With the PS3 launching this Friday in the UK I'm just wondering who will be getting one on release day?
I have a funny feeling there wont be a mad rush to the shops to get one, for example Game are still guaranteeing launch day availability, it could be because Sony have got there act together and are sending a large batch but i doubt it.
For me, well I'm waiting for a) any bugs to come out and b) for the price to go down

Well, here it's gooa cost ?665.00 - that's in the same shop an acer notebook plus a w810, e.g. ... Guess I'll wait for gta '4' on xbox 360Which by oct. will be a third of a ps3...
Posted by Xugaa
I'm going to leave it for a bit, my mum said she'd buy me one for my birthday later this year lol. That'll give them time to iron out any bugs as well as time for the most looked forward to games to come out.
I bought my PS2 a while after the launch and it still works perfectly even today, and yes I'm talking about the original "fat" version of the PS2.
But most of my friends have pre-ordered their PS3 and so I guess I'll have to live a life of jelousy for a while...

I'm not doubting you or saying you're lying, but that sounds like another anti-Sony rumour to me... but if it is true I'm sure I'm right when saying that even Nintendo and Microsoft fans will hope this comes to a stop and that those who do do this sort of thing are punished, as in a way we are all affected and all vulnerable to this type of illegal happening.

For anyone waiting for the price to go down....have a nice 5 year wait
They already said they won't be lowering the price for the for seeable future.

I agree mate, I've read somewhere before, during the early days of the ps3, that sony is losing money for every ps3 manufactured, because of the parts(blu-ray drives, etc.).

I doubt they'll lower the price... however it is still the cheapest Blueray player on the market...
Hacked games??? Well makes them cheaper for some, however the reason Sony make a loss on each unit, is because they'll recoupe on the games sales... so hacking the games only means that the unit will be more expensive for longer.
Although I understand that this effects return on R&D, Sony are still worth a shit load... (Share price risen from $40 - $52 in the last 6 months) So I don't have as much sypathy as I would for a small SWH.

PSP's have been hacked. Go to dl.qj.net and you can get the open source DarkAlex firmware, let's you play downloaded PSP games and use emulators for downloaded PS1/2 games and even othe formats like SNES.

Technically, the PS3 still can't play the pirated games and so not fully 'hacked'.
Yes, people can rip off the Blu-ray disc to the HDD by running Linux on their PS3 but no one has come out with a way to play them. Apparently a TIFF Exploit does exist. At the moment an ISO Loader is still in development but it won't be released publicly until after the Europe Release date (This Friday).
So - to some up, NO YOU CAN'T PLAY BACKUPS yet but you can rip them.
If I were to buy a PS3 I definitely won't modify it's s/w like I did my PSP. My PSP still plays great and is in excellent condition, but I wouldn't like a £425 investment getting bricked. Also, I don't think it's fair to release and ISO loader for the PS3 as it's a great product and I wouldn't like to see Sony fail again like the PSP.
Hope that helps

dont worry about it getting bricked coz i wait a bit for some gud devolement on the hacks before i do it

I presume you mean development........ The spelling of the youth today......
To be honest i would'nt care if the hacks went through 5 years of developments, i would no way mod a £400 + piece of equipment knowing that theres still a possibility of it becoming the first Sony doorstop

I know exactly what you mean mate
@ djtwistter True say man, but just imagine this: Updating to a custom firmware and then you have a power cut/power lead 'comes' out...I know it seems really unlikely, but it can happen (Of course it could also happen when updating the normal way...I hope Sony do something to prevent it). I just want to keep my PS3 up-to-date and clean

