any ericsson or SE with the old style connector can charge the car, so just find the cheapest one of those available
I have not seen any other method of charging the car except using a phone

What models of that phone have that kind of adaptor ? The oldest and cheapest the better !

Any Sony Ericsson older than K750 (I think) will do, some of the last Ericsson phones can work too. (I can use both my
Z600 and my Old 
A2618s.)

If you could rip the connector out of two old phones, you might be able to make an adapter to charge the thing with the phone's charger

agreed, but I haven't seen anyone do it yet. We've also had a couple of threads for 3rd party 'old style' to 'fastport' adaptors like the one in the picture below, but again, I still have not seen anything actually being sold
