Decorating my bedroom

Hello people!

I have decided to decorate my bedroom this summer and was just wanting a few opinions etc etc. I haven't decided on a colour but i want something neutral. The only thing i have decided is that i am going to have this magnetic photoboard as a focal point.

Now my question is should i just have the one or maybe two or three? My bedroom is really small so maybe i am best with just one. Also i have persuaded my Grandad to let me have laminate flooring, at last. Is it easy to put down?

I am also wondering how hard it is to paint directly onto a wall rather than use lining paper. Is it just a case of filling in any gaps with filler and then sanding the walls? Just looking for colour advice mostly. Hopefully you lot can help me out.

Thanks!

PINK!

no really.. a soft pastel pink or green...

as for flooring depends on what one you get... you can get like click in ones that are dead easy if you have a square room if not it gets a little harder as you need to chop bits off etc but your not stupid so I'm sure you will figure it out..

as for paint, if i remember at the mo your walls are white/cream? you may just be able to paint over them with ya chosen colour (but I'm no builder) , filling gaps in? you reckon you can plaster?

hats off if you can...

Posted by haynesycop
Well not plastering as such i just mean filling in holes with polyfiller or whatever it is called and giving it a little sand. I don't want to use lining paper because you'll be able to see it when it has been painted over.

I have green wallpaper at the moment with a green & blue border which i hate so i don't really want green, maybe something like a cream or pale beige, not too sure really.

I can always get my uncle in to do the flooring for cheap, the clicking it in seems easy enough but cutting it to fit will be difficult. I know you have to leave a couple of mm gap around the edge so the wood can expand & contract in heat.

You could ask your local friendly joiner for a bit of help!

shows how much attention i paid to pics of your room then... green/white!? yeah i see the correlation!!

if you pull the wall paper off you will need to do something as you know behind it won't be pure nice white flat walls....

the flooring is supposed to be easyish to do so i'm sure you can figure it out...

@nanu*1

Thanks very much for the offer that is really kind, i think Warrington is abit further than 30 minutes, i'm sure it will be fine though, not going to do it until July time anyway.

I know the walls won't be completely flat but do you think i could get away without using lining paper, don't want those nasty lines people can see when the paint is on top.

Thanks!

dependent on what colour your going to use you might get away with it but I'll make you no promises.. a lil test patch is the key... nip out to Block and Quail and get lots of tester pots of colours you like, whack em in ya wee test patch and see what you think.. (they never ever look the same as the pot!)

ooor.. you could be really clever and do a wee pattern with the paint then you really wouldn't see the lining paper lines.. you'd never have had so much fun with JS bags in all your life! although not sure if carrier bagging walls is a little out of date as such?

Posted by haynesycop
Why on earth would i want orange JS bags all over my wall with try something new today written all over them! You are a strange man.

That is a grand idea about the tester pots there only a few quid each so i'll get some today and see what i like.

My Mum is a moose saying laminate is out of fashion. It is better than carpet if you spill osmething you just wipe it away.

Posted by fatreg
noooo... you don't put the bags on the wall my dear.. you use them like sponges.. paint a bit of the wall and bag it.. crumple the bag up in ya hand and dab it on the wall and look what it does! it's magic...

as for laminate flooring i hate it, too cold on your feet in the middle of the night, but I'm an old man! really pi$$ em off and tile it... proper floor tiles are to die for.. . oooooooh slate.. hmmmm... (although think mr student loan won't love you no more)

maybe not tiles, but hell it's your room.. surely you can do what cha want in it as such?

this would be soo much easier if you were on msn or iChat......

msn is a microsoft program and i'm not ruining my mac with that tripe lol. Oh i get you i'm so dense sometimes, that is rather a good idea. As for cold feet, do you know what socks are?

Posted by fatreg
socks? yeah you wear them with sandles hehe...

you don't have to use JS bags. sponges are also good but I prefer the bags...

and of course it's a good idea.. I'm (my name)...

as for msn..hmmm ichat!? that's not microsh!t...

If the lining paper is done right it is hard to see the lines, or you coud get a textured paper which you paint over, obviously there are far more modern textured papers than "woodchip" and they can hide a multitude of sin's!!

30 mins in My TDI Transporter is do able i get to St Asaph in 45mins!

