NEW YORK - A teenager in New Jersey has broken the lock that ties Apple’s iPhone to AT&T’s wireless network, freeing the most hyped cell phone ever for use on the networks of other carriers, including overseas ones.
George Hotz, 17, confirmed Friday that he had unlocked an iPhone and was using it on T-Mobile’s network, the only major U.S. carrier apart from AT&T that is compatible with the iPhone’s cellular technology.
While the possibility of switching from AT&T to T-Mobile may not be a major development for U.S. consumers, it opens up the iPhone for use on the networks of overseas carriers.

Wow this is really something I don't care about
I mean why would anyone buy an Iphone for €500,- whilst superior phones are way cheaper (even free). This made me realise that the Iphone (with it's current specs) will not be a big hit amongst us spoiled EU consumers. The only phone that will get severe competition from it is the 8800. Just my opinion though.

i wouldn't buy it either if it is not subsidised and that i would have to pay for it. I would rather go for a N81/N82

would it be functional on our UK networks then
it is rather a low end phone even the P990i would kick it's butt still lol

It will work on any network now, but it is about a 2 hour process to get it unlocked. At least all the main functions work on it, now its been unlocked.

You are aware that you do end up paying for these cheaper (even free) phones in the cost of your calls and monthly contract? 'Free' doesn't actually mean free where mobile networks are concerned....

I'm well aware of this, that's why I don't think people will be eager to buy a € 500,- phone and on top of that pay a monthly subscription fee of around € 50,-. If you'd get a contract with a lot of minutes and messages and unlimited data for free with the phone that would change things. However given the current situation of the Iphone launch in the US (buy phone with a 2 year contract of roughly $ 70,-) and the current situation in Europe I don't think this will be the case.

Only a crazy person in Europe would buy an iPhone at full price,€500,sign a two year contract and still pay a minimum of €50 per month plus additional voice and data charges.A two year contract alone would mean watching others get their hands on the latest mobiles from other companies with such things as built in GPS other. Hmmm
