ever wondered what the little black dot next to the earpeace (to the right) is? well, it's a light sensor! to show you what it does, try covering it while the phone is in a bright place, notice the keypad light comes on? cool huh? yep
Another way our beloved se is saving our battery life... this sensor also varys the display's brightness according to the situation! cool eh

yup.. the good 'ol 7650 even has it... though i'ts for the loudspeaker. when you play a clip or make a phone call using the speaker, put it in your ear and it redirects the sound the the earpiece.

also, what if you make a call(putting the phone on your ear covering the sensor) , and the sensor "thinks" its dark, and lights up the backlight. still not smart enough of SE to put it there (unless they've tweaked the software...)

Posted by tranced
@tom: not, w800 doesn't have this feature.

Posted by TomMy_lee
oh, tht's bad. Then wht is the use of the black tiny little thing beside the cam?

Posted by bombadil
are you talking about the speaker?

Posted by TomMy_lee
No. I know the speaker is below the cam. But there's a small thing beside the cam. Does anyone knows the uses of it?

Posted by SE4NICK
Well, how do lights come on on other phones, wouldnt they all have this feature somewhere on them ?

That little black hole beside the mirror on the camera? If you remove the orange cap,it`s for an external ariel.

But this sensor also needs some power from battery to work...

never noticed that before lol

cheers

Can I know wht is tht external ariel u mean?

Posted by BUFFBOY
anyone notice the cover in the back.. under it theres a battery

Posted by amanno1
It`s for when you connect the phone to a handsfree on the dsah board, you pull of the orange cap and if fits on to the back of the handsfree holder.

Posted by TomMy_lee
Erm, can post a picture with it? Not quite understand...
haha

I knew this the first day I bought my phone, it tells you in the manual.

Posted by rhythmeister
It's a great little idea, helps yr eyes to not get hurt when yr playing with the fone in the dark!

FASCINATIING(sarcasm)

Posted by Chrispy
hah! we can't all have fascinating posts, wap. now show some respect!

You know what's fascinating ? That the led does not appear on the www.sonyericsson.com site ! Look at the pictures provided by the Sony Ericsson website and observe that the images do not cover this led thing ...

Posted by Horonaim
wow pretty cool. too bad it isnt on the k800.

Posted by sridhar
I noticed it when i bought my w810. Yup its a nice feature for increasing the battery backup time.

Posted by abbafan1972
I knew my W810 had the light sensor, but didn't realise that's where it was.

lol even the razr v3 has that ...and thats quite and old phone now

@dumbrella - Nice find mate ! I'm wondering if other fone-models has this NEW feature

Posted by josesoto14
that's why for me SE will still be ahead in technology, I mean, they really think about what the customer needs according to the cell they are going to buy, meaning, the w810 needs to save up as much battery as posible, cuz its a walkman (for people like me that don't stop listening to music, 2gb), and that's why since my r300z, I'm not changing brands!

Posted by Issa88
I like this feature too. It saves battery which is mostly needed in the w810i.

What i find more interesting is,
The w810 light sensor works way more faster than the v3 light sensor. [Even most nokia phones].
