My O2 contract is coming up for upgrade but I've got a VPA 1605 I want to use for O2 so I'm considering choosing an O2 phone for my Vodafone contract. Quite fancying something simple like a K800 or N73, but need to be sure that they're unlocked. It seems to be mixed as I've seen times when O2 lock these types of phones but other times they don't - any assistance greatly appreciated.

As far as I know O2 don't lock their contract handsets at all, just tried an Orange sim in the Nokia 6131 I got when I renewed my contract last month and it works fine!
Not sure about their 3G handsets though, I've got an O2 6680 which is locked to the O2 network, but I got that secondhand so not sure if that was a contract or pay as you go handset.

Contract: Normally unlocked
PayasyouGo: Normally locked
A friend of mine has an N73 on O2 contract, it's not locked, so I'd say your 6680 was PnG, Sammy!

Thanks for the quick responses, much appreciated.
Really tempted by the N73 as it seems a good size, batterlife and it takes mini sd. But...it's a Nokia and I'm sure in a couple of months it will be covering dust because it's falling apart and the bugs irritate me.
K800i is a good solid phone and does everything I need but it's annoying it's yet another memory card format and it's not much different from my W900. I like the idea of the W950, with a camera, wi-fi and an M600 keyboard I would have gone for it but as it stands I'd rather spend the money on a dedicated 4GB mp3 player.
Decisions, decisions..

I know - that's why I said if it did have a camera, wi-fi and an M600 keyboard I'd buy it.

I can't get my back cover off my Silver K800i otherwise i'd check for you
I think it could be locked tho, it has a lot of 02 Menu's for the internet

Is your phone PayandGo, Miss UK??
Don't take it apart! On the standby screen, tap: Left(joystick), *, *, Left(joystick). Should show all locks and their status...

my mate always buys phones on o2 because they are cheaper then whacks any sim in it and it works. with out debranding. Cool. but i thought that o2 would loose money by allowing users to buy a o2 payg phone and put a voda sim in.

Damn - sold my K800!
But it works on my W800...
If that doesn't work, you could try the service menu:
EDIT: you found it....

Phones alrite,
i'd prefer if I had that N80 tho in Black especially
Posted by Aware
Had a go with an N80(also black) back around April/May, when I had an N70.......didn't go for it tho, bad/slow firmware/small battery/camera put me off....
(.....sold the N70 after 3days, too(went back to P900), nevermind!)
Um, better get back to topic: anyone bought an O2 Pay as you Go phone from a store, that's unlocked??
Posted by Sammy_boy
Pay and Go O2 handsets are normally locked I'm afraid, it's only their contract ones which are generally factory unlocked.

Yeah people do keep saying that N80 is slow but i'd of had it over my K800i only got it cos it was £30
