I have Sony branded 1GB M2 for my k800 but need a 2gb one now.

I cant seem to find any Sony branded 2GB ones only sandisk ones. Are they as good?

Ive heard not as good quality wise?

Any help would be much appreciated.

they develope these memory carsds together.... so yes, your safe buying sandisk....

Posted by masseur
I've been using a couple of Sandisk 2gb M2, filled to capacity, since they came out and have had no issues

Posted by Coxy
I too use a 2GB Sandisk in my W880. No faults what so ever. Very good, no reason to spend extra on a Sony.

Posted by rockerZ
I am using a Sandisk 1GB Card in My K750i and it works perfectly fine , they have probably made them together and probably have the same data inside just like the Sony ones.

se buys cards from sandisk too, they put just theis label on it...

Posted by Horonaim
Also using a Sandisk 1Gb M2. No problems too...

Yeah Sandisk probably is Sony's OEM as I am not sure Sony can make flash memory in house. Don't forget Sandisk is one of the creator of flash memory. It annoys me to hear someone doubt genuine Sandisk memory (especially the extreme series one).

You need to find genuine one though as there are many fake Ultra/Extreme series sandisk. However the Sandisk M2 is still the mainstream quality one (no Ultra/Extreme).

no problem with sandisk memory cards, i've been using a 1gb sandisk since last year and no problems with it.

Posted by phoenyx
I'm also using a 1gb sandisk on my k800 and no problem so far

Thanks all

It's NOT an M2 though . . . but with the MSPD, I rely msotly on the performance of the Sandisk brand, than that of Sony . . . as I am seeing LOTS of fake Sony cards at my end too, none so far with Sandisk

The W950i's internal memory is actually a sandisk 4gb flash!! need i say more?

I installed a Sandisk 2GB M2 on my K800i yesterday, and it seems to work fine.
First, I backed up everything on my Sony 1GM M2 to my computer using the USB cable, it took about 15-20 minutes, then I instaleld the 2 GB card, and copied everything back from the computer, which also took about 15-20 minutes, maybe a little bit longer, since write access is slower than read access on flash memories. I also thrwe in some more mp3's and pictures on the new card, and I still have plenty of space left. I think 2GB is the maximum limit that K800i can handle.

Posted by hanugro
Well I think it may handle at least 4GB. Just no M2 card of that capacity yet.

Quote from K800 white paper:

Memory Stick Micro™ (M2™) slot

There is support for Memory Stick Micro™ (M2™) of up to 2 GB. Different kinds of content (pictures, audio, video clips etc.) can be stored on the Memory Stick Micro™ (M2™), and transferred to other Memory Stick Micro™ (M2™) – compatible consumer products, for example Sony digital cameras, camcorders, portable music players, TVs, photo printers and computers.

Update:
Just for curiosity, since I thought that the 2GB limit might be firmware or hardware dependant, I checked the white paper for K810. In there, they state that Memory Stick Micro™ (M2™) slot supports up to 1 GB memory cards. That's truly an argument for keeping the K800i and not upgrading to K810...

k810 supports only 1 gb memory? now this is crap

Sandisk had the 2GB before sony did they both make the same cards. Just deliver at different times. Its all down to preference, with the cards.

Sandisk were the !st to use Flash memory. I think it was intel or ibm who didnt see any use for it so the creator got to take the rights to it many years ago.

Posted by drgopoos
Sandisk is any day better than sony ones in terms of quality , performance and cost.
i had used both of them and found that sony does not stand any where.

i am using a 4gb ultra II for my p990i and its works great..

the only problem is getting a genuine one.. but from an authorised dealer.
more than 90% of sandisk cards in the market are fake ones. Its very hard to make them out. For sony too you might find plenty of fake ones...

No, it's true, or there is a typing error in 's white paper. It cannot be that they did not write bigger than 1GB since there were no bigger M2 cards available by the time the paper was written, since the white paper for K800i is much older, and that one says 2 GB.

There is a tiny possibility that the addressing space could be increased by a firmware or EROM upgrade, but the limit may as well be in the hardware.

Anyone with a K810 that has tested a Sandisk 2GB M2 yet? It does work on my K800.

Posted by msmmsm
I remember reading somewhere that the Sony ones are just a branded version of the Sandisk, yet I also remember that a speed test was done, Sony vs Sandisk, with the outcome favourablle for the Sandisk. Odd.

