A few weeks ago I got a state-of the art laptop for quite a lot. Its very reliable without Vista. Vista is a paint in the arse and please no Vista fanboys cos ive had it with BSOD' today (It was because of UAC). Anyway back on topic, here are the specs for this big bahima.
Model: TOSHIBA Satellite P200-144
Hard Disk 400GB
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo T7200
Nvidia geforce go 7600 256mb
Those are the main stuff.
Is this good for another 2-3 years
Posted by Johnex
That is not a super laptop. I bet that harddisk is a 5600rpm or lower. I have a 160gb 7200rpm 3gbit tranfser hd on mine.
1440 x 900 screen res is not good. I have 1680x1050 native res on mine.

@mechanic
What's so bad about Vista? I turned off UAC, and it feels so much nicer than XP.

the graphics card sadly doesn't support Direct X 10 which is a turn off.
as for Johnex's comment of "1440 x 900 screen res is not good"
I disagree.
1440X900 is MORE than enough and it is the highest res supported by games.
Posted by shyam335
yeah im also of the opinion that 1440*900 is good enough for 15" or even 17".
and higher the resolution, more the graphic power you need to play in native resolution.
and i would've preferred a santa rosa based laptop..

Nothing like showing off Johnex. Nice laptop mate still, how much it set you back?
Posted by MWEB
It's HD is actually 4200rpm, but that aside your laptop is quite nice and more than acceptable for a couple of years of use, Vista is visually appealing but far from perfect as yet, i run Vista business and XP media on seperate partitions.
Posted by Johnex
@Amnesia and Shyam: It obvious that you will not play at 1680x1050, its for the screen res when working and doing other things like CAD, graphics design and others, where low screen resolution is useless.
@Danny: My lappy cost a mere 1800 euros, a bargain in my opinion.
EDIT: Also, watching movies at 1680x1050 is great, all the series i have are in HDTV 720p size, and that fits perfectly on the screen at the native resolution of 1680x1050, it would be disgusting to have to scale the movies down on the screen to watch.

@johnex
I dont know why anyone would use his laptop for graphic editing anyways. I think 14xx res is good enough for gaming, browsing and normal windows usage. Its certainly not bad as you put it.
Posted by amnesia
I'm a graphic designer, I edit videos (Full HD videos too), game, and watch videos and 1440X900 is perfect.
More than enough space.
I also have a 19" monitor.
Posted by Johnex
Well, if you tried 1680x1050, then you would never go back. I assume you guys don't have computers that handle 1680x1050?
Posted by amnesia
my computer definately can. It's true that the higher res, the more desk space, but I prefer 1440X900. Perhaps when I get a 21" I'll move to a higher res.
Full specs are
It's a E6400 Core 2 Duo.
4 GB High speed ram
250 gb X 2 raid
7900 Gto 512mb X 2 Sli set up
Asus P5ne-Sli Deluxe Gaming Edition
Asus DVD+- Combo Dual Layer
BT + Wifi
Three Fan Tunnel
6 USB hi speed
Posted by Johnex
Seems my processor is better, as far as that goes with modern ones. E6400 only has 2mb l2 cache, mine has 4mb. They are both around 2ghz, yours is 2.13, mine is 2.0, but double the memory overpowers the extra speed. You did not specify the speed of the ram, i got 2gb 667mhz on mine, but my guess is you have more, 800mhz i would say. HDD also, it might be raid, but what are the other specs? I have the world fastest laptop hdd, its the newest fujitzu, came out last month. http://www.fujitsu.com/us/ser[....]hdd/mobile/mhw2160bj-sata.html
Notice that your stationary is as good as my laptop, which says allot.

why dont u give the full specs of your laptop?
Posted by KingBooker5
I dont even no the specs of my samsung laptop!
All I know is that it gets the job done at super fast speeds.
Isnt that the point at the end of the day?
Posted by Johnex
Not really no. If you use your pc to the max, you want to know what you are getting.

Feel free to read. All is there except the hdd, that was replaced 1 month ago.

so you are saying that your laptop is better my desktop because of... the processor? (Correction for satisfaction: statement was "your stationary is as good as mine") It depends what you do. Graphics wise my system is powerfull (but of course I wish I owned 2 x 8800s)
I'm not trying to compete but I'm trying to understand.
The benchmark test here http://www.mersenne.org/bench.htm shows the processor comparisons in order of performance.
As for the details of my specs
I am using Overclockers Gold ram
4GB (2 x 2GB) PC2-6400C5 Dual Channel Vista Gold Series DDR2
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-086-OC
Hard disks: 1 seagate, 1 maxtor (same company basically). 7200 rpm.
My processor is stock at the moment and nothing is overclocked.
Did you run Benchmark '05? What do you get?
On a side note, you made it seem like 1440X900 wasn't good for the poor guy when it's more than enough.

