Some good news if you're going into hospital, you should be able to take your phone with you and use it - assuming various hospitals lift their ban on it!
A ban on patients and doctors using mobile phones in hospitals in England is to be lifted this spring, the government has announced.
Restrictions have been in place because of concerns phones could interfere with medical equipment.
But an NHS regulator said last year phones could safely be used in some areas away from sensitive equipment.
Announcing the changes, health minister Andy Burnham said there was now "no reason" for an outright ban on mobiles.
The advice published by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said mobile use should be restricted only where specialist equipment was used, as in intensive care and specialist baby units.
But many hospitals still have complete bans.

Where else are mobiles banned. Here in India it is allowed everywhere. Not much health consciousness here, neither ample regulation.

You're also supposed to turn your phone off in garage forecourts as there might be an explosion risk, though I have to admit I keep mine on, though wouldn't accept any calls of course!

I think in both cases (certainly in hospitals) it's people who make the rules and regulations up not knowing enough about the subject and starting 'knee jerk' policies off without there being any concrete basis to them.
I often have my mobile on in hospitals, though on silent, and of course would turn it off in any intensive care wards.

ditto for flights... even Qantas are far more relaxed these days and we can use mobiles till the push back statrs and then again from when the aircraft leaves the runway after landing

Hi all,
Well in most of the Private Hospital's i have been in recently they have already changed this policy quite some time ago now. With the exception of certain wards that use certain equipment you have not had to turn off your phone anymore.

In the Netherlands it's allowed to use mobile phones in most hospitals for several years now, except in the intensive care.
The patients also use theirs.

I hope they become more relaxed now in the UK on the use of mobile phones. If hospitals have any issues on the noise ringtones make, why not allow the use of phones but they must be kept in silent/vibrate mode?
It would be ideal for me if they allow this for browsing Esato to while away the hours!

didnt you see that brainiac episode where they put petrol all over the inside of an old caravan, and put some old mobiles (inc an
t610) in it and rang them and nothing happened to the caravan

Thing is, doing that could block signals to doctor's pagers and possibly affect other equipment I imagine too.
I can't see a problem with people using mobiles on general wards though, as long as they're on silent/vibrate so as not to disturb others too much.

Its been a known fact for yrs that mobile usage outside of ITU/ICU units is fine. I used to suppy nurses and doctors etc to many NHS sites and with having to regularly keep in contact, the only way was through mobile phones....
If they could have them on, so can the patients...
Doctors & Nurses are people not people with a special right
