WHat the hell is that sticking out of the top of it !!! An Antenna!!

Like the stone ages or something. I stopped using phones with external antennae because I am rough with phones and they tended to break off!!

wich 3g phone does NOT have an antenna?

Yes.. It's the new SE z1010 in very asian-samsung-clamshell design. (link on the frontpage @ Estato

Posted by bart
a 3G phone is only a phone when it a has a camera for video calling. this nokia is not good! Z1010 and the upcomming motorola 3G are 3G phones. again nokia is bringing out junk whit an antenna

Posted by b-chill
It is also remarkable, that nokia forgot to implement a camera in front of the phone so you have to turn the phone around whenever you want to make a video call. It doesn't make any sense as you can't see who your talking too.. totally crappy.
But in ½ a year, I predict that nokia will come out with about 5 3g phones to beat the competitors.

Posted by fijbert
ugh..
motorola?
I'd rather buy a nokia
at least those things dont just fall apart in ur hands!

motos break so easy it's not even funny..
my moto BT broke becuz it rained
what kept it to gether was a glue
and the glue melted somehow!!!

And if you didn't notice, my post was dated 13.11.2002, more than half an year ago. There wasn't such thing as z1010 introduced yet.

Posted by caff
Its the worst features 3G phone of all ! Only 4096 colour and no video conference call features.........since there's no video camera, only camera for taking pics at the back of the phone ! Pretty crap in terms of 3G phones !

And I thought that 3G definition is based on the network that the terminal uses, ie. WCDMA. I didn't know that it is based on camera for video calling. Stupid me...

Nokia 6650 has video camera...

Posted by caff
It has video camera for taking 15s short clips.........but no video conference as other 3G phones ! Since there's no camera on front of the phone.............pretty useless 3G phone from nokia !

I have mentioned this phone before, and I have to repeat myself, what a lacklustre showing by Nokia.

Hell, even SE waked up and smelled the coffee when they released the Z1010, by far the most interesting 3G phone to date(too bad about the size though, but that goes for all 3G handsets).

And 380 kbps?? Is that really 3G speeds? I thought EDGE could handle that over normal networks?

Either way, I think Nokia may have gone too far when their marketing department got bigger than their R&D department, and that shows now with their latest phone releases.

Well at least some companies are more ahead technically than some others...
http://press.nokia.com/PR/200306/907555_5.html

Also SE didn't have a working version of their 3G Zwhatever in CeBit... Just a plastic one with plastic stickers for the screen. Waw. Or at least they said they had a working one, but then where was it?? Hmm

Besides, I'd like to point out that SE is still lacking any EDGE handset while Nokia already have two...

Anyway, I can agree that 6650 looks aren't the best around (euphemism), but I guess it's likely not targetted to a mass market, more to some selected users from operators i.e. friendly users or so. So who cares about the looks. The technology need to be proven first, then let's see what will happen

And if you do some searching on google, you will find videos of Z1010 in action, from several months ago.

Why on earth should I care if Nokia released a handset first? This is quite clearly not aimed at a consumer, and therefore of no interest at all for Joe user. Every company worth their salt has prototypes of 3G handsets which are used for testing purposes, but why the hell release an obviously flawed phone like this? 3G my a**.

Tell me, would you buy one?

-Knut

edit: btw, as far as I know, you cannot BUY any Nokia Edge handsets yet, at least none of my suppliers has them.

Super G:
where can you use EDGE? In which countries?

Posted by orange
6200 is an edge-phone and it's selling in US. 6220 starts selling soon in Europe. Nobody else hasn't even introduced edge-capable phones yet.

Posted by Knut.G.
My mistake. Although the max data rate of 118 kbps does not impress me. But I guess its the way Nokia has always done packet switched data, providing throughput way under what is supported in the standards/networks.

-Knut

Posted by bart
we knew about this phone for like 2 years. there is only one reason for them to bring it out. to show how bad nokia phones are. antenna, why? no cam for video calling??? sony ericsson, samsung, siemens, motorola, nec are gone bring out 3g phones that are 3g phones, and a 3g phones is 3g when it has video calling.

You really should get the facts straight before you write. In the first phase of WCDMA (3G), 3GPP release99, data transfer rate is 384 kbit/s. Next releases will offer higher transfer rates. In theory also EDGE can support max. 384 kbit/s, but in practise operators will limit it to something like 118 kbit/s. Maybe in the future we can also see higher data transfer rates for EDGE also. So, in conclusion we can say that EDGE can handle max. 384 kbit/s and WCDMA min. 384 kbit/s.

I don't ask you to care or not. The point is that operators do care, and that's what matters in this case as 3G phones will first be sold through operators i.e. with a contract.
I have personally no interest in buying a 3G phone (from whoever) at the moment. Service offering from operators is -as usual- not mature and pricing will be prohibitive for Joe user as you call it. EDGE is what I want. I can do all I want to do with my GPRS phone (video streaming, web and wap browsing etc) today, and EDGE can only make it better. I can get the same services through GSM technology than through WCDMA. Only the max data rates change. This makes the 3G bet even tougher...

The point is -like often in this forum- that there are number of claims SE is far more advanced than Nokia, while in the meantime SE has not begun shipping their 3G phone, has not even unveiled any EDGE phone yet.

To the other post, from whoever, EDGE is being deployed in the US, 6200 is being sold there, and it's starting in Europe (Hungary, Italy) as well as in Asia (at least HK and Taïwan if I recall correctly).

And concerning these inaccurate statements about standards, maybe you should give yourself some time to understand them, first. GPRS allows in *theory* max about 170kbits/s (8 timeslots), EDGE max 473kbits/s (8 timeslots), and WCDMA max 2Mbits/s.
Note also that Nokia so far has made 2 uplink timeslots mobiles (GPRS, EDGE) while others have reached 1 uplink timeslot. (I.e. divide the max data rate above by 4, and 8 respectively). In the downlink, Nokia mobiles operate at max 3 timeslots, while others operate at 4 timeslots. So so, the game is more or less equal between all manufacturers when it comes to implementing a given standard.

With 6650 you can also record long video clips, ie. it's configurable in the settings.