Found this; 'PS3 withstands hack challenge'...
Liz Tay, PC World
19/03/2007 14:49:21
There was only one winner of an international challenge that offered a PlayStation 3 to any hacker able to attack it: Sony. Over the two-month-long competition, the PlayStation 3 was able to withstand numerous attempts by hackers worldwide, proving to the competition organiser its potential use as a server.
The challenge was first issued in November 2007 by Japanese Web host Shimpinomori to test the security of the PlayStation 3 Open Platform and the viability of using it as a heavy-duty server platform. Results came as a pleasant surprise to Shimpinomori founder, Augustin Vidovic.
"I was half expecting that someone would find a crack in the Linux setup, and it did not happen," he said. "Nobody could hack into the PS3."
And it wasn't for lack of trying. Standard hack attempts have left Vidovic with more than one gigabyte of logs full of what he calls 'unimaginative' attempts on the HTTP. Other hackers attempted brute force attacks on the SSH port.
According to Vidovic, the most notable hack attempt exploited a limitation in the number of simultaneous SSH connections that could be supported on the PS3, in order to prevent other challenge participants to connect to the SSH for a few hours.
The challenge was called to a halt on 2 January 2007 with the PS3 emerging unscathed. Vidovic said this proved the PS3's abilities to run continuously for extended periods of time without any heat problems, and can be trusted to be a good, reliable and secure server.
Vidovic now owns three PS3 machines, one of which will be used as a server, the second as an experiment development platform for the Cell processor, and the third as a game console. He is currently also researching applications and methods to set up a PS3 as a server.

Man us uk ppl really get ripped off. I live in usa now but i'm from birmingham. The playstation 3 here is 600 something dollars. You lot it the uk almost pay double that. Its a joke. I thought 600 dollars was a lot!
Posted by Burgaz
It's not really double. More like 100 dollars more...
Posted by DonJuan
oh i thought someone said it was 700 pounds
Posted by Burgaz
Nah! £425... Still a bit far out if you ask me!
Posted by Xugaa
Approximately...
USA Cost - $600 = £307
UK Cost - £425 = $832
Sony Production Cost Per Console - $800 = £409
It would seem that Sony are collecting their production to sale losses from the USA and Japan through Europe.

I have mine coming on Friday from Amazon
As for the cost....
well lets consider it:
(and before the usual fanboy nonsense begins, I will state that I also bought a 360 on release day so I haven't just dismissed it without thought)
Firstly it is the cheapest Blu-Ray player on the market and according to T3 magazine it also performs better than the Samsung stand alone player with faster loading times and better picture quality.
Already some value there then.
Oh and what else is squeezed in there too? Ah yes, THE most advanced console in the world!
I admit that the current batch of games aren't much different to the 360 but since when did the first lot of games take full advantage of ANY console, I read that developers can are only making use of 40% of the systems abilities so far.
Edit- actually only 20% so far....according to the Vice President of EA SEE HERE
As for the 360 price....the full system costs £280 then you need to buy the HD-DVD drive (£130) and the WiFi adapter (£60) to make it have the same abilities as the PS3 taking the total cost to £470....more than the PS3 and still not as good.
Not as good? Why? you ask....
Don't get me wrong I really like the 360 but the PS3 is better for the following reasons:
Firstly I prefer my system to be all in one package not surrounded by add-ons and after thoughts.
Second the 360 cannot play games from the HD discs and so is limited to the comparitively small size of DVDs. As we can already see with several 360 games this makes them short
Third is the HDD, 20GB vs 60GB and also the PS3 HDD can be easily uograded.
The PS3 also has HDMI outputs, sadly missing from the 360.
Then there are headsets, no need to buy a special PS3 headset as it can simply use any bluetooth headset.
Also the six-axis controller is an advantage over the 360. It isn't a copy of the Wii as the anti-Sony propaganda claims but it is put to effective use in smallparts of games such as Resistance Fall of Man where you shake the pad to shake off attacking aliens on tilt it to roll on the floor when on fire
Next is the online service which is free on the PS3 but a paid service on the 360, more additional costs there.
Another bonus is the connectivity with the PSP which can be used to remotely control the PS3 media and menus over Wifi and can also stream music and video to the PSP screen. Also with the new PS3 f/w update released this coming Thu, this will be able to be done from anywhere using a WiFi hotspot.
So while the 360 might seem initailly cheaper I believe it is a false economy in the long run and lets not forget that we haven't seen any where near the full capabilities of the PS3 yet.
I think now it is finally coming out we will see what it actually has to offer, many people seem to have dismissed it as soon as they saw the price without actually looking into it.

I know it has BLue Ray but is that the same as HD?
Posted by arien617
HD DVD and Blu-Ray are different formats, Blu-Ray has higher capacity discs compared to HD DVD but there are rumours of tri-layer HD DVD discs coming soon.

You can't play a HD-DVD in a Bluray player and vice versa.

I can't seem to find that actual article and I can't remember where it was even written but I have found an even more interesting one which actually states an even lower figure of 20%! and that is from the Vice President of Electronic Arts
