I can remember when there was no text at all and no flip phones were around...my first mobile was a motorola brick which was mainly aimed at business executives at the time.
good old days indeed!

I still remember at my end . . . (I guess that was in '93 or '94) wherein you CAN only make calls (NO SMS yet) in certain areas - only, as cell sites are still LIMITED

@axxxr,
I remember those phones from pre launch and have owned most of the Motorola's from the 8000 and up. How many batteries did you have to last a day back then? makes me laugh when i think of the cost and features that we were all so excited about £3.000 was the selling price for the 8000's when first out and i may consider buying a 8500X as they are so cheap nice link thanks for that.

My 1st phone was back in 1999, a PAYG BT Cellnet 'U' Digi Phillips handset, text messages were only 5p to send which was good! ;-)

I remember my first phone being a Nokia 3110 (NOT 3310!), a phone which was brilliant in it's time, relatively compact and quite a few features. Got it when I took out my first ever phone contract!
I remember my dad's first 'mobile' phone at the end of the '80s, a huuuuuge Panasonic mobile phone that you slung over your shoulder. I remember it weighed a ton when I had to carry the thing about with me for him once, my shoulder killed by the end of it!

I went through all the Startac range, the 70, 80, 130 and X and I still have my 130
the early ones had a problem where the plastic was not formed correctly and so it cracked around the antenna opening. I went through 3 casings replaced under warranty before I got one that lasted.

Hehe, here´s my very first phone: http://www.cellular-news.com/phones/Motorola_d160.php
It was a real brick and I had to think hard to come up with the best way to carry it around. I was really glad to get rid of it finally

ok, well if this is going to be another 1st phone thread, here's mine!
NEC 9B (late 1986)
it was anaolgue of course! and note the lack of letters on the keys because this first version had a 100 memory but your couldn't store names against the numbers! a later firmware and keypad update added this feature! cost me $5500 aussie which at todays exchange rate is about £2200! (yikes!)
