Can you all do me a favour please? (Quick, one-question online poll)

Hi everyone,

My girlfriend and I feel very strongly about the issue of the UK television license fee. We feel that, especially nowadays, it's preposterous that people in the UK are forced to pay for the BBC channels whether we wish to watch them or not when there are plenty of other channels that have to support themselves through advertising and other means.

So I'd like to invite everyone to take part in a simple, one-question poll that I've set up on a freebie site here:

http://snappoll.com/poll/199277.php

It'll only take a few seconds, and the freebie site isn't full of spyware or anything like that!

Even if you're not from the UK, I'd like you to take part too. Do you agree that people in UK should be forced to pay £135.50 on top of their monthly fees for satellite / cable services, just for the privilege of owning a television set or other television receiving equipment?

I'm in the process of setting up a website about the issue, but I'd like to get a vague idea of people's opinions on the subject before it goes live.

Thanks in advance!

... Get rid off advertising, create a plausible viewers forum, and listen to that forums feedback! Stop ignoring half of the population 3/4 of the time; stop dumbing down; question authority; present news in a context; don't say "sports" when you mean men self-importantly f*cking about; more? F*ck the license fee...who pays for a "potential" service? Who buys a product you have no influence on, that you're only allowed to see until you bought it! Stop harassing people who really have no telly... Oh cyco..., you can't tick me off like that I could go on and on - will poll your poll right now!

I cant believe people have voted FOR it...

Well, I suppose many people feel that there is too much TV advertising as it is without the Beeb getting in on the act.

Then there's people who believe the BBC's claim that if the license fee was dropped, the quality of their programs would suffer. Personally, given the drivel that the BBC has released over the past few years, I find this very hard to swallow!

I cant remember the last time i watched anything on the BBC and i never listen to there radio stations either so god knows why i should have to pay for a service i dont use!

just to play devils advocate, i think that as soon as you give advertisers access to the BBC it will become even more biased than it already is.

I believe there should be a complete overhaul of the media, papers and tv, and it should be run by a cooperative, where the people actually own it.
CO-OP TV AND CO-OP PAPERS!!!

It should act together to meet the common needs and aspirations of its members, sharing ownership and making decisions democratically.

Can't argue with that!

*clicks 'yes!'*

ha, erm wasnt meant to hijack your thread cyco

i'm a bit torn on the TV licence fee as i think the whole media needs to be addressed.

(btw @all: a forum is a perfect example of a cooperative media channel, as everyone has input to the content)

Well, actually the site I'm working on goes into the issue of the TV license much further, as obviously it's not a simple yes / no affair. I just think that the fee has got very expensive in recent years and of course advertising is not the only way that the BBC could get revenue. Pay-per-view maybe?

The main thing that ticks me off is that you are FORCED to have a license if you wish to own TV recieving equipment. It's downright dictatorial in my view!

... And you're right - a couple of years ago her in RoI they seriously considered to force customers to show proof of address when purchasing tv-sets/video-recorders! Friends of ours who genuinely haven't had a telly for 15 yrs are systematically harrassed! visits from licens inspectors, invoices etc etc... And I'm not even going to debate the quality of irish tv nor the fact that they absudly believe a state broadcaster relying on potentially 1-2 million license payer can pay their "stars" as much or more than say uk or britain with 20 times the population... Or that the ratings scam has become ridiculous - on more and more days at certain times the numbers add up to 50 to 70 percent of the entire population
What's up with "free-market" and all that rubbish they so heavily promote in their schedule? How about a newspaper license you have to flash before you can buy your paper?

I'm torn here, as an avid listener of Radio 1/2 mostly due to the fact that there are no annoying adverts ie "Buy one window get another window free, I SAID BUY ONE WINDOW GET ANOTHER WINDOW FREE" and "Hi I'm John Leach at the Widnes car centre" Those adverts really piss me off so much so I would rather not listen to the radio at all if ad free, wasn't available. That said you don't have to have a license to listen to BBC radio!

And I don't watch enough TV to warrant paying the extortionate fee, but I do watch TV, so I agree that we should all be given the choice i.e. it is legal to have a television set without the fee but without BBC, and if you want BBC you pay for it, It really isn't fair the way it is set up.

Especially now that when you buy a TV in a store they harass you into giving your details, even if you already have a license.

Yep, and here they forced cable and satellite providers to include state broadcasters in all packages, so that on top of cable subscription you gotta pay a license...

Evening Bump!

Certainly gets my vote. Can't say I watch BBC all that often, nothing to watch.

Posted by KingBooker5
You get my damn vote! However is anything gonna change?

Posted by Cycovision
Probably not. But there will be a petition on the site and I'm not the only one who is attempting to put pressure on the government to change this situation. The more the merrier!

Posted by fatreg
woudn't the BBC make more money by selling crap to UK gold etc etc?

Posted by Cycovision
As far as I know, they already do!

Which is another one of my gripes, they make more money per year than any other UK television station (I'm talking per individual stations here, not including the revenue from parent companies that own independent stations).

Also, did you know that they DO allow advertising already? Any Esato members from India who have watched the BBC World News channel will, I'm sure, confirm that they regularly advertise everything from cars and scooters to air conditioners and life insurance!

Oh!

I've seen ads on BBC...

My auntie in Dubai gets Sky from KSA and that is full of ads!!

shameless..

but we don't need ads here thank you very much mr director general.

One last bump, just in case anyone hasn't seen it yet

Got my vote matey!

Posted by goldenface
I just voted.

If there is a BBC Tax then there should be discounts for the poor.

I don't mind paying the licence fee.

We get BBC Radio (although I don't agree with the huge salaries some of those tossers earn!)

BBC Website - staggering!

Plus the BBC does niche programming, something which you hardly see on commercialised stations.

Plus I hate adverts. In every hour of programming we're forced to watch 20 mins of adverts 20 mins of ads on Sky, ITV etc. This also means that the BeeB has to provide more Programming output each day so its already at a disadvantage.

Its nice to watch a program and have it not interrupted.

@Cycovision

Do you still think we should have a licence if we only have a PC and not a TV to receive TV programming?
