but... I think we shouldn't be generalising about Americans as you only have to look on ebay to find that almost any country has nutters willing to pay crazy prices for just about anything!

Thats not entirely true, because i used to deal with a lot of tourists from all over the world in one of my old jobs, and the weirdest requests used to come from Americans.
So it doesn't surprise me one bit that someone would want to pay over $300 for a paper bag....i've seen far worse!
