P990i Media Player - Some music not showing up

Hi all, I have the latest firmware and this problem has been there since my original Orange firmware.

I transfer music to my phone (using Disc2Phone) and onto my 2GB Memory stick. I let Music Player do a full automatic update and there's always some albums that just don't show up. For example, both my Arctic Monkey's albums are completely invisible in the Artist and Album lists but then if I play all my music and shuffle it; tracks from those albums will play...

At first I thought it was the length of the folder name which the phone couldn't handle or something but it's not that because I renamed the folders. I have also tried manually dragging and dropping the original MP3 files into the music folder but this still hasn't helped.

Has anyone else had this problem and found a way round it?

Are the artist & album names visible in the track list of D2P ?

I seriously doubt that this info is present in the ID3 tags of your files..

To be more specific, most PC players can guess the Song title and artist etc from the file name, the P990 can't. Instead it uses what almost all PC player apps use primarily, the ID3 tag, song info stored inside the file itself.

If you are sure you have ID3 tags on the missing music, I'd suggest a full rescan (found under Settings > Preferences > Files in the media player). You will also have to do a full rescan after updating the tags in the "missing" files, since a normal update won't register changes to ID3 tags.

Hi, thanks for both your suggestions.

Yes the files are visible in D2P that's what I can't understand!

I've checked the files and the first album are WMA and the 2nd album are MP3 so I know it's not a WMA problem. Both sets of tracks have information when I right-click the file(s), go to properties and then "Details" so I presume the ID3 is ok......the fact they will come up with all the track and album details (even the picture!) when shuffling all music just makes it even weirder!

I have re-scanned numerous times to no avail. It's not just this one artist either, it's a few it's happening with.

Are u able to view the tracks under 'Unknown' when selecting 'Artists' or 'Albums' ?

Okay, I had this same problem with not being able to see certain songs but in my playlists. The fix for me was to delete all my playlists and recreate them, but this time selecting to save the playlist to the memory card(same as the location of the songs) since I did that I have had no problems. Not sure if this changes what appears in the album and artist folder because I never checked, but just throwing things out there for you to try.

Ahhhhhhh! Yes The tracks are showing up under "Unknown" and then "Unknown" again.... so I take it that it must be a tag on the file which isn't being read properly or something?

It's weird though because they were put on with D2P...

Thanks for your reply drums8183, I don't actually use playlists so I know it wouldn't have been that..

Is there a way I can manually add information to the files to get them to show up?

I use mp3tag to edit tag information. It's a nifty little freeware tool that writes tags to other formats as well.

Of course you have to edit the tags before you transfer them to the phone.I don't think there is any way of doing it in situ.

I rather believe that these tracks do not have any ID3 tags, as the P990 actually reads them very well...

And using D2P does not mean that your tracks are tagged, as you can use it for the transfer of both, tagged & non-tagged tracks..

U may use an editor app for that, as suggested by carnivalist, but you can also edit the tags in winamp's playlist (right-click > view file info).
