w810i headphones - mono sound

when i use my headphones that ccame with my w810i, i get sound only in one ear if the connector is pushed in all the way. if i pull it out a little bit, i get stereo. i'm assuming this isn't normal, since nothing came up in my search.

i have a pearl also and i had to pick up a pair of headphones with 3 ring connectors on the plug for right/left/mic and i'm assuming this is the same issue with my w810 headphones since it has an in-line mic, but only 2 ring connectors.

anyone else have this problem? it's really annoying and i don't want to slip in/out and lose the stereo connection. i can't imagins SE would do this on purpose.