Well, since "the poor guy" said he had a super laptop, then i pointed out that it was not. Again, i did not say anything about graphics and ram. Also, where in my posts does it say that i said my laptop was better than your stationary? You seem to be putting words into my mouth. Go back and read my posts and rectify yourself.
EDIT>
Downloading 3dmark06 for your pleasure, will take 10mins or so, since its 600mb big.

Can you please take a deep breath and relax?
"They are both around 2ghz, yours is 2.13, mine is 2.0, but double the memory overpowers the extra speed."
The way I see it, the guy was obviously very happy with his laptop and wanted some opinions.
You gave yours and everyone else gave theirs.
edit: please use '05 it's smaller and is more accurate that '06
The reason I asked for the benchmark is because my friend sitting next to me is searching for a laptop that is worth it after is Fujitsu-Seimens died

Well, any Dell XPS M1330, or virtually anything from Rock or Alienware would make your Asus look rather ordinary indeed, there is ALWAYS someone, somewhere with something better!!
You might think upon that BEFORE slagging off the threadstarters Laptop or anyone elses.
Posted by Johnex
virtually anything from Rock or Alienware
Haha, that made me laugh. Alienware has become like Sony, just another brand that gives low end products for a higher price. It is a misconception to think that they are better. Alienware laptops are a joke. For the same price as the best alienware, you can get an equivalent to the bone acer, hp or asus laptop for less money, and even start saving for the next one!

Alienware were good before they became too commercial.
I agree, their laptops aren't that great.
The Dell is huge, but strong.
I used to have a custom built Toshiba P20 (three ever made) and it was the most powerfull in the world (at it's time). I always support Toshiba, but they're not known for much power (unless you look at the Qosmio which is goregeous in rare white).
I haven't heard of Rock before. I'll check them out.
However at the price of that Asus, it's tempting.
Please use '05 instead of'06 if you can.

haha I really couldnt help but laugh at this thread, really am failing to understand what this bragging of a high resolution 15inch screen and 7200rpm hdd is all about.
1440 x 900 is completely fine as is 5400rpm drives.
seriously, if you are into such detail of a mere processor cache 2mb/4mb -which in real life you would see very little differences, you should not be messing with notebooks as in the world of desktops there are quad cores, raid and raptors drives at 10000rpm etc etc.

lol, it would be more disgusting to scale the movies down to 15.4 inches!!!
And as for why some similarly specced laptops can be more expensive, well it might be because some laptops are designed for the performance from the design stage; things like the all components being cool properly, minimal fan noise, battery life etc and even little things such as making sure the palmrests remain cool by arranging the components... its these things that usually make them more expensive.
For example; asus f3 is based on a standard chassis that can be configured with celeron processors that means its not particularly optimised for particulary higher end components, ie the laptop may run hotter, fans noiserer and battery worse, compared to a laptop with the same spec, more expensive but that has been designed to take the higher end bits it should run cooler and quieter etc...
Bit like a tuned hatchback compared with a proper sportscar...
Just a thought...

I am awaiting response. Give us the 3Dmark score
Posted by clank
Just my opinion but i feel getting a 17" higher res. screen and a 7950 go instead of a x1700 is a good buy for just 260 odd euros more. That alienware doesnt seem like a bad buy at all and seems to very powerful indeed.
@poster nice lappy you got there mate. Thats more hdd space than i got in my desktop
However you should give vista another try. I've turned UAC off as well and i find it be an overall more pleasant experience than xp.

@clank: 2263 euros, thats 463 euros more. I took into regard the screen and the gfx, for about 200 euros, therefore, 263 to my pocket.
Installing 3Dmark06, since 05 did not work on vista, removed it after i installed and ran the app.

Well, mine does not get warm at all where i have my hands for gaming. The right part of the keyboard does, since that is where the gfx is. The F3 is a series, there are different models in that series, the JP part, as well as sub series with different model numbers. Mine is the AK031M. Not all are based on the same chasis, each model is build specifically for its hardware, taking into account cooling and noise. Battery lasts for 4 hours on normal use, 2 hours for gaming at the highest res i can have without lag. And as you can see, the alienware with the same specs, has no battery specs, thats because it probably only has around 1 hour for gaming, and 3 for normal usage.
Posted by QVGA
What games are you talking about? Because even the 7900series suffer at high resolutions
Posted by Johnex
I said the highest so it does not lag. You need to read more carefully man.

All source games, farcry, driver, fear, flatout2, bf2. All the top games really.
