So basically this is just a thinner W810 with "premium material" right?

Posted by goldenface
With M2, Picture Blogging, Stereo Speakers and TrackID.

More like a W830 but with Autofocus is how I would look at it.

I like the design, at least more than W880 and K810.

I would really want this phone if only it had QVGA resolution.

W880 has QVGA, so why go back to the 176x220 resolution for W610?

And the weird thing, even though W880 has QVGA, its screen size is smaller than W610. What was SE thinking?!

Posted by goldenface
Hardly makes sense at all does it, nless it was a 'costing' thing. I agree with what you're saying.

They have put the higher resolution on a smaller display and they are both so its not as if one is a Cyber-shot either.

This is why the Fastport placed on the phone's side would suck:

- phone is more uncomfortable to hold with the left hand when Fastport is in use (e.g., handsfree or MMR-60 connected);
- cable tends to bend more in the opposite direction when using the phone than when the Fastport was still at the phone's bottom;
- I don't know how I would still be able to put that in my pants' pocket without worrying about the handsfree cable getting bent too much.
- imagine putting some accessories on the phone, e.g., MXE-60. Won't it look weird? Also, My W800i with MXE-60 is still very pocketable. I can't see that happening with W610i with MXE-60.

How is this phone different from the W810i? Not considering the new improved sleeker design, but is there any difference in features or functionality? They seem almost identical to me. The only difference seems to be in the software features (UI and Walkman 2.0 player).

Posted by Residentevil
NIce looking phone. Fast port should go on the bottom. They will learn.

Posted by DeLa
Very nice design, especially the back - in black...
SE is finally getting a new consistent look throughout their phones.
Side connector: probably thsi makes it possible to make the phone thinner, especially at the bottom? Problem of bending depends on how you put the phone in your pocket. If you put it upwards, with the bottom down, it would bend less than with the bottom connector.

With Fastport on the side, it'll be hard for left-hand texters or 2-handed texters (like myself) to type messages or play games while listening to music...

same as K600
all the back cover will be removed to put the battery

Posted by jepherberich
yup. must be the panel extending all the way to the left edge of the circular panel surrounding the camera. unless the rendered press photos have been modified to hide the breaks in plastic where the battery cover and the back panel really are

do you think that it is the better place for the fastport?

it would be unconfortable to carry my phone inside my pocket with the fastport placed in the sides.

Really dont see the point of making the same basic spec handset with a new look and the look is not even all that.

I'm getting pretty down on SE lately. All the new phones they create look and function basically the same (at least US phones). It seems like they make a ton of other Walman phones that won't work in the US that have a different looks and features.

I originally started with a W800i years ago, but had to upgrade to the W810i since the signal for the W800i was shady at best. This was fine, since it was basically the same phone (but I do miss the camera lense cover and joystick). The 2.0 megapixel camera resolution in the Walkman phones has been the same since the W800i. It would be nice if there was an upgrade option there while still sticking with the Walkman features.

Why don't they offer a Walkman phone that has the camera resolution of their CyberShot and just charge a little more for it (although they are pretty expensive already). I would like the best possible all-in-one device so I only need to carry one thing with me wherever I go. 2.0 megapixel cam resolution is okay, but it doesn't compare at all to new cameras these days with 8+ mp resolutions. How about an upgrade there.

I want the Walkman player 2.0, but I don't want to spend $400-$500 dollars for it. How about a firmware upgrade for the W8xx series that are still using 1.x?

Thin is nice, but I'd prefer more power/features. Can we get a model that has that option? Let's see a little variety here SE... and some more significant upgrades!

... and please bring back the camera lense from the W800i!

...and another thing. As soon as I upgrade my W810i to a 2gb Memory Stick Pro Duo, they change to a new memory media in new phones. Thanks!

welcome to the free market. you'll have to understand has to have something up its sleeve to keep the money pouring in, so they'd have something to fuel R&D, so they can chunk out newer models, and the cycle goes on. if you dont feel like youre getting the same deal you did with your W800, feel free to look somewhere else. the consumers talk best with their $$$s

btw the W610 is essentially a W810 in another shell and software enhancements that wouldnt have problems shoving onto the W800 (that is, if W800 sales still warrant and stoke further R&D. the short answer being NO, and we all eventually have to move on

i like the phone... nice upgrade from w800 for me.

Posted by goldenface
This phone is supposed to take over from the W810i but in my opinion the W810i still has a lot of mileage left in it - some might argue that the W810i is better looking than the W610i.

Posted by mustafabay
1) Why say this is replacing the W810, yes its a slight upgrade but its positioning is lower. I'd think they might modify the K810 and push it as a W810 successor.

2) Anyone have an idea on pricing?

Posted by chili
Wonder what "Premium material" is exactly? Is there a technical description for this (which would make it better built than other SE phones), or is it just a marketing catchphrase??

Posted by bigbogus
Since the W610 come with Walkman player 2.0 and pretty much the same "insides" as the W810, would it be too much to hope for a firmware upgrade for my W810 to include the Walkman player 2.0? If they did that, I wouldn't be as disapointed...

yes, it is to much to hope for. The phone industry works a bit different from the PC industry. If you want a new or a much improved feature you have to buy a new phone rather than upgrading your old. Not because its impossible to upgrade your old phone, but rather because they make more money that way (it may change in future, who knows).

mustafabay/goldenface: i also couldnt make sense of why they had to give the w610 a lower index than a w810 when it's obviously more feature-packed, on paper, at least. i have no idea about the pricing either

chili: premium material = brushed metal is as far as i can tell, and that was applied to the w880. the w610 looks as plastic as it gets to me. i didnt know theyre using it across the board in these new phones too

Mobile Review on the W610:

Posted by miguel19
It's a nice phone. And even if they created this with only new housing and walkman player, this will help the price of older phones like W810 to be lower and more affordable! Right?

Posted by PeterKay
Correct, prices should drop!

Posted by jepherberich
actually i may just have the answer now; notice in GSMArena's K550 review that the K550/W610 camera's lens's focal length is 3.8, as opposed to 4.8 in the K750/W810. smaller lens = less image quality. While this shouldn't be a big issue for the W610, for the K550 it confirms that (also mentioned in GSMArena's review) that giving the K550 the Cybershot label is a marketing move to push the phone as an imaging alternative. doesnt bode well for long-time zealots like myself

Its out now on O2! For anyone who hasnt got a W800 or a W810 this seems like a very good choice, well equiped with an Auto focus camera and FM radio, I would have this over the W880.

Ps - Although I like this phone I dont lke SE`s current trend of small thin button design!!

Not feelin' those number keys. And the chrome surrounds on the middle set of buttons are tacky.

Looks like my W810 and I are sticking together for a longer while.

I went into Carphone Warehouse today just getting a feel of new phones looking at the dummy ones and i seen the K550i and the W610i and could hardly tell them apart and feature wise they aint nothing new. I then seen some bloke with a demo of the N95 and wow now that was what i call an exciting new phone. And with all its got and that huge screen it aint all that big i think. But my point is SE have become drab to me and those thin horrible buttons on the new phones i can hardly press them way too small and the navi pad is too. But at least they got rid of that joystick at last.
