well, I feel I have to comment on this one.
what a total rip-off! $80-odd bucks, thats £40 to replace a battery!
why couldn't they just do what just about every other phone manufacturer does and make the battery user replaceable by simple means of removing a battery cover and popping the battery. That way iphone users can carry spares for long trips too.
and you can bet if/when this comes to UK it ain't gonna be £40!

here is the faq where it also includes the terms and conditions for the rental phone where it says that ownership remains with Apple at all times and there are various clauses covering loss etc etc
so I don't think you'll be getting a second iphone for $29

Thats a bit of a pain in the arse if you ask me, but saying that the batterey last 300 - 400 charges so i doubt many first hand buyers will suffer the battery problems.

agreed. so depending on how quickly 2nd generation iphone comes out Apple will be getting 2nd hand users to pay too!
I do think its good that they give advice on battery care though but I wonder how many people will actually read that

Looking at the price of OEM batteries on the Carphone Warehouse web-site, $80/£40 seems about average for an original battery, and CPW prices don't include fitting.
No doubt there will be cheaper third-party alternatives by the time 300-400 charge cycles has gone.
I remember getting an original K700 replacement battery and although I didn't pay (it was in warranty), it was down as £39.99 on the receipt.

I certainly don't buy batteries from CPW but thats because I have a choice. I get them from mobilefun, L8shop and even expansys for much less than those prices and they are also original.
and thats really the point, we have a choice where to get the battery from so why did Apple not learn from their ipod mistakes and make it user replaceable? almost every device, not just mobile phones, have user replaceable batteries these days
there is really no excuse

I for one don't think the price is an issue as its about the same as normal OEM batteries like you've stated Jools,
But its the fact that I need to send my phone back to apple to have it fitted. Thats 3 days I won't have my phone for and I don't think I should have to do that due to what in my eyes is a design fault.

Yeah, it was the price issue I was addressing...
After seeing the disassembled iPhone pictures I can't see any physical reason why the back of the iPhone couldn't be removable and the battery user-replaceable.
I know Apple like their nice clean designs, but this seems more of a money-making decision than a practical one.
