Hey. Someone know anything about an application or something that can set your mobile phone up as an radar speedtrap warner? Got the info from a source. Say your phone gives an alarm or vibrates before the speedtrap picks your car up. Sounds handy! Got a samsung d600. Info anyone?

wat kind of waves does the speed gun send...

If you dont mind paying theres this

and what is it's principle...

Posted by Wapdragon
Thanx for replying. Im not sure what type of wave it sends out. I think you get different types that emitts different type of waves. It works with a sender and receiver. Willing to pay as long as its not an arm and a leg!

There is nothing for a phone that picks up speed traps by sensing them. You can use a GPS device and software like wayfinder to locate known speed traps.
There are several ways speed traps work.
1. RADAR
2. Laser
3. Camera+ timing

Just heard that you can do it with a Nokia by adding 5 zero's in the closed group setting. Apparently it interferes with the waves and they cant pick u up. True?

there actually are 3rd party apps for symbian 60 3rd phnes and also for wm's that claim to detect radar traps!
but the best way to beat speed traps is this: don't f*cking speed!

speed away - as long as you do it in dublin it's the only way to survive: stay in motion! naah: behave!

... no, I haven't! no, you won't
but you're welcome anyway!

Where im from some speed restrictions r quite silly. I do alot of long distance driving and some places u gotta do 80 or 100 km/p for 2o mins on an open road with no houses nearby! If speedtraps r good y call them traps?

there's a point! I'm actually not for "hiding" them!!! is the most cynical, money-grabbing approach to road-safety!

the first two can be 'sighted', since both work on the principle of sending and recieving waveforms...
Whatever app that is, it'd be able to detect the incoming wave ('that you are under the scanner'), and warn you so that you do the needful at the earliest... IMHO...
.
aatuif...

So Aatuif do u know the application or do u only know that it exist? Sounds interesting!

Aint sure about the app, maybe you try searching...

I have Wayfinder and TomTom.
Wayfinder is rubbish as a warning system, that's why I bought TomTom which will remind you of static cameras and average speed cameras ihave to drive thousands of miles a year and cannot afford to lose my licence due to a momentary lapse.

The only infallible way to avoid hand helds is behave properly,

I am in the motorsport business and my advice is race on the track NOT the street, in my experience very few street drivers ability's match those of their vehicles (no matter what they think!!!) it was the main reason why my recovery business used to do so well!!!!

very good!!! well put! thanks!

Posted by Wapdragon
With all due respect i think u r missing the argument mr nittro fan. The aim here is not to race in the streets. Its merely to get warned about being suckered by the traffic cops when traveling long distances. Sometimes when traveling it gets kinda hard doing 80 or 100km/h on an open road. Another thing: if the max speed on the road is 120km/h, why build cars that can go faster? Shud'nt all cars locally b maxed at 120? We shud get a tolerance of 20km/h

Posted by aatuif
sounds a bit reasonable...

For the love of God, please STOP this nonsense! Hell, I want to detect radar with a potatoe and two paperclips, but that ain't happening either. "Adding 5 0"s to this string...." ?!! WTF are you people smoking? If you think you're going to detect radar waves with any phone you need help. Seriously.

Probably cant be done with your phone dude it doesn't exactly have a laser detector!which is the most popular method used in SA.DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR AND GO TO AUTO STYLE AND BUY A LASER DETECTOR...just spoke to a cop the other day and laser DETECTORS are legal to use in SA but the JAMMERS are illegal and you can get heavy punishment for using a jammer.other wise you could always pull out a twenty for the cop that pulls you over

Posted by paul101
maybee n95 coz i think i heard has sat nav and if a database of cameras can be uploaded..... you do the maths

Posted by Wapdragon
Rambo the only smoke around is from ur brain trying 2 figure this all out. There is nothing that cant b dun pal. Do u live in the stone age cos i dont. Couple of years ago ppl like u thought sending pictures with a phone cant b dun. Look at us now! Doing it like its second nature. If u hate the string jump of a bridge. Paul i like the N95 and am busy fruiting the idea. Peace yall. Im gonna do this!

Posted by Wapdragon
Okay this is 4 the haters. By now its clear (not 100%) that the waves send out by these traps cant b detected by any phone right? So listen 2 this and yes its crazy. If it cant b dun how about me researching with some clever mobile software designers a application that can detect these lazer or radar waves. I mean, the phone pics up a network signal right? These foreign waves must somehow have an effect on this network signal and the phones circuitry 4 that split second. This designed app must pick this change up and produce a audible output. Mission impossible? Watch this space!

Posted by aatuif
best of luck...

Posted by Wapdragon
Thanx buddy. Will surely need it! Thanx 4 all the input.

Posted by Falcon786
N95 doesn't give you speed traps in SA...find out about the garmin properly i think it does show you permanent cameras but obviously not all will be seen as it doesn't actually detect the traps but rather relies on a database.you have a point on the fact that the phone does indeed detect changes in reception but the number of possible interferances with the same pattern would be too great to actually decipher which one is a laser interfering resulting in way too many false warnings.btw i'm not a hater like that other dude i'm just tryin to point out some things you need to take into account...oh and if you do succeed i'll be your first customer for the program

Posted by Wapdragon
Hi falcon. Get ur point on the interference part. Yes filtering the laser interference will b a big challenge. There is so many factors to consider and thats y its my priority project a.t.m. Already did some simple interference tests in a well known speedtrap area. Gonna lose some sleep on this one. Loving every minute!

Posted by rambo47
If the N95 can't even pick up 3G phone frequencies in the U.S., to you think it will magically find radar or laser signals!? C'mon, really! It doesn't have the necessary hardware. No software will make up for this. It's like saying you're going to turn your AMC Pacer into a Ferrari with some clever software mods. Dial the number, quick!

Posted by aatuif
@wap, afaik a mobile as such with an app can't detect interferences...
i think you need some special hardware for that... some detector sort of thing... go thru the web, you'll find some useful lit...
.
seeing your enthusiasm, i'm pretty sure that you'll end up with some good stuff...
best wishes for your project...

TomTom, is both HW and SW take a look at www.tomtom.com I bought the Navigator 6 product and installed it on my P990 its very good.

@nitro
you should see closing time here in Ireland: the local cops walk from pub to pub to make sure everyone's out by midnight, and then they watch them stumble towards their cars...wtf "good night, paddy"...i've actually seen a cop help some drunk search for his car keys

We've just launched a service in SA called SMS Radar,
basic idea is to join an area you drive and start getting tips from other drivers sent over SMS to the system.
so you join Cape Town, then whenever you see any police acting dodgy (hiding in the bushes trapping) you write in an sms where you saw him and send to 33245.
then all members in the CT area will get an sms with your alert.

we've made it free while we get suggestions and perfect the system.
then we'll make it R1 to get an alert (always free to tip).
before we start billing we'll warn everyone in a free sms, so all you sms sceptics out there can roll your eyes and bail out

check it out, write suggests to support@smsradar.co.za if you like
