Right as some of you know im going to Uni in sept and I need a laptop.
Preferably I want a Dell laptop as i've had dell pc's all my life and never had problems.
I want 2gb Ram Minamum, 120gb Hard drive minamum.
Not sure about processers or anything the above 2 things are only things i know i want.
Anyway i can spend anything from £350-£700.

Could anyone recommend me the best one
Thanks
Max

I do not recommend the Dell laptops because they're both ugly AND bulky.
You could get a Mac which is quite nice (especially on student discount you get 100 pounds off!)

If you think the Dell 1330 is "ugly and bulky" then your either blind, or prejudiced towards the IMO grossly inferior macbook that retails for similar money.
The guy says he likes dell machines through his own previous experiances, i agree 100% with him!!

First of all relax. I did NOT say that the SPECIFIC model you showed was what ugly and bulky.
Second of all, People are entitled to OPINIONS. He asked the forum, someone answered and he could have just ignored my comment. I didn't slap someone close to you.
Finally I think I'll have to list what I currently own to show that I am NOT a fanboy (as you kindly assumed).
I own a Compaq P, Vaio TX, LG P Series, and a Macbook.
I also owned a Toshiba Satellite and Dell XPS Gaming laptop.
I found that the Dell was too troublesome. I've also been asked by a couple of friends to help sort out issues with their Dells.
I currently use a custom built PC and when I want to go portable, I use my Macbook which runs WINDOWS.
Now just to end this you said "Grossly inferior compared to price".
Ok. I bought mine for 680 after student discount.
My specs are.
Core2Duo 2.2Ghz
2GB ram
80Gb HDD
Reflective Screen
Wifi
Bluetooth
Built in Webcam
That Dell is
Core2Duo 1.5Ghz
1GB Ram
120GB HDD
Reflective Screen
Wifi
No Bluetooth
Built in Cam
So I fail to see the GROSS inferiority.

And sony laptops any good ?

I like to stay away from Sony in general as well because their pcs are full of bloatware and I like companies to make most of their major components (not like Apple does anyway). Toshiba is trust worthy.
Vaio's look nice and I'm not saying that they have any problems with them at all, its just that I prefer Toshiba due to their great customer service.

I own a VAIO and its Beautiful and does the job.. I've not touched my PC since I've owned the vaio

@max check out the Sony Vaio FZ series, its really good...
Also Dell XPS M1330 is good, but you will have to wait as the demand is more much more than the production... My friend has been waiting for his XPS since past 45 days and when he checks the status, it says the unit is in production... He's thinking to cancel the order because of the long wait... Also i have read at notebookreview forums that many members are still waiting for their XPS to arrive...
When i was going to buy a laptop i rounded my choices to Dell XPS M1330, Asus F3sv-A1, Sony Vaio FZ11L Acer Aspire 5920G(Gemstone design)...
And i finally bought the Acer Aspire 5920G few days ago as it satisfied my needs with the nVIDIA 8600M GT graphics card with 256MB dedicated memory and upto 1GB turbocache, T7100 Core 2 Duo 1.8Ghz processor, 160GB HDD, 2GB DDR2 RAM, Dolby Home Theater Certified virtual surround sound with Subwoofer, and lastly the Gemstone design, it looks so awesome!
you can read a review of it here(well, its not written by me):
http://www.theacerguy.com/2007/07/12/acer-aspire-5920-user-review/
Dont forget to read reviews on http://www.notebookreview.com before you buy yourself a laptop...
All the best mate!

Dell are the worst for bloatware. They are so bad that people have made programs specifically designed to remove the bloatware from Dells. I have setup several Dells for work lately and have spent ages getting rid of the rubbish that Dell put on them.

Its thru Dell Business
Also get 3% cash back on that

@mweb, I've pmed the member asking them about processor difference, you have to pay more to get an equal processor to the Macbook.
As for the screen, I've not seen the Dells screen so I cannot compare.
Anyhow, I've listed the spec differences so it's up to him to judge.
I've also said I recommend a Toshiba if he can get one.
Mweb, you've known me around the forums and I am not one to argue. But I don't like it when people assume I'm a fanboy. I was just trying to give a friendly opinion.
On a completely unreleated matter, you didn't even reply to me ages ago about what we pmed with each other.

Actually i sent you a PM on the matter last Saturday, requesting which number the SIM was (you stated a choice of two in a previous PM to me).
I had no reply to that request from you, which was why the matter was dropped.
And btw Bluetooth is an £11 option on the dell, and your specs quoted on the Macbook are superior to the base version, and only 5% of the population qualify for the layabout, sorry STUDENT discount, so thats irrelevant to 95% of buyers

Can anyone do that or only if your have a "business"

but it's relevant to him mweb.
Common now, you can't talk like that.
You can't just compare
Baselines.
(although even the baseline Macbook has a few more options than the dell)
You have to compare what you get for the final price related to the buyers situation.
I think the issue isn't that I'm a Macfanboy (which I completely am not), but perhaps you are a Mac hater?
(I never received a pm on a side note)

Well im not sure, ive been told anyone can do it. When i went thru the online order bit it didnt ask for anything that you couldnt give as an individual. Simply company name which i just put my self employment ref.
