From MacWorld.co.uk
Days before the product ships in the US, Apple today announced that the iPhone will offer much more extensive battery life than first promised.
The shipping device will offer up to eight hours of talk time, six hours of internet use, seven hours of video playback or 24 hours of audio playback.
The iPhone will also provide up to 250 hours (over 10 full days) of standby time, the company revealed in its first statement on standby time.
Apple had originally promised battery life sufficient for up to five hours of talk time, internet use or video watching, and up to 16 hours of audio playback. (The page linked to here is the official iPhone specifications page, and is likely to be updated with new information soon).
Apple also confirmed another improvement - this time to the device's screen. "The entire top surface of iPhone, including its stunning 3.5-inch display, has been upgraded from plastic to optical-quality glass to achieve a superior level of scratch resistance and optical clarity," says the company.
Comments from Apple CEO Steve Jobs confirm the company's designs on the Smartphone market. "With eight hours of talk time, and 24 hours of audio playback, iPhone's battery life is longer than any other 'Smartphone' and even longer than most MP3 players," he said.
He added: "We've also upgraded iPhone's entire top surface from plastic to optical-quality glass for superior scratch resistance and clarity. There has never been a phone like iPhone, and we can't wait to get this truly magical product into the hands of customers starting just 11 days from today."
The device ships in the US on 29 June in a 4GB model for $499 and an 8GB model for $599. The device will be sold in the US through Apple's retail and online stores, and through AT&T's select retail stores.

Dont u remember what we got for 600€ in the shape of the p990i????The shittiest SE to date! The iphone will @ least run stable OS.

iPhone, junkPhone. I'm never gonna get one of these. Never ever.
And ain't it just typical apple to 'add' features at the last moment? I'm sure it's just another trick to get attention. I'd bet it's been the plan all along.

Nice improvements, but I'm still not buying one until
- it has a SIM card slot
- it's sold unlocked and unbranded
- it has worldwide-usable 3G
- Apple allows 3rd-party native application development
I would also like to see a user-replaceable battery and a memory card slot, but I won't hold my breath.
Until than, I'm holding out hope for a US-3G-compatible Nokia N95. It's a much better value.

The P990i was way overpriced. A stable OS is yet to be seen but lets hope.
Good news on the talktime, very impressive. Does it mean that they have put in a bigger heavier battery?
$499 converted into UK money is about £250 which makes it cheaper than a w610i!.

yeah way too many question marks over it, especially the availability of applications for Mac. A smartphone is only as good as its application base.

> especially the availability of applications for Mac
what does the availability of applications for the Mac have to do with the iPhone?
> And ain't it just typical apple to 'add' features at the last moment?
Typical? Name one other time Apple has done that? They rarely, if ever, pre-announce products before release, so how can they 'add' features?
And these aren't added features. They've just finalised battery details, and changed one manufacturing material. Nothing added or new, just finalised.
Would you rather Apple didn't improve products before they're released? Maybe you'd be happier for them to announce improvements after they've sold a few hunded thousand, just to piss off the early adopters! You'd moan then too!

@jools
buddy, the iphone runs on mac os
Posted by Jools
@QVGA
You're wrong - the iPhone does NOT run Mac OS X - it runs OS X.
http://www.apple.com/iphone/technology/specs.html
The iPhone OS is based on Mac OS X, but isn't Mac OS X - it is OS X.
Notice the lack of the work 'Mac' in the operating systems name? This is because it is not possible to run applications made for the desktop computer based Mac OS X system. So whether there are Mac applications has no implications whatsoever for the iPhone.

As far as I know only programs designed by Apple will run on the iPhone. Apple are not letting third partys to develop apps for it.

I'm sure i heard Steve Jobs say in his keynote that there going to be giving developers iPhones so they can start developing software for it straight away once it is released.

Apple announced at last weeks World Wide Developer Conference, that third-party apps can be created for the iPhone:
iPhone to Support Third-Party Web 2.0 Applications
The only difference is that these are Web 2.0 apps, not specific OS X apps.
There's a few already available:
OneTrip - Safari or Firefox needed

It does have a slot for a SIM card. It's a GSM phone. How would it work without?
Unfortunately, uninformed people post things without checking facts.

ahhh, perhaps a silly question, but, what happens when you drop your phone on a concrete suface for example? the glass would break (shatter?) easily, no?
Posted by haynesycop
Don't drop it would be the thing to do lol. When i eventually get one it will be wrapped in cotton wool for sure, hehehe.

Am i missing something with the iphone, what exactly is so great and revolutionary about it? If anything it seems to be missing stuff.

massive brilliant screen, unique "revolutionary" UI (OSX based).. lots of onboard storage.. (only a few phones can match this today), wifi and a pretty complete package as a cellphone... a few things are missing and it may not be for everyone but the potential is there...

I wonder where the older spec phones will be going?

I wonder how the improved talk and standby times translate into real world usage though. That screen looks like a huge battery eater.
