Orange was originally approached by Channel 4 to sponsor the show after Carphone Warehouse ended its £3m sponsorship deal in the wake of alleged racism on the show.
Orange said it had consulted its 12,000 staff and found the majority who responded were against signing a sponsorship deal.
'We asked our staff what they thought about sponsoring Big Brother as we like to get them involved in the decisions their company makes. In this case, the majority of our staff felt that we shouldn't sponsor Big Brother. Having taken this into consideration and having evaluated it further with our sponsorship team, we have declined this opportunity,' said an Orange spokesman.
Virgin Media could sponsor Channel 4 reality show Big Brother this summer in a bid to push its new brand. But whether the company would be prepared to pay the £3m asked of Carphone Warehouse and Orange for the deal remains to be seen.
A spokesperson for Virgin Media, said: 'We are always in discussions with third parties regarding mutually beneficial partnerships. We never comment on who these discussions are with, or the stage at which they are at, as the majority are merely exploratory conversations. A number come to fruition and, as and when they do, we announce them.

Well done Orange for their choice.

I agree, having worked for Both Orange and Virgin it was good of Orange to consult its staff over this sponsorship deal.
However i would be very dissapointed with Richard Branson if he went ahead with Virgin sponsoring big brother.

Richard should know better.

Orange made the right decision. Stupid idea by Virgin Media, might even lose them customers, if Channel 4 wants to keep BB running they should sponsor it themselves.

Virgin Media is the new sponsor of Big Brother, it has been confirmed.
The company has signed an exclusive deal with Channel 4 to sponsor the eighth series this summer and will have first refusal on the next Celebrity Big Brother.
"We're a pioneering and innovative company so it made sense to create an alliance with a show that has genuinely changed the face of TV," said James Kydd, Virgin Media's managing director of marketing.
Carphone Warehouse pulled out of its £3 million sponsorship deal following the Celebrity Big Brother race row.
Kydd said: "Big Brother has always come under the spotlight and courted a lot of attention.
"Virgin is known for facing challenges head on and we know that our customers enjoy Big Brother because it's the most unpredictable and exciting TV programme there is."
The Virgin Mobile brand will be at the heart of the sponsorship deal.
Channel 4's head of sponsorship, David Charlesworth, said: "We share so much with Virgin in both brand and business so look forward to pooling our expertise to create a ground-breaking sponsorship."

i think they have, well done to Orange and CPW.

I've now lost respect for Virgin....expected better from Richard Branson.
Orange and CPW made the right decision, why Virgin decided to do this remains to be seen?

channel 4 cannot be accountable for what was said...
they can have a moral grounding but no accountability.
as they say "any publicty is good publicity" so im sure mr branson has done his sums properly..
oh and £3m to branson? not great deal is it?

Talking about Big Brother, I think it would be great if Omid Djalili was in it... such a good comedian.

I have recently joined Orange and would have been ashamed if they went ahead with it. Well done to the fruity network Orange. I think that BB has had its day and i never watched it from the first show you always get dim wits on it with no brains or talent and people i would not call celebrities. I wanna be entertained on tv not watch thick b*****ds sitting in a house doing nothing. Anyway rant over.

Why is this a bad thing? and why have you guys lost respect for Virgin Media?
What we all saw wasn't the Big Brother programme being racist, it was some of the contestants.
So why should the programme be classed as racist in some of your eyes?

exactly super..
finally someone that agrees with me.
there are sane people in this world!

Orange had the sense to seek advice from its staff about this, they obviously understood it was a serious enough issue and made the right decision....i've personally lost respect for Virgin because i thought they would have picked up on the fact the CPW pulled out and Orange decided not to take there place.
Big Brother is as much responsible for the racism as the contestants because they let it happen without taking any sort of action, they were milking it for as long as they could.
Channel 4 should have pulled the plug on BB when this happened, by not taking the appropriate action they are sending out the message that its ok to be racist on a Channel that was intially made to cater for ethnic minoritys.

whoa whoa here!
so becasue racism gets mentioned CH4 should pull a programme?
we live in 2007, people will and can express their views and beliefs/feelings and who are we to stop them?
and before you jump the gun, NO i do not condone racism but i do however feel it is a part of life and as such we should be more than ready to see it on TV, as i've said yes CH4 have a moral responsibilty but that's as far as it goes.
and for the record, no i don't think racism is right but it's grained within 300 years of Englsh heritage and you are not going to get people to stop thinking what they think.
while i feel sorry for the narrow minded people that don't see that racism is a bad thing, I do see that it's important to stick to your beliefs and heritage.

My personal opinion is that the programme should have been pulled yes, you have to remember that kids watch this stuff, by letting 3 white english girls make racist remarks towards a Indian lady on national TV and not taking any action is sending out the wrong message that its fine to be like this, although it might be ok for adults to watch this kind of stuff but children have impressionable minds and not knowing any better would think, oh that must be ok to do this because they are showing it on TV.
We live in 2007 yes, and in the multi cultural Britain we live in today this sort of stuff should not be tolerated at all....fare enough in the outside world racism is quite common and a reality, but if they had to show this on TV the least Channel 4 could of done was take action and punish the people involved.
you can't let racism go on because it in our heritage, there are no excuses if someone chooses be racist then that person should be given the appropriate punishment....its time a example is made of such people!

correct me if i'm wrong here but BB is/was on at either 9pm or 10pm?
watershed is 9pm..
no kids!
yeah i know there shouldn't be racist people in "multicultural" Britain but there are and there's not a lot we can do to stop them im afraid, well other than offering them a free train ticket to France!
fatreg
Posted by axxxr
so your telling me that kids don't watch TV past the watershed? ...its funny because every kid i've come across watches BB.
BB has become such a huge phenomenon that every kid, even if they can't watch it because of the watershed, im sure they will be downloading clips of it from youtube or even having it streamed straight to there phones.
anyway ive said what i had to say...rant over!

but they shouldn't be watching it!
just like people aren't supposed to take drugs but they do..
there's not a lot we can do about it!
fatreg
Posted by axxxr
So we can't do anything about it, that makes it acceptable does it?
your right about one thing, maybe we can't erradicate the racism in our society, but the least we can do is to punish those who who we find that do, and make an example of them, just like you would punish any criminal for the crimes he or she commits.
Going back to my original point, BB should have been punished and made an example of so that others can learn from it.
Orange saw sense not to sponsor BB so why did Virgin have to go and do it? the sad thing Virgin has said nothing to explain why they decided to take this step, the virgin Press Release explains nothing.

Calm down dears its just a tv programme. Though i think its not right what happened to Shilpa i really dont care cos the bottom line is Big Brother is rubbish. I dont understand anyone who watches it. Its so awful and cringe worthy watching that show. How people can watch other people sitting in a house acting like idiots with no brains no talent none of them are interesting or funny and its pointless. I mean when they show the live show late at night all they show is everyone sleeping. CALL THAT ENTERTAINMENT. COME OFF IT.
