What about the screen...? Is it really that bad and not up to date with other high-end phones?
How do you make a phonecall...??? Do you slide out the keyboard, enter the number and then slide it back inside again...? (Hey I'm a P900 owner so it's ok for me to ask...
When you make sms or otherwise make text input - is there then some kind of the phone suggesting words? (like the P1i)
Posted by masseur
I've never found the TyTN screen to be bad, at least no worse than most others.
no need to slide the keyboard out to make a call. Just press the green phone button and a dialling pad appears on screen and you can use the stylus or your fingers to do the dialling. As you dial, each contact that contains the (combination of) letters represented by the digits you press are shown for quick access or you can just simply dial the number directly
Windows Mobile does have predictive text
Posted by Foxhunter
Ok I see
Doh! I just looked at the size and weight - it's allmost the same size as my P900...
So it must be the P1i then - but again that one doesn't have inbuilt GPS... I just cannot decide...

another detailed review, this time at pocketnow.com

9 hours 23min of batterylife!!! Is this really true??? Any chance of a larger battery ?

masseur i´m planning to buy this phone in a few weeks but i need some information regarding:
- Sound Quality (Is it as good as SE?)
- A2DP: Sound Quality and battery drain (Since there is only a mini usb port i will need to use this feature to have my own earphones working)
- GPS: Will it Work with others programs? (not just only tomtom). Im asking this because N95 GPS only work with nokia maps.
- Screen: Is it visible at direct sunlight?
- Battery: It can always be used for all day long without need charging?
- Messaging: Can you write messages (with your fingers) using touch screen with just one hand easily? It got delivery reports and fast contacts ( a list with last contacts used like on SE phones)
Thank you

- Sound Quality (Is it as good as SE?)
sound can be a little tinny at times. There is just a single speaker at the back on this model. Its plenty loud enough though
- A2DP: Sound Quality and battery drain (Since there is only a mini usb port i will need to use this feature to have my own earphones working)
I charged up my DS970's the other day but didn't get around to testing them with this yet. Will do that this w/e
for a small amuont you can get a mini-usb to3.5mm adaptor so you can use any headset and for a little more you can get an adaptor with a microphone for full call functionality
- GPS: Will it Work with others programs? (not just only tomtom). Im asking this because N95 GPS only work with nokia maps.
so far I have used the internal GPS for TomTom, google maps, microsoft live search maps and also the old Microsoft Streets so I expect you can use any program. The GPS is accessed via COM4.
- Screen: Is it visible at direct sunlight?
its as good (or bad) as most other device. P1 is probably a little better
- Battery: It can always be used for all day long without need charging?
how long is a piece of string
- Messaging: Can you write messages (with your fingers) using touch screen with just one hand easily? It got delivery reports and fast contacts ( a list with last contacts used like on SE phones)
you can certainly dial numbers on the on screen pad with your fingers but the buttons on screen qwerty keyboard is probably a little too small. I much prefer to simply slide the full keyboard out myself

did you order yours ofiaich ? im loving mine! havent been able to load tomtom on it yet though as i havent got access to a windows machine at the mo
Posted by ofiaich
Hi Dicky Snapples!
I haven't ordered yet, because I am not at home to collect! I think I will order soon but.....
still not 100% sure because I tend not to use mobile internet and my main interests are music and video. Ninety five percent of my email is Japanese so I would need to install Japanese support.
I wonder whether to keep my W950i and buy an Archos 704 WiFi or something similar.
Of course, that means carrying 2 devices and perhaps a third if I put my camera in my pocket ! I have gps on an old Tungsten T3 as well as on my W950i.
My head hurts at the moment ! Managed to save 100 pounds by selling unwanted items !

i installed tomtom, but the free maps doesnt include Guernsey. so i still cant test it out!
Posted by masseur
heres 2 free progs you can install to test the GPS
google maps (the windows mobile version).
windows live search. The GPS works in the maps there
Posted by ofiaich
Wow!!
Just saw your link masseur and just installed Google Maps on my old T3 !
I was impressed ! But my Google Map map defaulted to Tokyo
Amazing !! This is making me think it is time to order the TyTn II !
I am reading now but can google maps be access using a GPS Receiver such as a Holux?
Ofiaich
Posted by masseur
The native windows mobile google maps suports GPS but I'm pretty sure the java version doesn't. I have no idea about the palm version but if it does support GPS then I'm sure the holux will work for you
edit: googling suggests the palm version does support GPS so you should be right

Hi!
I found a small program called 'Where am I' which gives the coordinates from the Holux, these can then be found in Google Maps.
But the two don't work simultaneous, I think because of 'port sharing' .
I don't understand well, but I think GPRS with Vodafone is weak where I live but a few miles down the road the 'globe icon' appears on my phone.
I think the TyTn II must be so much better than my old Tungsten T3 for google maps etc.
The only thing I need to learn now is how well the TyTn II works with Vodafone services. I guess not a problem..... ?

wheres the best (cheapest) place to buy tomtom maps? i want western europe
Posted by masseur
The TyTN II can handle the provision of GPS data to multiple applications. I believe this is a feature of WM5/6 when you enable the GPS settings option "Automatically manage GPS"
I see no reason why you shouldn't have the same success on Vodafone that I have with t-mobile
Posted by dicky
how do you get google maps to use the gps? its seems to always want to connect to my Edge connection
Posted by ofiaich
Hi masseur,
I suppose what I was wondering was - if Vodafones services work well on the TyTn II because I guess Vodafone alter the HTC firmware for their own services. I read something like that over at xda developers forum...
I wondered but you have success with T-Mobile so I guess it is not an issue..

