like many of you, I've seen and read through a lot of threads where people ask to compare which phone is better, why it's better and so forth. some make their decisions using the threads, some don't. but my point is, why not we start a half-yearly unnoficial phone awards thing on Esato, based on user polls? this would be good for the casual browser who wants some opinion on phones to get, or could even be used by SE themselves to see what they're doing (and not doing) right. it's just a start, but these award things exist for a lot more reasons and the one reason I would like for them to exist is to see what Esato users prefer, and the above stated reasons. after all, how wrong can hundreds of users be, get my point?
we could start the awards right now, as a thread where users poll their opinion and a dedicated user, maybe a moderator or the thread initiator compile the polls at the end of every week. this could go on until maybe the end of June, since it's a half-yearly thing. after that, the post gets locked and maybe placed as a 'sticky' for the remaining of the year. we could even have a separate thread for discussions, a sort of massive 'this against that and why' thread.
I could nominate a few categories, namely:
best budget/entry-level handset - as suggested by Sammy Boy.
best multimedia phone - for phones with multimedia features that differentiates them from generic phones. i.e. SE W Series, K Series, Nokia N Series, and any other phones with good multimedia capabilities.
best business phone - for phones targeted towards the corporate audience. i.e. SE P Series, Nokia E Series, phones that looks and acts the business.
best smartphone - for PDA phones, phones with WM, Symbian, and so forth. this can be phones both used for business and multimedia phones.
best overall phone - an individual poll, crossing across ALL categories. for the best phone released during the recent half-year.
the Esato 'enduring classic' handset award - for the best phones of all time.
others
best feature introduced in a phone - this can be old or new features, whichever is the most innovative feature?
most popular models by manufacturer - as stated. the most popular models as collated through the poll, by the top 5 manufacturer which are Nokia, SE, Motorola, Samsung, LG.

in hindsight, I think a thread as such would be useful too in that it would gather opinions in a single place and in a conclusive manner (the democracy wins). it could also eliminate those comparison threads which goes on and on without a definitive meaning in the end. this doesn't mean that I don't like individual 'this phone vs that phone threads'. it's still very much encouraged but I think a general thread like this would be good for all.

anyways I think it's that time of year again and instead of having it once a year, we can have it once ever half-yearly since we all know how fast the industry is moving at. and I do hope that this sort of thing would be moderator sanctioned and sort of 'official' in a way. hope you know what I mean.

yeah, but this would be covering ALL manufacturers. I do notice that there are more and more fans of other brands coming in these days and this would only be right for everyone. this gives me another idea for categories, what about 'best overall manufacturer'?
just had a look, and the Esato Awards was actually an awards for Esato members, not phones. great idea though, can't wait for the 2007 edition

I was thinking maybe each one could choose 2 phones for each category, and we would have a top 3 or top 5 for each. not sure though, what do you guys think would be best? also, we could have a detailed result published after the event, with all the statistics included (numbers of voters, percentage voted for phone, ect.).

I see your point. actually I do prefer for it to be in the original format, as I think it can be useful as a reference point for phone buyers looking for specific types of phones, or maybe to settle a discussion about which phone doing what is best
? however, we can collate the results from the main poll and form a secondary poll based on your suggestion? I wouldn't be suprised if some manufacturers don't make it into the awards, though.

i can imagine an extra vote for smartfones yet within the different brands. this could be continualy displayed on the easto home page, maybe refrehed every week, so newcomers could vote too. but sy should coordenate it to avoid doubleposting and manage it.

but if we limited the voting to SE phones, wouldn't it get boring after a bit? after all, look how many people are moaning at SE's 'lack of innovation' over the past year? I'd rather have a complete view of the market, then vote for some phone I don't have any real feelings towards.

If we broke it down into categories, it'd be easy just to plug everything into an excel spreadsheet and splew out the results. I do like the idea though, although I think you would have to use categories like the ones on bodums first post, otherwise like every other comparison thread it would just end up in a mass brawl with no real point nor ending.
Keep it simple > have maybe 6 or 7 categories, then two votes each for each category, add up all the numbers and stick them into some tables and graphs. (Although in the major catrgories, maybe a sub-vote might be best to reduce it to a final multiple choice, otherwise ther'll be far too many entrants). Then like bodum said each major manufacturer has a category.

. I was hoping for more support from the moderators though, since I could see a situation where some people would post randomly, double post, and so forth. then a chosen moderator could move posts or delete them.

Best Multimedia should really be a phone that is capable of doing all types of media (music, camera, video, streaming etc) well in all aspects, hence the name MULTImedia, rather than solomedia for example.
W900i comes pretty close for that one really.

maybe we could see about having just a simple web page on the esato server that is updated and people put their votes into that using some sort of online interface, then a mass brawl thread (or even a seperate forum) for people to discuss the outcomes
that way it would be much easier to manage the votes, and there would be less chance of votes being input incorrectly or people double-voting.
It probably would take a reasonably long time to put together though. Maybe some time after my exams i might experiment with some options for it? Unless someone else wants to or has a better idea. I think with a seperate web page for it the stress on the forum would be massively reduced, which could be one of the things admins might be worried about?

the main page does have a poll thingie, but I don't really see it as being an active part of the site. what makes Esato what it is, is right here. it's the forum, that's what most people come for. and I would think that a poll right here in the form of a thread would serve the purpose well. you were saying about 'stress' on the forum? I'm sorry, but I'm not quite well-versed with how forums are run, care to explain on that one?
and for a poll to succeed, we do need the help of one or two moderators, plus some senior members. anyone else think this is a good idea?

by stress on the forum i meant a lot of people accessing the same thread all at once, as im sure it would attract a lot of attention from off the forum too
i didnt mean make it indipendant of the forum, i just thought that instead of manually having to update posts, and people having to post their votes, it would be easier to have an automated system, and would keep the forum free for discussion regarding the results
