Web access with Blackberry and Virgin

I have use of a Blackberry 7130v (unlocked). I put in a Virgin PAYG sim, to use as a normal phone. I would like to have internet access (but don't need email). When switched on, the gprs sign comes on. There is also a note that says "Data connection refused". I'm a total novice at this sort of stuff. I phoned Virgin, who couldn't help - they said that the Blackberry is not on their list, and suggested I look on the Blackberry website, but I didn't manage to find anything that helped.

I saw another post on this forum, which talks about downloading a service book, but don't know if this would help.

Would a different sim card be any more suitable? A good alternative for me would be O2, but again PAYG.
