Monthly Fee to use GPS for N95 in California?

i am considering this with T-Mobile in San Francisco. If i get this phone in Asia, i will have to download the US map somewhere, correct?

Also, someone told me Nokia charges a monthly fee to use the GPS function here. can anyone verify this? i thought with any GPS units, all you need is the maps and you are all set to go. for example, you can buy any garmin unit and not have to pay any monthly fee to use it.

anyone has input on this?
