Because the number four ìs unlucky in China so they wouldn't sell in that huge market.

Is that an official statement?

That is a good point.
There are only a few Nokia phones that have a 4 in their model number, too.

Its just good business sense. Are there many phones beginning with 4? I can't think of an SE phone with a 4 in its name.

considering China is one of the countries with the most people in it, i would say yes.

Posted by shaliron
Yeah, it's totally to do with the Chinese market. SE has no phones with 4 in it either.

Have you ever wondered why at Chinese restaurants, why they always give you three of an item of food. Never four.

Posted by BobaFett
Isnt it a bit odd, that a nr can cause such decisions?

not really.

what percentage of the worlds population is chinese?

if we go along the idea that the worlds population is give or take 60billion and according to cia.gov the population for china in 2006 in a shade over 1.3billion. so by my maths i make that one in every 45 people is chinese.

you dont wanna be annoying them do you!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_population

cia.gov puts the world population at Approx 6.5 Billion, not 60 Billion.

That makes the chinese 1 in approx 6.5 or round up or down as you please.

Whats the nokia marketshare in china?

what a lack of business and cultural awareness...yes it is because of the chinese market.

If i'm not worng and please correct me if that's the case, i think the number 4 in chinese sounds awfully like death or something like that and therefore is a number to avoid.

Im sorry but it is true more than one in every 6 people in the world is chinese. Even if the number of people in china who can afford a mobile phone is not more than one billion, the market is still hugely influential for most of the manufacturers to piss off the chinese by seeming to lack cultural awareness...

Just as a side note, the biggest mobile company by number of subscribers is China telecom...if that doesn't prove that the chinese market is important, then i don't know what will...

Posted by shaliron
@butterguy
Exactly. 4 and death in Chinese are near identical in sound, so that's why it's so unlucky.

And it's such an easy thing to avoid anyway; just change the model numbers. I don't see what the big fuss is.

The same reason was given by Psion when they jumped from Series 3 to series 5

I have a CHINESE-blood . . . now I know why there's never a 4 in almost any brand of merchandise sold out in the market . . . I don't even see a 4 -series Bimmer and perhaps even a - 6 one

The number - 8 is LUCKY in Chinese . .. now I know why the 8-series model fones of Nokia are soooooooo expensive during it's INITIAL release, specially those metal-plated: 8850, 8855, 8890, 8800 (not the 8210 and 8250 though . . . .)

Posted by shaliron
@*Jojo*
No, I thought the number 9 was lucky in China.

@shali - For all I KNOW of dude . . . the #8 is the LUCKY one in - Chinese . . . that's why the MOST saleable CAR PLATE at my end usually are those with number ending in TRIPLE: 8 or 7 . . . say like: XXX 888 or XXX 777. Though it has an extra US$ 300-400 charge . . . when I was looking for one . . . the ONLY remaining that I have to choose on are either: 666 or 999 . . . why the hell should I be gettin' the - 666 ! Car plates at my end can be personalized too . . . 3-letters for your names initials (2nd one is your maiden name).

Yup, and I agree that the world's population is - 6B and NOT - 60B !

This case can be connected with that on the ELEVATORs too . . . there's NO 13th FLOOR on it . . . UNLESS, if the building has only - 12 FLOORS and the numbering will END at the . . . 12th floor !

Does nokia made on its own this decision or was it forced by anyone?

This message was posted from a 6233

@boba
Well Nokia would have made a conscious decision to do this. And as I said, it's not very hard to implement. There's no harm done either, so it's just very very simple marketing.

@*jojo*
Nup it's nine

Hmmm... Now i begin to wonder, is every 6 members in esato is chineese???

Never thought that chinese influence is that big. Any other interesting decisions in tech world for the chines interest?

@shali - Looks like the Chinese who are here at my END are faked by their BELIEF that their lucky number is - 8

By the way I got the word: FENG SHUI spelled wrongly with my first post . . . sorry.

same as 8...

Posted by shaliron
But I do know that 9 is more lucky. For example when I visited China to see the a place called Tian Tan, there was a monument which had its steps arranged in croups of nine.

Posted by BobaFett
in tourism and hotelry the 13 is an unmlucky nr, no htles ( at least in traditional ones 9 no room 13, no 13th floor, as i recall, in sport no 13 nr to find

Posted by shaliron
Speaking about buildings, the number eight (being lucky as well) influenced the number of floors for this building, because the builder wanted a lucky number for the amount of storeys, and 88 was chosen:

@shali - See . . . 8 is their (Chinese) lucky number too. Though I am certain that the LUCKY color in Chinese is - RED! As it is a sign for: Health, Wealth and Fortune . . .

Posted by shaliron
@*Jojo*
Right again Red represents luck and prosperity in China. Thats why a lot of products tend to be red. Red lanterns, red ornaments etc.

Posted by xpx
jojo

according to my chinise friends 9 is most luckiest number.
while some of my filipino friends believes 8 is the luckiest number cus theres no ending on the number, keep circulating.

Posted by acib
i wont use number 8 in any occasion

is 7 means anything to chinese ? i like no.7 a lot..

Posted by kwabs2006
red is the major color of the chinese flag!!

how come the chinese never said no to intel's p4?
the sex lives of the chinese must be a drab, think about it no 4play right.☺

Posted by @ftyk
people who consider 13 unlucky are even wary of 31 as it is 13 the other way round.
tetraphobia or the chinese fear of the # 4 is co-related to the fear of the # 13 as 1 + 3 = 4.
