You get the BES Service Data Plan from your provider - NOT the BES Server. Just to clarify and not cause confusion with the wording here - but I know what you intended to say.

Can anyone overseas (UK/Europe) confirm that the BB Storm sold by Vodafone has the Triband HSPA that the Bold has?! There is a lot of documentation confusion being spread even in the most reliable 3rd party places with regards to this. RIM site states only the 9530 not the 9500.

Thanks.

@MWEB

BES otherwise known as Blackberry Enterprise Server is for Company's to run much like Microsoft Exchange Server whilst mere mortals like us use BIS which is Blackberry Internet Service. This usually costs £10pm per month from all the Networks but when i got my BOLD i took advantage of an Orange offer which means it is only costing me £2.50pm for the length of my contract.

One of the things that had always put me off BB's was this £10pm charge when i could get Seven on my S60 devices for free. Although that was a free Beta it would still of only cost 50% when it ends. But for £2.50 it can live with the expense as it does work so well.

Right, I've been weaned off my Blackberry I think!

I got fed off to high hell with it, really titted me off, so I put my sim in my newly aquired K750i, used it for 2, almost 3 weeks, and finally put it back in the 8310 today. I have to say.....I miss the K750i already :/

Dunno why, I think maybe I'm having one of those phone revalation things, but maybe it's time to go 'back to basics', cause the K750i does everything I want apart from the occasional email and proper voice dialing, oh and the v.occasional GPS, but only cause my incar GPS sucks.

Thing is, 99% of the time, my phone was going off with junkmail, and as much as I add it all to filters, there's always new stuff coming through. I've decided I don't use e-mail enough to actually benefit from it.

I used to use it to read my business emails when I was out, but seeing as most business emails I get can wait at least 24 hours (there's never any hurry, the stuff we do takes days and weeks to plan, not hours) and I'm always near a PC if I need to reply to them (except once, when we were out filming on location, it was a god send then, but ONCE in 7 months is bugger all really).

Can anyone convince me to stay, or will I be listing it on here by next week? Cause I could do with the money

Hi all,

Well despite all the stories of Orange pulling the Bold i spoke to them yesterday to find out what was happening and if they had pulled it would would those of us that had the early ones get them exchanged.

I was speaking with some one that actually knew what they were doing and not just some muppet they also went off and checked the facts for me with a supervisor. Orange know their is a problem with the earlier software and are advising their users how and where to upgrade to newer software. They have NOT pulled the Bold they are sold out as always you can't just believe all you read all the time.

There are so many Bolds out there and most of them once running the later firmwares have very few if any problems. If this story really was true there would be literally thousands of unhappy Bold users and whilst there may be some it isn't everyone.

@Daedalus85

I don't really think anyone can convince you what is best for you only you can know what you want and need from your device. There really isn't one device that is best for all us and seriously doubt there ever will be. But seeing as E-Mail really isn't that important to you and that is a BB's strongest point i wonder why you choose one in the first place.

Personally i wouldn't of got the model you have myself as it lacks 3G/HSDPA and not sure but possibly WiFi also.

I choose the Bold as it has all of the above plus excellent Multimedia currently the best found in a BB and better than most other devices.

It's my first BB and i love it the OS is fast and stable the Music player and sound is the best i have had on any device and replaced my now sold iPod. The screen is stunning for everything from looking at my Pictures to watching Videos or Web surfing. I love the simplicity of use and how great the PIM is along with the choice of 12 different Font styles and 8 sizes. But just because it is currently best for me doesn't mean it has to be for anyone or everyone else.

I chose it because a) I could get one for free, and secondly because I thought the e-mail might be handy from a business perspective. To a lesser extent it was handy, but not enough to warrant keeping it I reckon.

I'd use GPS more than WiFi cause I've got a Nokia 770 with me in my bag at all times which I can use with WiFi networks etc, and because of the way the BB's compress data etc, email especially, I don't notice much of a slow down really.

I had a good time with it, but even after fixing it's speed issues yesterday, I still can't beat a good old simple K750i, because its just works, its reliable, acurate and you dont spend ages trying to select the right thing when you scroll past it by accident with the BB.

Well, i'm heading the other way, with a 8320 arriving Tuesday courtesy of Fatreg.

Hi all,

Well i just stumbled across this very interesting post over @BGR which claims that there are some even better and greater BB devices on the Horizon. One is claimed will have a 5 megapixel AF camera and near HD quality screen and there are already Storm 2 & 3 in the works. You can get better details here

http://www.boygeniusreport.co[....]rks-storm-2-and-3-coming-soon/

I had a feeling late 2008 and 2009 where going to be a really big year for Rim and it looks like i may be right on the money. As it looks like they will have a real iPhone beater that will not only satisfy there usual Business users but appeal to a much wider audience. Personally i think we will see Rim in the No2 spot for smart phones and drawing further ahead of WM, Apple and Google and maybe even closing the gap to Nokia looks like 2009 will be far more interesting than 2008 has been for us gadget lovers.

RIM is a number two player already Dogmann. It overtook Windows around Q2 this year.

Hi EMO6,

I am quite aware of that sorry if you misunderstood or my post wasn't clear as i said

"Personally i think we will see Rim in the No2 spot for smart phones and drawing further ahead of WM, Apple and Google and maybe even closing the gap to Nokia looks like 2009 will be far more interesting than 2008 has been for us gadget lovers."

Not that they would get to the 2nd spot as they are already there but pull closer to Nokia and away from their rivals who people are happily talking up but have a lot to do IMO. Seriously the Bold is my first BB and whilst not perfect as what is? it's really impressed me. They really have addressed their previous weakness and are a serious force to be contended with. I seriously doubt that even when WM7 arrives Q3 2009 it will rival what Rim have to offer. Also by the sound of what Rim are working on and have in store for us Apple better make the iPhone 2 3G really special. As there offerings don't look they will be skimping on any features.

Okay, I see.

Well, looking at those figures it is clear that they (RIM) are eating into Nokia's share. They dropped Nokia from 64% to 57 which is quite a chunk if you ask me.

Good for us the end users that there's so much competition.

Lol, prolly both, but even then, it doesn't have the definete 'click' that buttons, or even a joystick has, meaning if I'm walking along the high street, trying to scroll somewhere, I don't have any precision, no matter what sensitivity the scroll wheels on.

It's a lovely device, and does what it does well when it's working, but I prefer something that's going to just work really well all of the time, something that I can pull out of my pocket, unlock and go, zip bang just like that lol

Plus the camera-slide cover is sooooo handy on my K750i lol

Yes, sorry didnt explain very well. You can get the software for BES free from your service provider providing you take out a large enough business contract with BES enabled accounts on it. You need to provide server hardware with a connection to your exchange server (or Lotus Notes or Novell Groupwise).
I am personally a BES admin at work and BES servers have quite a few more functions than BIS provides.

Right, now a BB owner , nice little 8320 in black, build is v solid, really dinky bearing in mind the qwerty keypad, really loving the trackball, it's a sheer delight to scroll through all the apps on the main screen, and a simple press and scroll into the deeper menu items.
I'm starting to grasp as to why so many of you swear by these things

I had a Curve and went back to Nokia and SE for a while. I have also returned to BB and absolutely love it. The data package costs are much better than they were before i.e. have got 250Mb a month for £2.50 rather than the 6Mb for £8 I had before. I love the push email, the BB pinning and the web browser which is actually useable.
You Nokia/SE people - come over to Blackberry and see what you are missing!! You might even get to talk to Fatreg!
Anyone want to buy an 8320? lol

Just waiting for my BB add-on to be, well... added-on to my tariff at midnight then i'll take a good look at it.

Bit of a jump from the 88xx series I'm used to...

The menu put me off the Curve etc. But this one's stunning.

Hi nicv27,

I was always ld to believe that BB's were weak in respect of Multimedia so avoided for that and other reasons. With the Bold that is most certainly not true my Music in the same 256kbps AAC and using my Shure EC2g ear phones sounds better on the Bold then on any of my previous Nokia's not N95 or N95 8GB was close. In fact the Bold has replaced my now sold iPod and the Bold is just as great as playing Video to.

@Mweb

Welcome to the wonderful world of BB it's certainly grabbed my attention in big way and really continued to impress me to.

Hi!

there is one thing I need to check out, before I too step into the BlackBerry World.

Japanese input! Oh no ! you all scream

Dam ofiaich, with his Japanese input again...

I know, through the help of people here, that Japanese can be displayed.

I am wondering about input. iPod Touch and iPhone Japanese input is easy! Really good fonts too !

With the hardware keyboard, if Japanese is somehow called up, through the menu -> settings... etc. then the vowels will show as

a あ i い u う e え o お

then key presses consonant plus vowel. would give this if we chose K + a vowel.

ka か ki き ku く ke け ko こ

A word such as 'sake' would be type sake → さけ and if the space bar is pressed then → 酒 can be seen.

Could anyone try this for me please?

Maybe head is spinning with my upgrade due shortly....

1. keep TyTn2, and buy iPod Touch 2gen, and c905.

2. Get BlackBerry Storm, because I like virtual keyboards and don't use the TyTn2 keyboard very much. Keep TyTn2 as a backup.

3. get HTC Touch HD because Japanese on Windows Mobile is easy, keep TyTn2 as a backup.

I do admit I like the look of the Storm !

Any help and screen shots appreciated ! I will look up BB help line number now and ring them !

Ofiaich

Hi!

Anyone fancy giving this input a try?

I've had a Bold on "trial" for a while now, it's a nice handset. Nice screen and keyboard but it's slightly bulkier/heavier than the Curve. It's nicely put together, with a nice solid feel.

I also had a play with the Storm today and that's nice too. If you're in the market for a Bold I'd say that it's worth waiting a couple of weeks and taking a look at the Storm.

Posted by ofiaich
Hi dainesefreak !

where did you have a play with the Storm? I heard it is Vodafone only, at least for now.

Ofiaich

Posted by Superluminova
He might have been at the training vodafone have been holding this week.

I myself was supposed to be going but i'm off on holiday. You win some, you lose some i guess.

Posted by Dogmann
Hi all

The Storm is indeed a VodaFone in Europe lifetime exclusive and in the US Verizon lifetime exclusive. But there is apparently a Storm2 with even better specs already in the works and should be launched not to long after the Storm. It really looks like Rim and their Blackberry's are really going to move away from just Business users and hit mainstream by year end and grow as we go into 2009.

We have a large BlackBerry deployment at work and I'm evaluating a further rollout of devices, so I got to play with a few new and furture devices. You're right that the Storm is a Vodafone only exclusive.

RIM have actually said that they want part of the iPhone/general consumer market and they believe that the Storm will give them that. I've got to say that as an Omnia owner the screen on the Storm was, different, good but different and the UI seemed nice and fast.
