hey guys, i'm looking to get a phone for work, my key requirements being:

a 'today' screen, stable interface

ability to read/edit MS office documents

excellent call quality, good keypad for typing messages

compact and slim, with a great display

good connectivity, wifi and 3G preferably

good battery life

so i've been looking around and it seems nokia e65 best suits my needs. i've read some reviews on it around, but what i want to know are user opinions. any of you lads use one? here's what i need to know...

does it hang a lot? how about battery life with moderate to heavy usage?

any issues that i should know of concerning the office application?

does it support syncing with outlook? or company webmail? are the security features good?

how is the internet browser's capabilities? does it support most pages, even those with advanced encodings (flash, ect.)?

hope you guys can key me in on this, thanks. and any suggestions for other models that fit the bill would be appreciated too. cheers

Hi Bodum,

Although the E65 is a great device as a new owner i can highly recommend the E61 to do what you have asked although not sure about Flash sites.

@Boba
not being picky but that is grey and white I'll post a black one soon.

@ doggman

morning, mate. e61? isn't it a bit on the big side? it does have a QWERTY keypad, but i won't be doing any major document editing so that won't be necessary. what else does the e61 has in advantage to the e65?

Posted by Dogmann
@bodum

Having just had a N93 everything is smaller for me, the E61 is wide but not much bigger than a M600 if at all but has a 16m colour large screen. Which is great for everything from Calendar, E-mail, Web browsing, watching video's or films and also has a excellent Music player. It is a quality product and the keypad is easy to use at feels good easily the best i have used on any device by far. It is also extremely reasonably priced, even the brand new i version is sub £300 which for the features it offers is great value IMHO. All i can say is i wish i had tried one earlier as i am well and truly converted.

Also you did say "ability to read/edit MS office documents " and whilst a lot of smart phones have the ability to read not many come preloaded with the ability to edit or send things directly to printers it has a large additional feature list. I would advise checking one out as the construction is solid yet extremely tactile as you may be able to tell i am more than pleased with mine.

thanks for the reply. i am considering both now, with the decision swinging the e65's way as to it's compact design. i'm not going to have too much use for major data entry, hence i don't need a QWERTY keypad. if i'm not mistaken, both phones share the same feature set apart from the display and the QWERTY. i'm not going to have much use for a larger display as well, i think.

@ singaporeans

i am getting my phone from singapore. any of you could tell me how to tell if a nokia is from an authorized reseller (original set), or a grey import? your input is much appreciated.

Hi! Been studying 4 me finals, have u looked @ the E70? Its almost like the E65 nd its almost as small. It has a fold out keyboard. And a 2 megapixel camera. Its another option u could look @ before u buy the E65.

Posted by BobaFett
e70 is a greta fone, but its not that slim. e60 or e65 would be the best options imo

I tried e70 yesterday (only now available here...) - never realised it had such a tiny screen but feels quite nice

@bodum

Well from the additional information of what you want it does look like the E65 may well suit your needs better, hope you find it at a good price.

if 3g and wifi wouldnt be thta important, i would say e50

Posted by bickit
If u can wait abit nd not mind a wee bit of thickness, why not just treat yourself 2 the E90? It has everything! And might i add its highly functional?

But he said he doesn't even NEED qwerty etc... Would he need an e90? i'd take one if you pay:lol:

next to it, e90 isnt that slim....

I think he made dicision to get E65

Posted by bodum
thanks everyone for your input. i looked at the e70, and e90, but both phone's design were not to my liking unfortunately. so i got an e65, which i'm very pleased with right now. i particularly like the metal feel, and the detailings on the phone. build quality is ok, not the greatest but solid enough for everyday usage i say. screen isn't that great compared with my k800, it is a bit dimmer even at the brightest settings. but overall, it's a great phone with the following advantages in UI over my k800, which i wish SE would implement in their phones:

a very good 'today' screen.
a 'lock phone' option, for those phones carrying sensitive information.
more options in the recent activities list, for example instead of just a call log, it lists an sms log as well.

still looking at the phone. it seems my phone comes with most of the apps, which means i don't have to purchase them anymore. satisfied with it so far.

and again, thanks all for your inputs. cheers

How is the e50, pros and cons...
aatuif...

Posted by BobaFett
e50 is a great device, very good batt life and great keypad, but i had problems with the joy. the metal cover is very stylish, great features, but no 3g, only edge. had no problems with hw/sw, was very stable.

Posted by bodum
i would say that the e50 is on par with e65 in terms of features, apart from 3G and camera. it has a better screen though, and looks more businesslike. both phones are largely stable, good for first time symbian users i think.

Posted by BobaFett
i forgot to mention, that the fonts are a bit small for my taste, but of course its individual. at browsing and viewing documents u can zoom on the text, but not at texting

Posted by bodum
personally i prefer the smaller fonts, i think it makes my phone looks 'busier'. SE's fonts are ok, but i would prefer to cram more to make up for that space, maybe an option for font size. but that's just me.

Posted by aatuif
What camera does the e50 have... and are it's fonts pain, i think it's screen is mighty big, 240 by 320, ?

Posted by BobaFett
e50 has got 1.3 mo cam, same as 6680 for example. u can get the e50-2 too, the no cam edition of it, thats a bit cheaper

Posted by bickit
About the E65, is finding and setting up a wifi hotspot easier? Is there a wizard that helps you?

Posted by BobaFett
donnow if its incl in the fw it comes with, but u can download for free from nokia web the wlan wizard and hotspot finder ( as i recall both are at the n80 internet edition support )

Posted by bodum
it's easy as pie, the e65 i have comes included with the wi-fi wizard. just a 2 click process would do.

a stupid question, guys. how do i turn on the backlight when the phone is in standby mode? been a SE user for ages, and the volume buttons doesn't seem to do the trick

2 simple thms

some icons are shown as in the original nokia thm

greenium and redium

Posted by bodum
very nice, boba. don't know much about nokia themes, does the e65 support these themes? and why are some of the icons out of syncs with the others? like the look of the new icons...

Posted by BobaFett
imo e65 should support it. donnow why the some icons are shown that way, probably the one who made those didnt created other for the orginal ones

Posted by bickit
I wonder if there's going to be a touchscreen (phone, not tablet) Eseries to rival S.E P1?

Posted by QVGA
i dont think nokia needs to rival SE as they are far ahead. it should be the other way around

Posted by QVGA

check this theme out

Posted by BobaFett
dont think that nokia is after a touchscreen, excpet the 67 or 68 whatever, which is a toy imo, no sign of any touchscreen fones

Posted by QVGA
boba, which phone has that theme you posted? was it preinstalled?

Posted by BobaFett
no, i downloaded it from a thm site. but i am back to the oroginal nokia thm, it was fun to use it 1 day long

Posted by QVGA
i like that theme, where did you download it from?

Posted by BobaFett
no idea. pm me your email, i send it u.

i love simple thms, but i couldnt fine til now a really good one. on 6680 i used ipod blue or sg like that, its was very good. no use for any wp in e series, it doesnt shown full size anyway

Posted by bickit
I wonder, is the E61i better than a Qtek S100? I mean, the S100 has a touch screen and really great multimedia capabilities but the OS is just nasty! The E61i has a 2mpx camera, not so great multimedia but a HUGE screen and a keyboard. This is a stupid question, i know, but if u had the chance, which one would u buy?

e61i of course, mainly cos of nokia support. its easier to get apps for it imo

Posted by bickit
Okay, nokia E90 or sony ericsson P1?

Posted by Dogmann
@bickit

I really don't understand why you say that the Multimedia in the E61i isn't that great as although i only have the E61 both the Music player and video playback on that screen is stunning and every bit as good as it was on my N93 which i will admit did surprise me.

Re the E90 or P1 well it all depends on if you need or want a touchscreen or not but spec's wise the E90 has much more and of course that massive screen and proper qwerty but really i depends on what you prefer and need it to do.

if u are a communicator fan, then go fot the e90. but its hard to compare those, non of them was launched yet, so we could just guess

Posted by bickit
Okay, my classmates E61's mp3 player sounded a tad worse than my E60 which made me wonder. Im just checking up on the E61i coz its much better than my N72, which i assure you all is a temporary phone. The E61i is my idea of a phone/ affordable communicator. Is it the software of the phone or were my ears bad?

Posted by BobaFett
the music player is the same in every e series fones, all i can imagine is an older fw version or sg othet bug

I know this is the "E" thread but I have a question for some Symbian Series 60 V. 3'ers.

Is there a simple and easy to use theme maker/editor out there? The one on the Nokia site is almost impossible to use. Not that it isn't good but it is very complicated.

Thanks.

@bickit

A lot would depend on which headphones and how the tracks where encoded as if their 56kbps using the stock headphones it wouldn't be the same as 160kbps AAC with a Nokia 3.5m adapter and a pair of Shure E2g headphones the results are truly stunning and on par with a dedicated MP3 player IMHO. If it really wasn't up to the job i wouldn't bother with it, there is nothing worse than listening to average quality music.