Posted by fatreg
woodchip is the way forward nanu.. relive the 80s

ahhh TDI transporter.. god bless VW..

off topic oops...

i wanna move house so i can decorate.....

Posted by haynesycop
Yeah your right, lining paper is probably best will have a look later at B&Q and see what i can find. 45 mins is rather good, i'm off the M53 if you know that but i think i will have a go myself, more sense of achievement then unless it does drastically wrong lol.

Posted by fatreg
always handy to have back up

a wee friend you can rely on...

you're gonna have fun in Q and B later i see!

Posted by Nanu
Ah Boris Quiqleys you know there was a spate of burglaries there not so long back, a spokesman for B&Q stated "we have always charged these prices!"

Yeah i have an idea where you are i have worked all over, Ellesmere Port etc

Posted by fatreg
It's B and Q from the people Block and Quail ain't it??

they be Mr B and Q?

Posted by Nanu
Your 100% correct AFAIK, i just like to tell people it belongs to Boris Quiqley and they believe me!

Posted by fatreg
hehe..

god bless impressionable people!

Posted by Nanu
i wanna move house so i can decorate.....

Why move to decorate?

Posted by fatreg
because my landlord won't let me decorate!

Posted by Nanu
Ah right! Same here, all the wall's have like a woven textured paper and are painted white, it's ok but not perhaps my first choice!

Posted by fatreg
yeah same here...

not brill but it'll do for the time being..

Ok so i am decided on paint colour:

It is called cookie dough, so if it is named after an ice cream it is good enough for me.

Posted by Nanu
Does it taste like it though..................?

Posted by haynesycop
Not by the smell of it, not that i would like to try lol. Just found a picture of somebody who used it, looks alot better on the wall.

Posted by Nanu
Not bad but i much prefer the look of this dough!

Posted by haynesycop
Mmmm mmmm! Don't make me hungry. I saw some laminate today too only £12 per pack. Thought that was quite reasonable.

Nanu do you have to put anything under it beforehand like lining etc etc? I have no idea.

Posted by Nanu
yeah there are two types of underlay there is a foam type that comes on a roll and is about 3-4mm thick, which is fine for wooden floors that are reasonably even, then there is a thicker fibreboard underlay which comes in boards this can be up to 12mm thick and is better suited to uneven wooden floors or concrete floors, if you do have concrete floors you may need to put down a damp proof membrane first ie Visqueen or use foil backed fibreboards! all should be available at Boris Quiqley's.

Posted by haynesycop
Hmmmm ok i think it is concrete can't be sure though. Hope that isn't to expensive.

My room is only very small though i just measured it in inches with a tape measure and it is:

85 inches = 2.15900 meters

So on the basis of that how many packs of laminate do you think i will need. I think about 2-3 maybe?

Posted by Nanu
hang on!

Your room measures width? X Length? = ?M2

then how many M2/pack?

your room xM2 divided by xm2/pack = number of packs!

Posted by haynesycop
I haven't done any calculations yet. Each side of the wall is 85 inches long.

Posted by Nanu
Any idea about pack size?

Posted by haynesycop
I can't actually remember to be honest. I vaguely remember the pack had a guide on it saying if you had 2m width by 2m length you would need 3 packs etc etc. If that makes any sense.

Posted by Nanu
if what you say is correct!

Your room is 4.66m2 then add 10% for wastage 5.14m2

2mx2m=4m2 divided by 3 would mean each pack was 1.33m2

therefore on that basis 5.14m2 divided by 1.3m2 = 4 packs!

Posted by haynesycop
I'm so glad you worked that out!

Nice one i thought around £40-£50 so that is bang on really. Hopefully they will have some left when i get paid.

Posted by Nanu
Don't forget to check the pack size first though just in case!

Posted by haynesycop
Yeah lol i should have written it down i can always go back next week. Unfortunately they don't have it online. May see what they got online elsewhere.

Thanks for that!

Try here if you see anything you like let me know and I'll let you know the trade price incl.del!

Posted by haynesycop
Nice one thanks for that, your a doll. I am after beech colour i think. Just something that will complement the colour i'm going to use really. I think it is best to get flooring first and then try and get a desk and draws to match the floor.

What about these ones:
