K800i not charging problem - possible solutions please?

I've just bought a slightly faulty K800i off Ebay - was feeling a bit rash as feeling a bit depressed and couldn't really afford it - only fault with it apparently is that it doesn't charge.

Anyone had that problem - did you manage to fix it? I'm hoping that it's either dirty contacts on the phone or that the charger the previous owner was using is a bit faulty (I've had a few of them!) I've also bought a desktop charger and spare battery for if nothing works, so I'll then have a perfectly useable K800i for a bargain price!

I haven't recieved it yet, should hopefully have it by the beginning of next week, just planning ahead and getting a few ideas on if this can be fixed or not, and possible avenues to explore.

Bump, there seems to be a few k800is on Ebay with this fault, is it a common problem?

Try changing the battery for a genuine Panasonic.

I bought several batteries off Ebay that wouldn't charge. A genuine Panasonic battery DOES charge.

HTH,

A Panasonic battery in an SE? Didn't realise you could get them!

Hooray! Finally recieved the K800i this morning!

To update things, on inspection there appears to be some moisture damage on some of the Fastport connectors, I've tried to clean them off with at most limited success.

I can plug the handsfree in and it recognises it and will play, though it seems a bit quiet to me. It still won't charge, though if you insert the USB cable and get it in the right place it will connect to the computer... and charge too!

I'm going to have a bit more of a play and see if I can clean the connectors up a bit more, though being careful not to take any of the gold coating off, think I might have been a little too overzelous in places already!

from this it looks like a faulty charger

try going at it with another charger and see what happends

@Sammy boy.

Good for you.

Posted by Sammy_boy
Tried it with a different charger, same result. The charger that came with it is currently working fine charging the spare battery in a desktop charger.

It's probably the damage to the Fastport connector on the phone, especially as other accessories slightly malfunction too.

I'm very impressed with the phone in general, this is the first K800i I've had, great pictures!

Glad you're enjoying it!

Never took mine apart, wonder if the connector block is slide on(to the board), like the K750 etc......nice simple fix if so!

Posted by Sammy_boy
I hope so too, might try taking it apart after work, though never taken a K800i apart and heard they're a pain to dissasemble!

Though I suspect it's due to the slight moisture damage on the connector

Posted by Nanu
The fast port connector on my w950i is a removable unit so hopefully for you it will be the same, and i cant imagine them being too dear to purchase!

So good luck mate hope you sort it!

Posted by Sammy_boy
Actually, I never thought of that - I've got a K750i which is basically just good for spares, I might try it's Fastport connector in the K800i, I think they're the same size and everything!

Will have a go when I get back from work as just about to go

at least your having more success with the k800i than i am with the w810i i got the other day.

it is water damaged and it apparently has a software fault, and my comp wont recognise the bugger, so i cant flash it

I try to avoid water damage if I can, it is a bugger to fix, and is often terminal sadly

Will see if I can pluck up the courage to take the K800i apart when I get home!

Posted by Sammy_boy
Just tried taking the phone apart, but got no idea how to get all the bits like the keypad, camera unit etc. off the mainboard! Managed to snap a small plastic clip off the bit securing the keyboard Still works OK though thankfully!

At least it charges and communicates with the PC, though you need to make sure the connector's in a certain place. Still a brilliant phone!

Have a look at this it may be of some help mate!!

Posted by Sammy_boy
Cheers for that Nanu, though the thing I had problems with is that Memory stick M2 cover seems to be attached to the mainboard, so I can't get it out of the phone's front facia, not without trying to force it and probably breaking it anyway!

@samboy - Congrats on your K800 mate ! The usual problem that I know of when the fone does not charge is the contacts-beneath it . . . good thing that commonsense dictated to get you a desktop charger and an extra battery in advance . . . if everything else FAILS, the desktop charger will be the one who will remedy the problem . . .

Posted by Sammy_boy
Indeed Jojo, means I've got a pretty much fully working K800i quite cheap, only problem means swapping batteries about - but can charge it just about via the USB lead!

Might have another go at taking the phone apart tomorrow if I can find a way past that M2 cover that's stuck to the mainboard, though I'm tempted to leave it as it is, bit scared of buggering it up completely!

Think I need to get a cheap, dead K800i to practise on!

Posted by Sammy_boy
Decided to update the firmware on the phone, and had a bit of a hairy moment when it disconnected 25% of the way through! Luckily managed to get it back into SEUS and it's updated fine!

Also for some reason the desktop charger doesn't like charging the genuine SE battery that came with the phone, and is currently a bit reluctant to charge the other non-gen battery I'm currently using. Bet that damn things faulty, though still charges through USB as long as you don't disturb it too much!

Posted by gaming_guy
please dont take my word as i dont know if this is true or not, but i have heard that you have to pull a capacitor up to remove the cover

EDIT: see the bottom part of the first post here

Hi Guys...can someone help me if the image here in is of Fake BST-33 Li-Polymer battery for K800i ? Is it the reason the Battery is not charging or may not be charging?

I got it from eBay for liek 1.99 USD with following specification

Model: BST-33
Capacity: 770mAh ?? Isn't that weired shouldn't it be 900mAh?

Also do you guys think that thats why the battery doesnot charge in my case?

I think the battery from eBay came in with 15% charge? Don't know how?
Please look at the image here in and would appreciate somebody's reply.

Thank you!

you have to pull that M2 cover while the housing is still intact but be careful not to break it there is a way to pull it out, coz it has a hooklike end so it make it difficult to pull

Managed to get the phone apart now, also I don't think my phone will charge via the charger any more, tried changing the charger port and it's still doing it - looks like there's some corrosion on one of the contacts on the PCB's charger port

@webchetan - I suspect that is a fake battery, the manufacturing date on that phone is from 2003 - 3 years before the K800i came out! Someone's copied the info from a real battery, so it could be why it isn't charging.

Thanks Sammy - I thought so. It seemed weired and I believe thats one of the reason the battery is not charging. Becoz when I plug-in the charger it says "Charging" I have kept it for 9 hours but still it didn't charge.

Also in any case how did it come with 15% charge? I mean any clues? Was it forcefully charged or something?

Puzzles me. I am waiting for a New Li-Ion Battery which I have ordered from a professional dealer and they use GoogleCheckout. So hopefully the battery should be genuine the one I am waiting for.

Thank you,

Most batteries will ship with some charge, they almost never are shipped completely flat in my experience. Probably due to the manufacturing process I guess.

Posted by webchetan
Sammy - So I guess the battery being 3 years old, looks like its either lost its capacity or ist real fake. Hence its not charging? Don't you think so? because the cellphone seems ok and it does show Charging Icon when plugged in. But I have taken the battery out and don't want to take a risk with my phone. My original battery is with my cousin as she forgot to ship me when sending me the phone with her sister. So I had to order it from eBay! but alas! that battery didn't work. So have to wait for the original one to be coming my way...soon.

Thanks again...

No problem!

I don't think the battery's 3 years old, most probably a fake! There are some quite genuine looking fakes out there, but there's normally some way to tell still.

Hi Guys - Just to let you know. I got the Original battery for K800i and K800i works like a charm. The red light near infrared port is when the battery is low. So guys make sure your battery is full and don't flash your phone, unless you are really sure its not the battery.

cheers!

So... I got my K800 muddy, and while cleaning it up I scratched off most of one of the port contacts at the bottom. It doesn't seem to charge through the USB cable anymore, so I assume this contact is responsible for power. If you hold the phone normally, then tilt the top away from you, its the strip in the far right which I've damaged.

Can anyone think of anything I an do to get the phone to charge from USB again, without replacing the port?
...is replacing the port easy? Where can I get one!?

On a sidenote, the battery status bar still does the charging animation when I plug the cable in. So I guess "charging" involves more than 2 contacts.

hi all newbie here thought id help a bit. I got mine wet in the "great flood of yorkshire"

it was fine after i let it dry out, except the cammera didn't work and after two days i noticed the two last contacts at the bottom where missing so i changed the unit with one out of k750i and all was fine just be carefull when prising apart the last peice of plastic casing to get to the contacts. theirs 3 clips on either side start from top and work your way down to the contacts then slide the plastic down slighlt. but after that they slide off.
a week ater the phone would come on until i selected the phone mode/ flight mode after this it would just flicker now it wont come on at all. so i opened it up again and their was green powder on the left hand bottom side near the IR I think their is a row of 5 little chip things and two are missing does any one have a pick of the board so i can check. or does any one have an idea what might be up with it
Cheers
