Mobile phones 'eroding landlines'

BBC article

Mobile phone use is continuing to reduce the amount of time people spend using landlines, according to a report by the UK communications watchdog.

...

And 9% of UK households rely solely on mobile phones, compared with 7% that only have a landline, the report added.

I have to agree... although we have a landline we almost never use it any more and never give out the number to anyone but our close family. Everyone else calls us on our mobile phones these days

Same here, hardly use the landline anymore.

Most calls are made from mobiles with xnet minutes.

landline what that lol i never use the landline nomore apart form the regular call form the telemarkets

Posted by batesie
yep, mobile phone and VoIP phone. havent used the landline since 2006

Posted by jcwhite_uk
My landline only gets used for broadband. This might change if T-Mobile are going to start 7.2mbs hsdpa. That would mean I would get data 3mbs quicker via T-Mobile than I can get through my phone line.

Posted by goldenface
Same here, I only use mine for BB.

I must have made about £25 worth of calls in the last three months and BT want £160+ plus off me so no wonder no-one uses them to make calls. I called them once and was put on hold for 55 mins, they're useless anyway.

T-Mobile and do those all in one data-cards so a move over to T-Mo only is on the cards soon.

funnily enough i might be ditching a landline and broadband all together and getting a tmobile webnwalk modem instead! again only 1.8mbps at the moment but....

Posted by masseur
just remember the 1gb "acceptable usage" policy on tmobile.

I use that much on my phones already and last time I checked our houshold broadband consumed something in the order of 20-25gb/month!

Posted by batesie
good point (even tho its says "unlimited" - subject to fair usage policy) thats the only other thing to consider.....

@masseur how do you check how much usage your household is using?

Posted by masseur
your broadband provider should be able to tell you

Ah thank you

As you need to have web and walk plus to use the internet on your computer with T-Mobile you actually get a 3GB fair usage which is about what I use at home.

I have the "plus" (which costs an extra £2.50 if I remember correctly) but understood that simply meant the standard rule of using it on a computer was relaxed... I didn't realise there was also an increased limit, unless perhaps that changed since I joined.

anyway, that certainly makes it an even better deal than I thought!

Heres the diffrence:
Web and walk: extra £7.50 over normal tariff. Only for data on phone and is limited to 1GB
Web and Walk Plus: Extra £12.50 over normal tariff. Can be used for data on phone or through phone to computer but cant use VOIP and is limited to 3GB.
Web and Walk Max: Extra £22.50 over normal tariff. Can be used on phone and computer and VOIP and is limited to 10GB.

@masseur

Have you ever exceeded your acceptable usage policy? I'm now sure I know of anyone who has been restricted by it.

I've never received any kind of warning, so I guess not

T-Mobiles for W&W max are quite vague:
To ensure a high quality of service for all our customers, a fair use policy of 10GB (of data sent and received in the UK) a month applies.

If you exceed 10GB per month, we may tell you to reduce your future use. If you again exceed 10GB per month, we may tell you that we are going to apply network protection controls, resulting in a reduced network speed for 14 days.

If you exceed 10GB per month for a third time, we may tell you that we are going to apply further network protection controls, resulting in a reduced network speed until you upgrade your price plan to include a larger data allowance.

I mean, upgrade your plan to where?

Has anyone ever fallen foul. I know I exceeded the basic plan by a huge margin and nothing happened.

Successfully ditched the landline in November last year.
I use a Vodem form Vodafone NZ for internet connection to my laptop. 1 GB per month is enough for me atm. A second GB costs very little extra.

A well chosen mobile plan is very cost competitive these days. Landlines really are obselete for voice calls.

it does make more sense.... specially here in the Philippines where fixed line infrastructure was horrible... even in the city, the carriers were so backlogged that it took at least 2 years to get your application processed! We applied for our 2nd fixed line and got it literally 8 years later (not kidding)

Meanwhile, you can get a prepaid mobile kit in 10 min that's got coverage even in most rural and undeveloped areas... and in some cases, even out at sea between regions in the Philippines (we're an archipelago)

@jplacson

I agree with you! even the average postpaid plans with cellphones,
it's still cheaper than landlines and only takes at least 24 hours to activate.

plus, you get more services than landlines! we ditched our landline years ago, and just last month we wanted to apply again for landline for BB, but we found out later that even broadband isn't available in our area, only voice calls! how primitive can that be? rotary phones anyone? lol

Landlines are geting less and less significant day by day. But I stil think that those huge business people still need them.

Posted by faseeh_sm
I have not not used landlines to make a call for a long time

Posted by Twometre
I dont even answer it when it rings.

Posted by Lunion
All i have a landline for is the internet. I never use it for calling

Posted by bluechips
i ditched landline and get data line for almost 2 years now. i use voip for calling outside my payg mobile network subscription.

Interesting. And we thought the preference for mobile over landline was an African phenomenom! The last time I used my landline was late 2005, I believe. All my calls - personal or business - since then have been on mobile.

Same goes for my wife and other I know. Dad still uses a CDMA fixed wireless phone, but only for internet access too.

Mostly, only corporate organisations still use landlines here, and there are very few of those around.

Landlines are free.

Yes, here the people are giving up landlines. They use mobile phones a lot.

Hi all,

Actually the T-Mobile USB Modem is £29 per month and the USB Modem is free but it does require an 18 month contract it also appears this only has a 3GB per month allowance not sure if there is a higher package for this or not.

But since moving back to my parents due to my ill health they have Talk Talk as there phone provider and i have a Broadband only package from BT that costs me £15 approx per month but has a 5GB per month limit and last time i ran a speed test was getting just under 4megs speed.

A 3GB per month may be OK for some but currently i am downloading loads of content for my soon to arrive iPod but even if i exceed my 5GB limit BT will warn to cap my usage before taking any action. Also Broadband speeds are going to increase so I'm not sure how long the mobile Networks will have a speed advantage for plus unless you are with a cable provider the more people using the system at any one time the slower the service will become and i believe this will effect the Mobile Networks as well.

Really for the best broadband experience and constant speed cable is the best. The only time i use a land line phone is when i have to dial those really annoying 0870/0845 numbers as are the only numbers i can't call cheaply from either my Mobile or Skype, actually i should check as Skype they may actually be cheaper but i really hate those 0870 or 0845 so called local call rate numbers and think companies help lines should be banned from using them as they are a real rip off IMO.

Marc
