Anyone upgraded Windows XP to Vista

Been trying to get my windows media center 2005 pc that I purchased in Jan 2006 to upgrade to windows vista.

Well ok I have installed it with no problems but when trying to get the normal things working even with the new drivers the thing just wont run proper and there is always something that don’t seem to want to work right under it.

Should I just give up on upgrading to vista all together, wait a while or is there a real need to purchase a new system?

Thanks all

Give up for now and wait a while

There are still quite a lot of driver issues with Vista, especially if you're upgrading a machine built for xp media center. The problem is, a lot of computer manufacturers used obscure hardware in their media center PCs and the hardware manufacturers haven't got round to releasing fully working Vista drivers for these weird and wonderful cards yet.

Having said that, my bog-standard Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS sound card still won't work properly with Vista Ultimate so it's not just the customised stuff either!

well i installed from windows media center i bought in nov 2006 virtually pain-free..ly

only thing that hasnt wrked since is a little button on the keyboard for muting the sound, it works just doesnt light up, yet all other buttons seem to work. But i asked compaq and apparently it blew during the upgrade, somehow

As I said, it depends on the PC manufacturer. For example, Medion once used some kind of god-awful combined graphics and TV/video capture card which was made by ATI. All well and good, except ATI don't have even the XP driver for it on their site, never mind the Vista driver.

Medion don't have the XP or Vista driver either on their site. They tell you to 'use your restore disk'

Or at least they didn't have the drivers. I must admit, I haven't hunted for these drivers for several months now so the situation may have changed, but I do know that ATI still do not support this card.

well i have a philips freevents mt2400

i have just run the upgrade advisor cpu system memory dvd drive and video card no action required.

realtek high def audio device will need an updated driver, which i know they have.

realtek rtl8169/8110 family gigabit ethernet nic, 802.11g pci wireless network adapter, wan miniport, hauppague wintv 88x crossbar and hauppague wintv 88x dvb-t hybrid tuner there is no compatibility data for this device.

then says hauppague wintv 88x video, hauppauge wintv 88x ts capture and hauppague wintv 88x audio capture no issues found

as for programs

adobe audition 2.0, powerdvd and ati desktop component may have minor compatibility issues

Now the problem i was having was getting most of the programs just wouldnt work like they should thats why i restored my pc back to xp.

so what your saying is give it a little longer?

Posted by Cycovision
Oh right! In what way are they not working? Are you using the 64 bit version of Vista?

Posted by xboxman
no using the (is it) 32bit version vista premium

Posted by xboxman
the programs just wouldnt run correctly like at one point i couldnt use the internet no matter what i tried it would say that it couldnt find the sites i was looking for not even google would work. adobe audition os the one that i really need to work but that wouldnt work at all not sure if adobe even still support it even though they are still selling it doesnt metion anything about vista and a patch for it.

another thing flash player programs like the aol broadband disk wouldnt work at all

perhaps i should give it another go but need to make sure audition before anything else will work ok

Edit:

Yes, it sounds like you need to stick with XP

You sound like you know what you are doing so if you can't find solutions to these problems yourself then it's unlikely that myself or anybody else can to be honest. There are tons of software compatibility issues with Vista, it is just a waiting game for updates and patches I'm afraid.

like i said above it could more just be niggles than anything else but when i was doing it the last time it seemed to wind me up to no end but if i do it again do you think i should just keep it on there and try and work out all the niggles/problems over a preiod of time?

HeHeHe

Just edited my post

Pesonally, I'd stick with XP for now and not have to put up with the niggles at all.

I would also suggest sticking to XP for now. At work (in IT) I have seen several people upgrade to vista only to find that hardware isnt supported and software wont run. This has meant rolling back the system to XP.

Tried vista...not good at all..reverted to XP...No antivirus software..most programs dont run.. crap..

i've been running vista ultimate on my p4 2.6 ghz (which i bought in late 2004) since february and i haven't faced any great problems so far. There were the odd crashes from time to time during the first two months but after the first bunch of updates it was all fine.i've never had any performance issues either runs pretty smooth.I had to upgrade a few hardware components though when i bought vista.I upgraded my ram to 1gb and got a dx10 compatiable nvidia 6200.I think if you have a config equal to or better than this then vista is very much worth the upgrade!

Vista works fine on my iMac....

as it has done since i installed it..

saying that I never use it so can't comment on it's stability...

I downgraded from XP to vista ultimate!

And it works fine except...........................

.....................Don't even get me started!!

HeHeHe!

I'm not normally this defeatist, I'd be searching for workarounds and what have you but I've read so many posts on other forums complaining about common software packages not working etc. that I really do think it's a waiting game for the software producers (or hackers!) to catch up. I'm still using XP on both my work and home PCs for exactly this reason, although I have Vista installed as dual-boot on the work PC.

Older software that is no longer supported I can understand, but AOL??? They should have had their installer sorted out months before Vista was released!

Generally speaking, I always insist that a clean install is usually much more trouble free than an in-place upgrade. No redundant registry entries to potentially confuse matters. Back all of your stuff up and wipe the bugger!

"he's a field mouse you see, he's a county mouse, he's naive about the city life"

you got issues with your mouse nanu?

I upgraded as oppose to a clean install and it doubled up all my music files etc with the public folder thingy!

I am in the process of backing up my files to an external hard drive and doing a clean install!

The biggest problem I have had is with my Microsoft Intellipoint Mice as there is a compatibility issue with them, but they would work fine and then just stop!

At one point a window opened alerting me to the fault and it said to fix this issue please click here and I just presumed it was Vista's idea of taking the piss out of me and that it had taken over my webcam and was filming me trying to get the mouse to move the cursor 4 inches across my screen to hit the button to fix my mouse so that I could move it the 4 inches to fix the mouse so that I could move it the 4 inches..........!

Needless to say the air was blue my pc received a punch or two and I can now navigate windows using my keyboard only

grrrrrrr

this is making me even more mad knowing that vista will run ok but the software will not work. looked on adobes website and they aint even supporting audition 2.0 that they brought out last year and for a bloody program that costs over £300 and all you get is well it may work ok is a little poor dont you think. im so itching to try vista again but seems my system is working fine i dont want to mess it up like last time i put it on.
