Hi guys, i've got a 8mb (with 120mb unallocated space) sony flash drive. It doesnt work and it cant be formatted. Under properties it shows both used and free space to be 0 bytes and file format to be RAW (which i think is the problem anyway). I need any help i can get to make it work, and how do i access the unallocated space cos disk management cant make new partition. Thanx

You're right! You can't format it because it's already formated with a file system that your device doesn't like!

Assuming you're using a PC with a card reader, try the following:

1. Stick the card in the appropriate slot

2. Right-Click on 'My Computer'

3. Select 'Manage'

4. Double-Click on 'Storage'

5. Find your card, it will have a drive letter like all other drives, very often 'F:'

6. Right-Click on it and select 'Delete Partition'

7. Click 'Yes' or 'OK' to any warnings that you recieve

8. Right-Click on it again and select 'Create Partition'. Follow the prompts.

9. Finally, Right-Click on it again and select 'Format'. Follow the prompts again and you will (hopefully!) have a nice clean, usable card!

If your using a Mac, JoolsG4 is the guy to ask how

thanx @cycovision, fatreg
but unfortunately its not a card (@cycovision), its a removable USB storage device. And also i think i've tried what you suggested but 'delete partition' is not highlighted. I use windows so i'd appreciate any other help.

@ahmed5, it doesn't matter whether it's a memory card or not. As long as it's an external storage device, the same method that @Cycovision suggested should work. Make sure you select the correct drive though. If it shows up under disk-management, at least it means it's being detected. I once encountered a device that didn't even show up under disk-management. That was a big headache to say the least.

download the "gparted boot disk" from here: http://gparted-livecd.tuxfamily.org/download.php

burn it on a cd, reboot your computer onto the cd, then once the system has booted, select your drive from the top right selection. Now you can remove the partition, and create a new one as you like, or multiple.
