HBH-DS200 - Photo Shoot / pre-review

Posted by obakesan
Just got my HBH-DS200! today.

Will do a quick review later when the unit is charged. Some points of note so far though, it would seem that DS200 is identical to DS220 given that both models are identifed on the manual (different headphones / colours).

The manual also mentions that in order to "change tracks" or "change volume" you need to use the handset controls. So there is no way to change these with the unit itself. Only answer call and play/stop as previously suspected. It's also a bit strange that while the headset itself is not "Walkman" branded, the packaging is!?

Got this from Hong Kong, so it's interesting that it's the European version rather than asian as expected. Now photos for your viewing pleasure!

UPDATE:

Battery is fully charged, manual says to do a full 8 hour charge, but want to try them. First impression (well second, 1st was at SE store) is I am quite pleased. Am listening to music now from my W850. The unit is quite light to wear and the clip is quite strong with a spring in it. I'm no audiophile but music quality sounds ok to me, at any rate seems no worse then using the wired headset. (am using the headphones from my HPM-82). The stop/play button does what it does and playback fades in/out during calls and continues where left off.

Call quality seemed ok too for this type of device, incoming sound was clear and understanable, outgoing sound was clear as well.

UPDATE**

Went out and used them on the bus and train. Work pretty great and could not tell the difference between my HPM-82s after a while. Only downside was sometimes the sound would cut then resume but I think this is related to interference in the area. need to use more to see.

UPDATE***
using this for approx a week now. work quite well. one nice feature just noticed today is that when the battery is low it will "bleep" and a message on the phone screen will show up "handsfree battery low". nice touch. (do the other units do the same thing?)

Cheers

i doubt it you dont normally get all those manuals with fakes, just the one badly worded one....

i'm sure its fine, where did you buy it from?

Posted by tranced
maybe im wrong. i've been searching for this product on internet and saw it comes with a box, though it aint a product.

Posted by obakesan
I am pretty sure it is genuine. The quality of the material looks more polished than those normaly associated with fakes. re the HBH-DS790 thread. I bought it from a reputable website (not ebay) who I have used for years now and have had no problems. cost me £50 GBP inc shipping, etc.

http://global.yesasia.com/en/[....]on-electronics/pid-1004906298/

recommend for anyone in UK looking for asian products...

These are on eBay for much cheaper, are they fakes? Thy're very nice.

what exactly is the difference between this, the ds200, and the ds220? besides the bundled earphones and colour

Posted by obakesan
I am sure you get a cheaper price, but to be honest, I rather pay that bit more knowing I will get the real thing rather than gamble on ebay getting a fake one. recall the memory stick and HBH-DS790 discussions!?

Price wise, I think it is reasonable considering the delivery was free and I paid no duty or VAT on the item. The same item is about the same price on expansys and with shipping came to £58 or so. so I saved £8 already.

If you know for sure that the ebay one is genuine and the seller is reputable and the price is good then go for it. just be weary.

later... off to give the bt unit a good field test.

Definitely not a fake. I have the same one, with the walkman in the box aswell.
Volume is quite low with the P1i and w950i. Bugger not to have any kind of controls on the headset. Will post pictures later

Did you get it from the same supplier?

I have this... exactly same boxing and branding... got it from Expansys last week... Using it with the N95 at the moment... it is very nice......
All genuine leaflets etc... with EU charger...

This is the 200. The 220 as far can tell just has different colouring, 1 tone, as opposed to 2 tone and different packaged headphones. There might be something in the firmware maybe for better sound or something but only time will tell....

Found the volume with my W850 to be quite loud. Used it on the tube and was good enough. about 3 or 4 bars volume. max is quite loud.

Think one of the other differences between the ds200, and the ds220 is the ds220 uses in ear buds...

Posted by kuramyi
Hey obakesan,

can you see something about the connectivity of the device, as I heard about problems with other SE stereo bluetooth headsets. For example when you got your mobile in your pocket and you're walking around, the music replay would interrupt quiet a lot.

How about the ds200?

