Last week while @ Lulworth cove on the south coast of the UK my O2 K800 lost signal with O2 and logged on to F Bouygues!!!??? How could this have happened? As far as I can tell F Bouygues is a french network and the point I was at is 62.70 miles from the nearest French coast line!

Weird or what, good job I didnt have to make any international calls to the UK from the UK

Good job your a PAYG Customer too or are you
weird that though...

Posted by goldenface
That is indeed strange.

However, I do know that when some landline calls are made, they can be routed internationally if the home network is busy or obstructed for some reason.

Doesn't really say much for O2's coverage if signals from France are stronger.

South Coast?

Dorset to be precise!

about 10 miles from where I live...

mobile reception is dead crap there...

I often loose UK and get French signal if im out in the channel...

@reg

So do you go fishing or just sailing in the Channel?

Posted by fatreg

well kinda..

did have access to a hobie cat until a few years ago..

not been sailing in ages though!

How would they go about charging you for calls?

Posted by goldenface
@Pmerryman

I think there would have to be a roaming agreement first between the networks. Is that not how it works?

Posted by fatreg
Oh! They charge alright!

Its like 40p a text and like £1.20 a min for a call!

I have been to lulworth many times and found that I have a french network instead of uk. I have even had messages from the french networks saying welcome to france.

Posted by fatreg
Must be a pain in the arse if you live in lulworth!!

Posted by SE4NICK
That truely is unusual.....

Posted by masseur
what happens if you try to manually select your network?

is it simply not available or just a much weaker signal than the french one?

Posted by SE4NICK

There is no uk network when you go down base of the cliff, only french networks.
I have also phoned using a uk network while sat in calias docks before.

I go down there once a year and never noticed it.

I'll be along with my family the next sunny weekend we get and so will check it out again. I'm on t-mobile now and was previously on vodafone

we really like the cliff top picnics and the walk up that big hill the other side of the cove

noticed the same thing down at St. Margaret’s Bay near Dover.
(a really nice place worth a visit if your in Kent -http://www.baytrust.org.uk/ )
when down on the beach the only networks are french - and all the radio stations are french too!

maybe the white chalk cliffes help the signal, and well its in line of sight of the french transievers!

I go to lulworth 4-5 times a year as it is only a few miles from me. It is a lovely place to visit. Durdle door is well worth the walk as well from lulworth.

Has nobody asked their service provider about why this is? If I was in the uk, and getting charged large amounts for making call, I would not be best pleased.

Posted by masseur
I guess they would just refere you to their coverage maps (as no one has 100% coverage)

heres the O2 one showing alot of missing coverage in that area

Posted by Paul_C
I never thought the network would transmit so far

I was at the top of the hill

When I got logged onto there network, no welcome txt tho

Posted by pmerryman
Where is the photo of, it looks very nice indeed.

Maybe it best not to use your phone when going there then
Switch it off otherwise you will be charged a large portion for calls and texts either way...

Bit naff if you live there though

I live on the end of Kingswinford and a big field gap btw there and Kiddeminster and boy I swear calling people on 0range
is crap at all times

Durdle door

Man O' War cove... (next door to Durdle door)

Jurassic coastline, facing Durdle door....

I would say all come down, but I hate tourists!

and yes.. all 3 pics were taken by me..

this is on a separate post as it won't let me edit my post?

Posted by pmerryman
You cant say that you hate tourists, putting all that money into the local community.

You also go on holiday, which then makes you a tourist yourself.

I don't need to go no holiday! everything is right on my doorstep! hehe..

I understand that they bring money with them, but they also bring lots of problems and all restaurants, bars, things to do get inflated by about 20% over the summer.......

I'm a local! I want local prices!

Posted by pmerryman
Inflated prices happens everywhere though. Try going on holiday in the school holidays, then you will know what inflated prices are.

You have got it all on your doorstep though, that place looks very nice. Only ever been to Bournemouth on a lads weekend, down the south coast, think I may have to have a re think about next years holiday.

I usually set my phone network to auto when I roam and while I was in France, F Bouygues turned out a few times while I had to make some calls. The line was just as good as Orange and other networks, but it had the cheapest rate of them all, half or almost half if I remember correctly. Had I known this from the very beginning I would've set my network to accept F Bouygues exclusively!

Posted by arien617
My phone seemed to pick up Vodafone UK signal in the Calais ferry port. I could make normal priced calls and everything!

Posted by fatreg
ahhh a lads weekend in Bmuff?

I do that every weekend! hehe...

it's a beautiful place, that I can't deny...