When are the 2GB Sony M2's going to be available in the UK?

Posted by >500
k810i will take more than 1gb. the white paper was probably written before 2gb was released, so the limit was set to what ever was out at the time, 1gb.... or its just an error. if the k800 takes more than 1gb, the k810 will definately

http://www.sonyericsson.com/s[....]=pip2&zone=pp&pid=10407&tid=14

Read here, stated clearly K800 support up to 1GB as well. The reason for that is that Sony has only 1GB of M2 to sell. I am pretty confidence SE phone can take at least up to 4GB M2. That is the limit of 32bit and as others said that even FAT32 can support more (but 1 file may only up to 4GB).

For MSDPs (full-size, not Micro), someone on Esato posted a speed test comparison between Sony-branded (standard and high-speed) and Sandisk-branded (also standard and high-speed) . IIRC, the standard Sandisk was actually faster than the Sony high-speed

I suspect the same is the case for Micros?

Anyway, it goes to show that Sandisk is actually better!

Well, 1 GB for K800i is definitely incorrect information, since I use a 2GB card on my K800i, and it works. Also, I believe that the white paper, that is supposed to be the technical spoecification for developers and others, is a more reliable source of information than what comes from the sales department. In the WP, it says 2GB, and it was written long before Sony even released the 1GB card. The fact that the WP for K810 has to be written after the WP for K800, and that one says only 1GB must also have a meaning.

K800i White paper, dated March 16, 2006, see page 6
K810i White paper, dated February 19, 2007, see page 6

However, I truly hope that both limit statements are incorrect, and that both handsets will be able to handle even bigger memory cards than 2 GB, should they arrive to the market. Anyone that knows what the limit for the M2 format is? 32 GB perhaps?

Found it on http://www.memorystick.org/eng/aboutms/micro.html:
Maximum Capacity is 32 GB for the memory stick itself. It will be interesting to see when such a memory comes around.

BTW, the Sony/Sandisk Press Release from 2005 pretty much summarizes and finalizes this discussion:

SANDISK AND SONY DEVELOP “MEMORY STICK MICRO” (M2) FORMAT
Ultra-small IC recording media for mobile phones

SanDisk Corporation and Sony Corporation today announced the development of the “Memory Stick Micro” format, an ultra-small IC recording media designed to meet the growing storage needs of highly compact, multifunctional mobile phones. Licensing for the development of “Memory Stick Micro” compatible hardware will begin October 3, 2005.

This press release also informs about the maximum capacity.

You guys are misinformed.

Sony does NOT have and does not have the capability to make 2GB.

SanDisk builds their own Memory Stick products including M2 and does not buy Memory Stick from Sony.

SanDisk owns the 2GB M2 market and just announced the 4GB capacity point and will own that market as well.

The SanDisk product is as high or higher quality as the Sony product and is tested to meet the exact specification.

You should read carefully. Many people in this thread say that Sony may buy from Sandisk (NOT the other way around). So they agree with you.

And yes I don't think Sony has capability to make it own memory (in any capacity and in any format). I might be wrong on this but why create a product line if you can order from OEM and put your label on it cheaply?

I standardised my flash memory to Sandisk and Lexar.

If sony make their own memory why use sandisk for there 4gb flash memory in the w950i?

Posted by below24
Sony and sony ericsson arent the same thing.

Sandisk make INAND memory found in most mobiles...

Yes i appreciate that sony and aren't the same, but it is sony ericsson not sandisk ericsson so you would think they would favour sony flash memory as oppose to sandisk unless of course sandisk make the memory stick for sony

Posted by altemyr
Could it be a somewhat dishonest retailer that has replaced the Sony M2 with a Sandisk M2 in the phone, and then sold the Sony M2 separately, since they have a somewhat higher price than the Sandisk M2s?

Posted by Nanu
Nice theory, but definitely not the case with the W950i as the flash memory is embedded! and is definitely sandisk i've seen it

Trust me. The genuine SanDisk is the best choice. Just got one last week, of course, the original one with warranty from SanDisk Indonesia and it runs flawlessly on the phone. Beware of fake SanDisk and Sony M2.

NOTE: Sony does not make a 2GB M2 - only SanDisk. A 2GB Sony M2 would be a fake.

The quality level of both Sony and SanDisk are very high and they meet the same standards. That said, you would probably buy a SanDisk, since they are more cost effective.
