Sony Ericsson adds two new stars to its music phone line-up: The stunning W880/W888 & the multi-talented W610 Walkman® phones

London, UK – 6th February 2007 – Sony Ericsson today announces two new Walkman® phones; the W880/W888 and W610 build on the success of hit-models such as the W810 and to broaden the appeal of the Walkman® phone. 20 million Walkman® phones have been sold to date. Sony Ericsson also announces a suite of music accessories designed to enhance the Walkman® phone listening experience.

The W610 Walkman® phone is all about the detail, whether this is detail in design that builds on the look of earlier Walkman® phones or the detailed combination of mobile music with a credible digital camera. The W610 stores up to 470 full-length music tracks* on the 512MB Memory Stick Micro™ (M2) provided, and offers the inventive TrackID™ music recognition application; a feature that lets the user record a clip of an unknown music track onto their phone and immediately receive a notification of the track name, artist and album. Add to this a 2.0 megapixel camera with auto focus and the W610 is a credible fusion of phone, music player & digital camera.

“Our Walkman phones have proven to be phenomenally attractive to our consumers – we have sold 20 million Walkman® phones since launch – and we are continuously developing the portfolio to extend their appeal,” says Steve Walker, Head of Product Marketing at Sony Ericsson. “The W880/W888 and W610 prove how the Walkman® phone can appeal to different lifestyles – the W880/W888 is a hi-specification device that looks every bit as good as it sounds. And the W610 Walkman® phone combines the best in both music player & digital camera, whilst first & foremost remaining a phone that’s intuitive and pleasurable to use.”

The W610 Walkman® phone is a fully specified music phone that does not compromise on its digital camera offering. As well as the 2.0 megapixel camera with auto focus, video recording and playback, the W610 provides a horizontal camera menu – so that the user holds it as they would a regular camera when taking a picture - and a Picture blogging facility for uploading photo’s direct to a user’s online blog site. Switching back to the music credentials, the W610 includes an RDS FM Radio to brighten up the daily commute or trip to the gym. In fact, the only compromise with the W610 Walkman® phone is choosing between the two colour options; will it be Plush Orange or Satin Black?

The W610 Walkman® phone is an EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 music camera phone and will be available in selected markets from Q2 2007.

The Perfect Musical Accompaniments

Of course, if a user wishes to share their tunes, no matter where they are, they can do this with the Portable Speakers MPS-70. Light on power as well as weight, these compact speakers plug into the phone, contain an FM antenna for improved radio reception and will also run off the phone’s battery. Tuned for Sony Ericsson phones, the MPS-70 delivers great sound and, with a design that’s a true match for Walkman® phones, no one will want to leave home without them. Available from Q2 2007.

GSM Arena has a review on W880.

Pictures taken by the W880 via GSMarena:

Final comments by GSM Arena:

The Sony Ericsson W880 is a great addition to the Sony Ericsson lineup. Furthermore it is a really intriguing addition to the group of the slimmest champion mobile phones in the market. Since most of those doesn't feature 3G support, the W880 will most surely find its market niche and would gain strong popularity.

We are impressed with the usability of the device, the nice technical specifications, the great music player and the decent battery life. All in all, a great move from Sony Ericsson that would win them a lot of fans. Well, as it seems, the Sony Ericsson W880 was surely worth the commotion and all that months of waiting.

Posted by tranced
is really noticeable the lack of AF.

Posted by jepherberich
OK so i grew to like the front, but my two poo-poos remain: (1) that's a small screen to fit qvga pixels on! (2) the back is just blah. at least they couldve tried aligning the logo with the camera, that'd be more aesthetic imo, and that logo is just a texture slapped onto the plastic. the squares and the studs are fine.

Just saw the gsmarena w880 review... It looks like this new batch of SE Java phones don't have any improvements at all in the UI/software usability???

It used to be that each new batch had something new in the UI/software:

K750/W800 vs. K700/S700 -- introduction of Activity Button or Walkman Button; new theme version; ability to save web pages; ability to use web browser to open .txt files.

W810/W550 vs K750/W800 -- copy and paste; background SMS sending.

K610/K800 vs W810/W550 -- ability to run multiple Java apps simultaneously.

I hope there's something about the w880 that the reviewers missed.

The k610 has af buut the w880 doesnt? Why?

Posted by MurtazinEldar
Actually this phones has a lot of improvements in software

Video Player with screencapture feature
Icons on standby screen
New photoDJ apps
Walkman 2.0 in Walkman series

and some others. In my opinion it is good move ahead.

BTW, full review of commercial unit is here

From Mobile Review regarding the W880i:

"The model is due out in the end of March at a price of not less than 400 Euro, for the Russian market it will make up about 560-630 USD at the first stage. In a nutshell, its price curve will be identical to what we saw with Sony Ericsson W850i – it will get off to a start on the same level and work its way down the price ladder in pretty much the same fashion. "

From Sony Ericsson Developer

"The W610 will be available during Q2 2007.
The W880 will be available during Q1 2007. The W888 is a GSM variant specifically for the Chinese market where 3G services are not established."

Wow, so with the W610 have SE finally decided to produce a possible upgrade to my W800?

I've had the W800 since it came out here but in Aug I couldn't see a phone to upgrade to. The W810 wasn't much of a leap and I've been holding out for an upgrade. Sad thing is that I wanted the styling of the W series and a slightly better camera. Doesn't really look like much of an upgrade but I guess with my joystick gettin a bit unresponsive I'm gonna have to make the leap and hope for something better next year.

Posted by *Jojo*
@jake - Maybe the W880 will do for an UPGRADE

i'hav been wating for a phone like this for months...though i wanted a swivel phone :S

I still keep waiting for something like w890---w880+FM; rds,&autofocus and maybe a slider

Posted by jakester2000
@jojo - Im not sure the W880 is much of an upgrade from the W800. First problem is the W880 doesn't have AF so the camera is actually a little bit worse! The big downer on the W880 for me is the lack of FM radio. Although I use the music player a lot, I also listen to my radio a fair bit.

The W610 does have these so its an upgrade but more of a cosmetic upgrade

Also, if Im not picky enough already then I only really want a candybar phone!

W880 available in Hong Kong today retail. Full newspaper ad as well. official release.

whats the price in HK? in sterling!

Posted by dumbdumb
yupyup... $4180 or around 536 USD... the W880 is actually pretty nice and looks better than in picture... however, the number pad buttons seem to be too small. I only got to see the silver one though. Not sure if they just dont have the black/orange one available in hk yet or they just dont have it in their shop.

You can also see some info from one2free and smartone-vodafone
