hi i am looking to get a new prformance pc
it must have over 3ghz processor
4gb ram or more
possibly come with dual screen really good graphics
want a machine for using alias maya and other design software that requiers a high performance pc

Even the best design and graphical software doesn't a require a computer that spec thirsty. Computers like that are for high spec demanding video games alone. Windows XP only supports up to 4GB RAM so if you for some odd reason want more your going to have to wait a bit for Windows Vista. But even so, the computer that you've suggested, you're looking at over a thousand pounds easily.

4gb of ram or more. thats mad. 2gb is plenty and a decent 3.0ghz processor is plenty

So what are you doing then, making a film?
And well if you've got the money, why not, though bare in my having 4GB RAM on computer could work against you instead of for you, over kill backlash.

using it for detailed product design

your not going to make a film though are you lol. i spose if you can afford it and it works well then just go for it

I guess you need to be looking at a basic spec like this one here:
http://www.pcoption.co.uk/sli.htm
Basically, Intel core 2 DUO or AMD dual core FX processor and quad-SLI graphics capability are a must if you want REALLY powerful.
If you took that PC as a base and maxed it out with 4Gb RAM, quad SLI graphics cards and another monitor, you'd probably be looking at around £4500 - £5000!
Oh, and I agree with the others, you don't need 4Gb of RAM just yet!

Just adding that quad core processor(core 2 extreme aka QX6700) really shows gains in POV-Ray,Maya and other studio based applications..

yeah the processors are somewhat improtant but you need an extremely high performance graphics card, im not talking these ones for computer games and that crap im talking 10 grand plus on the card alone.
and i assume youve had training in maya if your willing to fork out the big buck for unlimited?

Yeah, I think Nvidia's Quadro FX range of graphics cards are a popular choice for graphics workstations. Something like £2000 - £3000 each if I remember correctly

well im looking to spend £2000 max at the moment as im starting a business along side university

I dont know which vendor is the best over there but Dell Precision 690 looks good.
It might be a good idea to wait for the quadro based on 8800,as its a major upgrade from 7900s.

@garlic bread
what are you planning on doing in maya...modelling and texturing, animation or rendering/dynamics/paint effects?
