On June 25, 2007, Benoit and his family were found dead in their home in Atlanta. It was first reported to fans of the WWE via WWE Mobile. There are no exact details are known about this death at this time. [1] Through their website, World Wrestling Entertainment also released the following statement...
"World Wrestling Entertainment is deeply saddened to report that today Chris Benoit and his family were found dead in their home. There are no further details at this time, other than the Benoit family residence is currently being investigated by local authorities.
Tonight’s Raw on USA Network will serve as a tribute to Chris Benoit and his family. WWE extends its sincerest thoughts and prayers to the Benoit family’s relatives and loved ones in this time of tragedy.
WWE cancelled the scheduled live Raw show scheduled for June 25, and was replaced by a pre-recorded tribute to Benoit in its place.
Fayette County, Georgia police are investigating Benoit's house following the discovery of the bodies, and no details have been released other than to announce that Benoit was not shot to death.

According to Wikipedia it seems Chris Benoit killed his family then himself....
Fayette County, Georgia police are investigating Benoit's house following the discovery of the bodies. Lieutenant Tommy Pope of the Fayette County Sheriff's Department reported to ABC News that it was being investigated as a double murder-suicide, saying that over the weekend of June 23-24, Benoit killed his wife and son, then on Monday, June 25, killed himself. And the police were not searching for any suspects outside of the house, as the instruments of death were located on scene. Adding to speculation, Benoit had canceled a recent pay per view match against C.M. Punk for the ECW title citing personal reasons. After he had missed several recent appointments, WWE officials asked the police to check on the house where the family was found dead.

I know Benoit always seemed a bit insane, but that was part of his role.

This is unbelievable.....
Chris really was actually the best when it came to actual athletic wrestling.
The stuff he did in the ring wasnt just by being trained but it was a tallent and gift. I hope he never killed his family and himself though..
I remember when Eddie Guerrero died me and my cousin were at are mates bday party and wrestling was on the tv and they were doing the tributes. We both watch wrestling and he broke down!

He was one of the best in the ring...just some time ago watched one of his last matches against Bobby Lashley.He looked to be in some personal stress,his eyes showed it.In fact it has been this way since wrestlemania...he never looked like he's completely into his on screen character..his matches weren't of the same level they used to be.
But for 20 years there have been few who've been able to better him in the ring.Will forever be remembered as a true wrestling legend.

Was really really gutted when i heard about this......
Went to watch Raw that i had sky +'d when i came in from work and there Vinnie Mac in the middle of the ring in an empty arena. I thought wtf's happening here as firstly Vinnie Mac is meant to be dead!!!!! (one of the storylines) Then it came out.... Really a shame.
If anyone saw Vengeance (i bought it) he was scheduled to fight CM Punk for the ECW title but at the last minute Benoit pulled out "due to personal issues" so i wonder if anything was up then. (that was sunday night)
Anyway, he will be missed ALOT, probably one of the best pure wrestlers out there....

How do we know he killed his family I mean, he was alive the day after. How do we know when he came home after a show, he came to his house, found his family dead then commited suicide? No one knows yet hopefully thats the case.
I just hope its a work by WWE as unlikely as it is.

Benoit failed to appear both at Saturday’s live event in Beaumont, Texas, and WWE’s Vengeance: Night of Champions in Houston Sunday night, after informing WWE of a family emergency. Several curious text messages sent by Benoit early Sunday morning prompted concerned friends to alert Richard Hering, VP of Government Relations for WWE, Inc. Hering, in turn, spoke with Fayette County sheriffs Monday, and requested they respond to the Benoit residence to check on him and his family.
Authorities representing the Sheriff’s Department initially had a difficult time entering Benoit’s new Fayetteville home Monday afternoon, which had been guarded by two large German Shepherds roaming freely around the property. Once authorities entered the residence, they quickly located the bodies of Benoit, Nancy and Daniel. WWE was notified of the discovery at approximately 4 p.m.
At 10 p.m. Monday night, Lt. Pope held a press conference in conjunction with Scott Ballard, the district attorney for Fayette County. The press conference officially ruled authorities’ findings as a double murder-suicide from within the home.
WAGA, a FOX-owned and operated television station in Atlanta, reported that investigators believe Benoit killed his wife and 7-year-old son over the weekend, then himself on Monday.
The three bodies have been received by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s crime lab, in Decatur, Ga., where autopsies will be performed Tuesday morning. Toxicology reports will not become available for at least two weeks.
WWE.com has further information relating to both the investigation and the cause of death, but the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department has requested that WWE.com not release any additional details at this time.

I was going to say Steroids could be the cause of this whole thing.
Steroids can do some pretty weird things. I remember when my dad started taking them for illness, he was a mellow calm man. But on steroids I remember him holding me against the wall in an argument over a screen saver.
However when I took steroids due to illness, they did the complete opposite to me and firstly filled me with so much energy and excitment and then I hit a depression which lasted a few months.
Its hardly unheard of for a wrestler to be on steroids.
If the storys are true, I have a lor of sympathy for his family. But not him.

Also here in South Africa fans of the WWE are in shock, spoke to my younger brother and he can't believe it. The WWE needs to do something about steriod use amongst there stars or maybe the FDA needs to force Vince MacMahon into action.

Canadian wrestler Chris Benoit had injected steroids before killing his wife and son and then hanging himself, tests have revealed.
Roid rage row rumbles onInvestigators found that Benoit, 40, had 10 times the normal level of testosterone in his body.
Toxicology tests revealed that Benoit had also injected his son Daniel, seven, with a sedative before he was suffocated.
Anti-anxiety drug Xanax and the painkiller hydrocodone were also found in the US World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) star's system.
Anabolic steroids had been found in Benoit's home, fuelling speculation that the "Canadian Crippler" had killed his family in a steroid-induced fit of anger or "roid rage".
Benoit left no suicide note and the police have struggled to find a motive.