@obakesan

lets get down to business... hows the performance?! have you had DS970 before? can you compare any difference?! loudness etc etc... static interference blah blah blah?!

much thanx

Posted by obakesan
Hi Guys,

@kuramyi.

Sound seemed fine to me. I went out the other day witht he clip on my suit lapel and my phone in the inside pocket of the suit. Used it for approx 2 hours during my journey on the bus to and thro. Sound was crystal clear and had no interruptions.

@rockygali

This is my 1st bluetooth headset, lol, never really needed one before, but like the idea for the music. As such I can't compare with other devices, but for a 1st purchase I am quite pleased. In the short time I've used it the sound was clear and there was no interference aside from a few times while I was waiting for a train.

Most of my music is mp3 @ 192kbps and for good encodings the sound is quite loud on my w850. If i put the max to full volume it would definately hurt my ears! so no complaints there.

I have noticed some odd things but that might be the phone. for example when I open the slide the sound pauses for a second sometimes. also sometimes the sound would pause then continue which at present I am putting down to interference.

The unit is quite light and the mic seems to pick up fine according to the mrs when i called her. also they paired automatically easily without any need to enter the 0000 code. now I just turn bt on the phone, tuen the unit on and its connected.

I had thought about getting the 970s and even the 980 but figure the 200/220 is a good compromise between function and form. It would of been nice to have the volume/track controls on the unit, I think SE could of squeezed them in there if they were pushed too which is a shame.

cheers.

nope, got it from a shop here in Dubai, UAE.

Its my first stereo bluetooth headset aswell so i can't compare it with others. However, i feel that it lacks volume. Also, there is no way of controlling your songs with it since it doesnt have other keys besides the pickup and play/pause button. it has a small screen which only shows the battery level and if it is pairing. The positive thing about it is that you can use any of your headphones that you are used to.

Posted by rockygali
@Skrue

you said the volume is quite low?! have you had an HPM70 before?! the loudness on that headset is quite high, on 3 bars.

is DS200/220 already loud on 3bars? or on 4? or wot?!

silly me, all i wanted to know is how loud, coz if its louder than DS970 then id go for it.

coz i haf a feeling that DS980 will go be pricey when it comes out here in the Phil.

we have it in the shop and it doesn't have a walkman logo so this are just fine

Hi. Has anyone had problems with a HBH-DS200 disconnecting / turning itself off after playing just one song? I use it with a Motorola V3xx. Calls work like a charm (answering, voice dial, etc.) When I use it for music, I have two gripes:

  1. It initially binds with the phone using a headset profile, not A2DP. So I have to go into a menu and choose "use stereo bluetooth", then after a small pause, it switches profiles and nice, stereo sound starts. However, this may be the V3xx's fault, not the HBH-DS200.

  2. The annoying one, and hopefully where someone here can help... when used in A2DP mode, after the first song finishes, the headset turns itself off and the phone switches back to playing music through the speakerphone. I'm able to listen to a whole playlist when using the low quality, mono headset profile. But no luck with A2DP

Any ideas?

STOP using the Motorola V3xx; and get yourself a SE! A phone that follows standard BT Protocols with the proper stack implemented.

I had a problem with my HBH-DS200 and my W950i, It seemed like it was all connected as it should be, but when playing music and making calls it was always....jumpy..and would skip, like a scratched CD.

Works fine on my P1i tho, no problems.

I like the fact that you can change the headphones, rather than previous sony hands-free devices!

Posted by rockygali
change the headphones?! like 3.5mm jacks?!

That's very strange, because I have been using the HBH-DS200 with my W950i for at least 10 hours now (at home, on the bus, ...) without a single skip!

It works great with any headphone with 3.5mm jack. I use it together with some hq in-ear-phones (Sony, Ultimate Ears, Future Sonics), didn't even bother to try the included buds.

If anyone want's a recommendation for a high-end ultramobile rig, the HBH-DS200 and the Future Sonics Atrio M5 is one *awesome* sounding pair!

@james

what is the volume on your phone.. (how many bars are there to achieve pump up volume that is not hurting the ears)

depends on the sensitivity of the headphone. with the UE super.fi 5 pro (the most sensitive I own) I listen at 8-10 of 16 bars, with most other headphones at 13-15. that is commuting, with lots of ambient noise.

did u update your firmware on your w950?

Hi all,
I have mine for almost a week.
The conclusions:
1. with radio and mp3 it has very good quality. I'd prefered to be a bit more louder.
2. I have problems with mp4 and 3gp. When a movie is playing I hear some scratches and the sounds has a lot of stops. When I use p990i's earphones or my small speakers all is OK (no scrathces and stops). When I use again the HBH-DS200 the problem is back.
3. Because I use them a lot of hours everh day, I must recharge them every one or two days.

Does anyone have the same problem with 3gp and mp4 movies; Can someone test this, please;

Posted by gareb
Can you use this with the radio in a 850?

Posted by obakesan
I dont's see how as you would still need the normal wired handsfree unit to provide he antenna. In theory, you might be able to plug the wired handsfree in and connect with BT. Tried, but could not get this to work.

Yes, this is what I'm doing with my p990. I use the wired handsfree as antenna. It is working also with a sound adpter (see photo):

Then you must go to options and choose to transfer sound to BT.

I hope I helped you

ok i don't know if anyone noticed

you can control the volume with the play/pause button
just hold it down and it will adjust the volume

@kapetannik

Thanks for the tip. Doesn't seem to work on my W850. Can't find the option to transfer to BT. Nothing in the radio settings or bluetooth? Is the option somewhere else? cheers

@Qwest905

Great find! Does indeed do the trick (on W850), nearly blew my ear drums out! lol. A shame there is now down volume option...

Cheers,

Posted by Qwest905
if u hold it down longer the volume will go lower =)

you just let go when you like the desired "loudness"

Posted by kapetannik
@obakesan

1. Connect your BT
2. Plug the antenna (wired headphones or adpater)
3. Open "Mediaplayer" then open "Radio"
4. Press 'more' then 'setup' (or 'options') then 'transfer sound'
5. Select "HBH-DS200" or other Bluethooth device.

You may have a bit different options in your phone. I have p990 with Vodafone menu, and gr language.

* Can someone please test this:

Thanks, but no luck, there is simply no transfer sound to BT option on the radio. Am using W850 with latest firmware.

I have a question as I'm insterested in this headset. If I connect my own earphones and im listening to an mp3 with this thing paired to my n95 and the connection drops for whatever reason, does it mean the sound will be redirected to the n95's speakers?

Posted by Danny_BFC
@ Tregba if you mean the bluetooth headsets connection drops and the headset is not connected to the headset then the sound should return to the speakers.

Are you having problems with this?

Posted by tregba
Erm, i'm not entirely sure i understood what you meant! Basically, I want to use my own headphones with the HBH-200. Connect it via bluetooth to my N95. Play an mp3 with the volume full blast on the N95. The sound obviously would be transmitted to the earphones only, right.

However, if for whatever reason the connection drops e.g., I move out of range from the N95 or my body intereferes with the connection. When the connection drops will the mp3 I have on then immediately start playing through the N95's inbuilt speakers or does the track pause?

Posted by obakesan
Hi. On SE phone, it will prompt you if you want to continue playback through speakers. Not sure on a Nokia what will happen, might still prompt you or maybe just automatically play on headphones or just stop.

cheers,

Posted by The ROC
I'm think about getting one but can someone tell me what the continous music playback time is?

Hi I got mine yesterday, can anyone confirm the battery life for this accessory?

Posted by rockygali
and also i wanted to know how it performs in crowded places like trains, jam packed elevators...

you know, when your that close to other persons.. i mean like that crowded.
coz i bought a BT stereo headset from another brand. it skips when im in a very crowded area. i dunno why. can this be considered as an interference?!

i wonder is this gadget can perform better... or has anyone notice this on DS970?

Posted by noupot
I did buy one and it works just fine with my P1