@Dicky Snapples, google maps needs a data connection to download the map information as you move around the maps. To get google maps to use the GPS to fix your current position just go to menu > Track Location
@ofiaich, ah. mine is sim free, of course. Good luck with the Voda one
Posted by dicky
great,thanks.
one more question. when i take a picture, they come out the wrong way round like this..
although i am holding the phone correctly(on its side)
Posted by masseur
yeah, its a bit strange isn't it. I just rotate them on my PC as I don't see any setting in the camera options to change that behaviour
Posted by dicky
yeah ive been rotating them too. which is fine for printing or general viewing, but if i rotate them, then save it. and try and upload it to esato....it goes back like the picture above, oh well!
thanks again
Posted by Foxhunter
With thanks from Modaco.com and peterbonge:
I don't know if it's already posted elsewhere here in the forums, but this isn't really a bug. It is a wrong setting in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\Software\\HTC\\Camera\\Image
Change the value named "EnableEncodePortrait" to 0 and the images will be saved "unrotated".
Posted by masseur
nice one. just tested and yes... that does what it says on the box
thats what I love about WM... like windows there's always a registry fix that sorts what you want
Posted by dicky
do you have to change that from a pc?
Posted by masseur
no, on the TyTN II itself using a registry editor
Posted by dicky
thanks.
just tried it and it worked.
thanks to you both!
Posted by miguel82
Cant wait for mine... it arrives in 2 days!
Posted by masseur
right, I've put the full western europe tomtom maps on mine now and I'm pretty happy with that
In fact I'm just about convinced to swap my sims around to make this the primary device now and may even sell the P1!
Posted by ofiaich
Hi masseur,
I think I will be placing an order very soon!
can I ask what memory card you are using? I am thinking 8 Gig microSD card are available now...
I think TomTom Navigator 6 DVD is the one for the TyTn II and I can install through the TomTom Home the same as for the W950i.
Ofiaich
Posted by masseur
I'm using a sandisk 4gb micro SDHC at present. I haven't seen 8gb available yet although 6gb are out. I heard November is when we'll see 8gb.
Yeah, TT navigator 6 is what you get on the CD with the TyTN II together with the ability to download one city (such as London) to try it out.
I bought western europe maps direct from the tomtmo site and downloaded last night (950mb+!)... and yes, you need to install the Home program to do the download and the install.
I still prefer the interface of my Garmin nuvi 670 but the tomtom will get me there well enough if I don't have the Garmin with me.
Posted by miguel82
I´m just curious... i have a tomtom one with portugal and spain maps... Will they fit on navigator6 of tytn2? or i have to download new ones from tomtom site? Any idea?
Posted by masseur
my guess is that you would need to buy new maps since your licence is only for one device.
the tomtom Home application asks for the device id which will be different from your One gps id
Posted by miguel82
I think you´re right but hope not!! loll

@masseur
mate, have u decided which will be your main? a p1 or tytnII?
btw, have you used the tytnI before? how does it compare between the two?
and how the battery performs?
Posted by masseur
yep, made the switch. TyTN II is numero uno now
yeah, I had the TyTN, and the k-jam, and the Jam, and the JasJar and... well.. anyway... The TyTN II feels like a more refined/finished product and definitly the mm they have shaved off to make it thinner makes a noticeable difference. The slide out keyboard is as good to type on as the original TyTN but they have rearranged the front buttons so they are all around the d-pad (previously internet and email were at the top). The camera is a little better for its increased resolution but still missing things like macro (although the autofocus does a reasonable job). They also removed the IR port.
I browse extensively in the morning and evening on the train to/from work and I've also noticed that it holds a 3g/hsdpa data connection much better than the P1.
The GPS is heaps better than the one in the N95 that I had and outdoors, locks take seconds only, and indoors no more than 40 seconds.
as I've mentioned before though, the battery is the one down point. Its the same capacity as the original TyTN (1350mAh) but lasts probably 20% less.
Posted by jakontil
great stuff mate! sure things it makes me up my mind, i'd patiently wait for the tytnII to arrive here
Posted by dicky
I still can't get my gps to connect. it just says "waiting for valid gps signal"
might be because im in Guernsey....will have to wait till next month when im in the uk to test it I suppose!
Posted by masseur
gps is global so I'm sure its not your location. I've never been to a place on the planet where I couldn't get a GPS lock. Mind you I haven't been to either pole yet
on the expansys forums there are a couple of people who haven't been able to get a lock so I wonder if there isn't perhaps a few with problems.
the message you mention suggests it recognises something from the GPS otherwise you'd get the message "no gps device!"
you have run the quickGPS application and clicked download to get the latest satelite positions?
Posted by Dogmann
@Masseur
I'm sure it does hold a better 3G/HSDPA connection as the P1 only has 3G and doesn't have HSDPA but with out meaning to get picky I'm sure most knew what you meant. But thought it may be worth mentioning unless some suddenly thought the P1 does in fact have HSDPA which of course it doesn't.

yes, you're quite right of course. to explain further then...
on the same journey using 2 t-mobile sim cards the P1 would drop back to gprs or lose the data connection completely noticeably more than the TyTN II. I did this check on most of my commutes last week and there is no doubt.
Posted by dicky
I ran rhe quick gps app, loaded googlemaps which after around 30 secs said - Your GPS receiver does not appear to be responding.
Make sure you have a GPS receiver, that it is turned on and correctly configured to work with Google Maps for Mobile. See below for instructions.
if I load tomtom it says looking for valid gps..

are there any settings I need to change anywhere?
Posted by masseur
go to start > settings > system > external gps
on the programs tab it should show COM4
on thehardware tab I have (none) for GPS hardware port, 4800 baud rate
on the access tab the manage gps automatically should be enabed
