Steve Jobs wrote a letter divulging Apple's past progress and future plans for becoming more eco-friendly in the company's operations:

The topic of Mercury and Arsenic hinted at a new iMac coming out this year, methinks:

To eliminate mercury in our displays, we need to transition from fluorescent lamps to light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to illuminate the displays. Fortunately, all iPod displays already use LEDs for illumination, and therefore contain no mercury. We plan to introduce our first Macs with LED backlight technology in 2007. Our ability to completely eliminate fluorescent lamps in all of our displays depends on how fast the LCD industry can transition to LED backlighting for larger displays.

what they gonna make the imac out of!?!?

Yeah, I read the whole article. Interesting how Jobs pointed out that Apple never announces its future plans, but in this case, he made an exception

As for PVC, I know nothing of industrial materials, but Apple has clearly found some Earth-friendly alternative. Or maybe the new iMac will be all aluminum, like the Mac Pro

Ikea do bio-degradeable carrier bags so maybe the new material Apple wants to use is something along those lines...
