well, i sorta decided not to buy a laptop, after i made that thread about laptop shopping (i cant find it any where) but when in shop, i couldnt resist. i actually bought one. Purchased yesterday. My sister and i went laptop shopping, she needs for school as she is a teacher, we were going to finance both of them, but i decided to buy out right, saves me $130aud in the long run. My sis didnt buy, but later last night bought one off ebay, an Asus one. Bad thing is though, i come home, see laptop advertisements everywhere and ebay listings with better laptop for cheaper, ah well, life goes on.

Any way, here are some piccies:

any one guess what brand laptop it is?

here are the specs:

decent pc?

any one owned a Toshiba? what did you think of it if so?
so far so good for me.

Very nice

Someone told me that Toshiba laptops have extremely
poor battery life though

Posted by paul101
i didnt have a problem

i think its cos they go more for pc like parts that use up alot of power

@5 - I like Toshiba notebooks too, specially those ofthe satellite-series ! I like anything that comes from - Japan !

whats your average battery life on a normal Toshiba Laptop then 2hrs?

my mates dell lasts about 3hrs at the most!
my F400 lasts about 30mins hahaha

Posted by dude_se
ive been on my toshiba laptop right now sat in bed for about 1hr 30 mins and its at 43% (from a full charge), and ive had msn on, firefox, music, watched a bit of a film, etc. i find the battery life is very acceptable.
i love mine apart from the crappy 60gb hdd and the scratches ive got over it

@5 - What's this SONY product below . . . encircled in RED Is that a mobile-phone?

excellent choice in a Toshiba!

You'll find amazing customer service and that they are extremely reliable.

Posted by Miss UK
So roughley your talking 2-5hrs then
25% remain ing on this Dell does live upto 3hrs though!

Posted by >500
@jojo
its a Sony NW-A808 mp3 player

well its been fine so far, just battery a bit average, i charged it about 5 hrs when i got it, then used it, 1hr later, almost dead, so i charged overnight, again, about 1-1.5hrs was almost dead. Hopefully the battery life gets better down the track. Its a 6 cell battery so should be good for a few hours. If it doesnt get better ill give Toshiba a buzz.

Any one know if the Sony battery cell problem has been resolved yet? i know there was a big battery thing going on with Dell, Toshiba and Fujitsu and they had to recall a large number of cells.

OH and, Vista seems to be working great, for now

@5 - OK, thanks . . thought twas a new fone mate !

Hi>500

Congratulations on your new Laptop i think you made a wise choice going with Toshiba. My first Laptop and many after that were all Tosh's until Sony came on the scene and then i switched. After quite a few Sony's including my one and only desktop Christmas a year ago i bought a Sony Laptop that within a year had seriously slowed down and the letters on the keys had started to disappear all within 14 months on a Laptop that had never left my flat.

Needless to say i have now returned to Toshiba and what a wise choice i think i have made the build quality IMO is better than Sony, who i personally think charge a premium for there branding whilst there quality is now questionable at best.

The link you gave doesn't show any spec's mine is a Satellite P100-160 and the spec is

Core2 Duo T5200
1024 Ram @533mhz
100GB hard drive @5,400rpm
17" WXGA+ Trubrite TFT Screen
DVD-Super-Multi Drive(2 Layer)
W-Lan 802.11A/G
Vista Home Premium 32bit

I have found Vista to be really memory intensive and notice you also have a performance Widget setup, mine was showing 75-80% memory in use even when doing very little. I have mentioned this in another thread but you can get a USB memory key and use it to boost your memory. Whilst this is obviously not as good as adding real RAM it does work and makes quite a difference.

If you decide to do this you need to make sure the Memory Key is actually Boost ready as not all keys are, but i added 2GB for under £30 and the results are a much quicker system especially opening Web pages and the widget now shows only 50% in use most of the time a worth while upgrade IMO and relatively cheap to do. I also must add the Toshiba Trubrite screen really is stunning especially as i am using it as my TV whilst stuck in bed and much better than even the Sony X-Black screen that before seeing this i thought was very good. Also i find the sound from the built in Harmon Kardon speakers very good as well. Although i have set of JBL Invader 4.1 sitting in the garage which i must hook up to improve the sound further.

hmmm, must have put wrong link, here it is:

http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin[....]a87f9c06e3/Product/View/XC3999

battery seems poor so far on mine.

@>500

Looks like a nice Laptop, one other thing i forgot to say if you are using it mainly at home it is better to run it off the mains and remove the battery as Laptop batteries have a limited life span of charges.

I can't really comment on battery life as i only use it on mains power but you do seem to have a problem in general with battery life are you sure you not in some weird kind of electromagnetic field or something?

no i dont think there is any electro magnetic field. my bros acer seems to last a good 2.5hrs. Mine is only lasting bout 1 to 1.5hrs. 6 cell should be running more. I was told i would get 2hrs minimum. Should i call toshiba or take it back to the store?

Posted by MWEB
Very nice that Toshiba, good choice, that batt life seems about right for that model IMO, I get 8 hours on my Dell no problem, with it's small screen and monster 9 cell extended battery .

Posted by >500
any one know if its possible to updgrade toshiba batteries. im looking to upgrade my battery to a 9 cell? its currently a 6 as standard.

Posted by Miss UK
Blimmey my mate was right then they don't last long
how long does the manual say it's ment to last for?

you should bought a dell-boy

Posted by >500
yeah i saw an advertisement when i got home with the new Dell coloured laptops. ah well.

manual doesnt even tell me how long it should last for, the manual is useless it barely tells you anything about the features on the comp or how to use them

Posted by Miss UK
I don't know what to say would you want to take it back ?
I mean my mates got a Dell Inspiron 1500 I think it is and it lasts for 3 hours on the battery

Seems the Toshiba manual is useless maybe they want you to look on there website haha!

Toshiba make good televisions though
not slagging them off but there batterys on there laptops are useless

Posted by Cycovision
Toshiba used to state their battery life assuming that you turn the screen brightness right down and use full power saving functions all of the time Don't know if they still do Also, Vista generally drains your battery more than XP because it takes up more memory space and processor usage even when it's just sitting there doing nothing, although of course all laptops and batteries are different

I've not heard of nine-cell batts for toshies yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if they're out there somewhere

surely if i go back there, and ask for an exchange and get another laptop. A refund wont happen im assuming. They wil prob offer to send it back for repair/new battery though instead or exchanging.

i hope there is a return policy, like a 1 week return thing or something. i only got it sunday

Posted by Miss UK
you should be able to return it after 14days if your satisfied with it
you could say your relative bought you one without u knowing

Posted by jcwhite_uk
If it was bought from a shop then they have no obligation to take it back if it is working as it was designed. Most places will accept returns but only if the item is unused and the box unopened.

Posted by >500
@jc
the box has been opened of course and ive used the acessories, well the charger any way. battery is only lasting me bout 1-1.5hrs. The worker told me 2hrs minimum it would last.

surely they would give an exchange as its only a few days old. id get another laptop or put $$$ towards another one.

which laptops have good battery life? asus, acer, hp, compaq? any recommendations?

Posted by jcwhite_uk
We use HP at work and the batteries are pretty good.

@>500

If you want your battery to last longer the first thing you need to do is turn the windows sidebar and widgets off. Also are you running this laptop on WiFi as that whilst on battery power as that will also use lots of power, same goes if you leave Bluetooth running. What the salesman or even Toshiba quote is average battery life and doesn't take into account using any of these power hungry extras. You may consider this usual use but i am pretty sure the manufacturer in quoting times doesn't. even if you find a laptop that quotes longer times if you start using all of the above i doubt you will find they live up to your expectations.

@ 500,
take it back then decide which one to buy!

Dell are pretty good for the money

Posted by jcwhite_uk
I have dealt with Dell's at work and found that they are not that reliable. They also load a hell of a lot of their own software onto their machines that just slows thing down. Their support is quite poor too.
