 8PM

just little tips!

Unfortunately, you cannot "spot" burn fat, i.e. whatever fat you loose, is fairly evenly lost from around your entire body [where it goes from first depends on variables such as sex, age, body-shape etc.]

I mostly agree with masseurs above post, however disagree with this: "you can't lose weight healthily unless you exercise. thats pure and simple.". You can in fact loose weight healthily, by finding out how many calories you need to maintain your current weight at your current activity-level, and then cutting [from the previous figure] approximately 100-250 calories per day. Add to this by substituting more fruit and veg in your diet, and you should see a gradual and healthy weight-loss. The key is to not crash diet, cut a little bit gradually, and it'll most likely stay off.

Im on the same quest got a little gut that needs to go before it gets out of control! My mums lost 9 stone! So im pretty clued up
The best way is to make small changes to your lifestyle, A
healthy breakfast like porridge is a great start as it fills you up then a healthy dinner, baked potato or pasta so it will fill you up till tea time and make sure you eat every 3 hours to keep your metabolism up, have a banana or something healthy.Have slightly smaller portions of food and Try cut sugar out completely, and count your calories i saw a bag of crisps today with 450 calories!! Thats almost a quarter of a males daily intake! You should be aiming for about 2000 a day! Eat plenty of veg and you can eat plenty of chicken (not fried or in breadcrumbs) as its a speed food and will burn off quickly!
Also any Aerobic exercise is brilliant for burning fat, make sure you really push yourself,You should be breathing hard and a light sweat any more than that and you will be do yourself damage! its proven that if you have bursts of intense exercise say on your bike for 30 seconds then go easy for a minute or 2 then again for 30 seconds for as long as you can you will burn fat a lot faster. Exercising before a meal will also boost your metabolism and you will burn off your food quicker.
Ive started mountain biking down the woods near my house that takes an hour and have been doing it everyday for two weeks and have already noticed a difference, ive just cut down on my food intake and stopped eating ready meals and easy food, im cooking real food eating loads of veg, you can eat as much as you want! it makes such a difference! Ready meals are packed with so much shite! And make sure you eat at the right times try have tea at 6, late night eating is really bad for you!
Also using an ab exerciser will just tone up your muscle underneath your fat! You need to do Aerobic exercise to burn fat and eat less

hope ive helped

some tips(some of which have already been mentioned)
-drink lots of water (but not too much. never drink too much water because it can kill you. remember leah betts)
-increase fibre intake. fibre absorbs fat in the bloodstream
-eat lots of low calorie stuff. masseur made A VERY VERY GOOD POINT! the more you eat, the faster your metabolism becomes. the less you eat, the slower your metabolism becomes. eating lots of low calories
stuff has the effect of making your body think that it's getting a 5 course meal, so it speeds up. lowering your food intake can have disastrous consequences if trying to lose weight because, if you go out and pig out, your body believes that you're getting a 10 course meal and so you will put on weight heavily from those times. the important thing to note here is that, even through it will take many months for your metabolism to speed up, the effect is long term and makes weight loss after that an easy job
-AVOID fizzy drinks
-avoid coffee and booze (coffee dehydrates)
-eat a big breakfast rather than a big tea. your metabolism is highest in the morning and least active at night
-don't eat midnight snacks
-eat things like bananas rather than chocolate because bananas give a slow release of energy rather than a quick high (which is what chocolate does)
-do some swimming, and make it regular

btw it's not true that you can't lose weight without excercise.

always opt for diet or light versions of food you can't resist.
but the EASIEST way of losing weight is to
EAT BREAKFAST (healthy one)
Eat a small bite of your meal and relax for 10 minutes before eating the rest
Eat 5 times a day.

I don't think that he is planning on taking Ecsatsy as a diet pill! Leah betts consumed 7 litres of water in 90 mins, and if it hadn't been for the Ecstasy pill she had taken her body would have processed the water like anybody else's would have through urination!

@brightspark

sorry you are wrong! whilst you might be right about water intoxification sadly in the case of Leah Betts had she of not taken the Ecstasy pill she WOULD have survived as pointed out in her inquest http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leah_Betts

the ecstacy was a complication. leah betts: cause of death: water intoxication. and given that exercise may be involved for the OP, it is worth pointing about WI.
of course, it's not just leah

a complication that cost her, her life!

I am aware of water intoxication I am just pointing out that Leah betts wouldn't have died from it had she of not taken ecstasy, as it clearly states on the page I linked to!
