Hi there. I've only had the phone for about 2-3months but already when pushing the joystick down it doesn't always do it. I have to pull it down with my thumb quite firmly, which is annoying.
Is this firmware related or has it eaten too much dust?

@presto - Having read in the past here that certain
fones have JOYSTICK problems: K700/K750 . . . and now the K800
's K-series family if you have made notice . . . if cleaning will NOT do, maybe a firmware upgrade will do . . . but not 100% sure here . . . maybe something is just loose beneath the joystick Posted by Red_Rach
It appears to be dust thats causing the problem. If you blow very strongly into the joystick area it temporarily fixes the problem. I've not got round to trying one of those air cans yet.
Its a very very annoying fault, and I've have my phone just over a month

Sony Ericsson could easily fix this problem by using a bit of engineering into the joystick. ie have the joystick on a bearing which is completely sealed around the joystick so no crap can get inside.
in inner workings on the handsets should all be sealed anyway.

I'm having problems with the joystick on my K800i too. Down & left is very hard to get it to respond. It's only 8weeks old.

Mines gone back to o2 for repair number one.
It's 3 months old and I'll be sending it back at 6 months, 9 months and just before the 12 month O2 warranty is up to keep it going.
I still prefer the design on my w810i, so much better all round.

I can surely tell you that this is a firmware problem and not hardware.
This sometimes happens to me too when i try to navigate my phone, it just freezes for a couple of seconds and then it becomes fine.
1 time I changed my profile to "outdoor" and with that you hear a tone everytime you move the joystick or press any key, so basicaly when I do move my joystick it makes a tone and it still makes a tone although the cursor on the phone don't move, surely you would think its the faulty joystick if the tone wasn't switched on but how could it be faulty joystick when the phone recognises your joystick movement by giving out a tone signal.
Basicly this phone needs another firmware update.

I've actually opened my k800i to try and fix the stupid joystick... I've noticed that the joystick 'nob' (the bit dat u move with ur thumb) is part of a semi-see-thru piece of plastic. This plastic completely covers the whole keypad + softkey area of the phone, that is, all the keys sit on top of this plastic. In theory there should be no dust getting into the actual joystick component which is underneath the plastic.
I've sprayed the joystick bit under the plastic with some VCD head cleaner (stuff dat evaporates completely) seems to fix it for a few days but after that the stick becomes unresponsive once again. So obviously dirt is getting in there sumhow...
/edit
I just turned the 'key sound' on and i've noticed exactly wat the above post said. Its definitely a firmware problem. When i move the joystick in the menu or anywhere else a tone is heard but the 'highlight' doesn't move. This shows that the hardware is registering a joystick movement but the software just wont do it... weird. How can dis bug even exist?

Same problem here. I've noticed on some occasions, the phone even remembers you pressed down and if you press it down again, the cursor goes down twice. It's true though that sometimes it doesn't do anything. Maybe it skips checking the keyboard buffer on some occasions?

I 'massage' mine in a circular motion with my thumb as it gives me troubles. It works OK afterwards. Press the centre, hold, and 'massage' it! Nice. Really.
Posted by Red_Rach
If its a firmware problem then why does blowing the dust away or massaging the joystick fix the problem?
I have the latest firmware but this was a problem on my original software as well.

HOW MANY BLOODY NEW THREADS ARE THERE GOING TO BE ABOUT THIS SAME SUBJECT!?!!?
IT'S DUST!!
REMEDY: SPRAY SOME WD40 ON A FLATTENED END OF A COTTON BUD, GO AROUND THE JOYSITCK, AND GET UNDERNEATH IT AS MUCH AS YOU CAN. PROBLEM SOLVED. PROCESS MAY NEED REPEATING EVERY 2 MONTHS OR SO.
WHOEVER THINKS ITS A FIRMWARE ISSUE, NEEDS A SLAP.

Its ridiculous we have to do this though. You pay a lot of money for a phone and have to clean the dust because of a defect? Its a joke, very disapointing.

Agreed its a pain. But however good you think a phone is, you upgrade to it, there's always gonna be something to piss you off about it. No phone is perfect.
Also, those cans of compressed air you mentioned earlier, ain't all that effective.
Posted by Red_Rach
Damn, so I'm going to have to use WD40? That stuff is really greasy
Posted by xan K
mine also does the same thing, down and left joystick are sometimes unresponsive. I wouldn't totally rule out the software possibility. Sometimes it's working perfect then it's a total mess. one is certain for me: this was my LAST
joystick phone. no more!
Posted by Daisun
Guys, turn the 'key sound' on and you will see that when the joystick appears to be unresponsive it still makes a sound. Now if this was a hardware problem why would the phone still make a sound when the joystick is pressed?
Posted by maccad
can i just say that this was the reason i got a w850i, I've now had a t610, k750 and both have had the joystick mess up on me. I've had them repaired both times before the warranty was up but it will only be a while till it goes again. Getting rid of the stupid joystick was the best thing SE did on the w810 and w850 and should be made standard through the range.
with the sounds thing i reckon the software is programmed to register the joystick being pressed in one direction for so long as a movement as to prevent accidental directions and if there's a dust it means only a very short movement is made so it isn't long enough to signal a movement but just enough to make a sound or stop the cursor blinking in texts.
ban the joystick or fix it i say

I had similar problems with the joystick with my k700. Something actually did happen when you moved the joystick, but not what you wanted, e.g, moving joystick down and it behaved like when it was pressed, thus, a key sound, but not the expected action. Still, this is definitely a hardware problem. I'm not convinced that it is caused by dust, the contacts and the switch inside the joystick may very well be broken or (as with my k700) worn-out.
Posted by Daisun
@maccad
Wat? that dun even make sense.. why would they make it so that the sound would play when the press wasn't long enough to register a movement? I'm not an expert but i do know how to program and making the sound and menu movements respond to seperate joystick movements is not only slightly harder but also illogical.
/edit i'm refering to the times when the key sound plays but the highlight in the menu doesn't move at all.
There are other times when sound doesn't play and the highlight doesn't move. I think there is both a hardware and firmware problem...

Come'on guys! Get real!
Switching the key sound on, does not prove anything else than that the joystick delivers input - NOT in which direction it does so!
Enter the service menu (right * left left * left *), chose service tests, and keyboard.
My guess is you'll see that the joystick delivers an left-down or right-down input when moving it down (if down is your problem).
The main menu and sms editor (amongst others) only accepts the excact direction (left/right/up/down), and not derivates (diagonals).
That's what's bugging your phones - and it is of course caused by dust! Which, by the way, might as well be from _inside_ the joystick due to mechanical wear.
The joystick is crappy quality!

This issue was already brought some time ago !! After similar problems encountered with the K750, how come SE keeps repeating the same mistakes ?? Why not having a D-pad like the W810 ??
Posted by shaliron
So much for the 'improved design'. SE really need to get their act together. I also, am never buying an SE with a joystick again. It's just too much hassle for expensive phones.
If you are going to have a joystick, make it sealed tightly! I can't see how it can be that hard. And the simple way out is to just put d-pads on everything.
Otherwise, I want to see a PSP joystick on an SE phone. That would be dust-resistant.
Posted by chadiwrx
This is my last SE phone. I have had enough of this crappy joystick problems. First it was the K700 then the K750 & now K800. Thanks but no thanks SE. Never again.
Posted by Del
Thats why I have gone back to using my S700, I have never had a problem with the d pad on that and its 2 years old.
My K750 joystick is stuffed now, it has got so bad that you can not send texts properly or make calls properly via the phone book.
I'm so glad I never rushed out and bought a K800 when it first came out.

Mine also has problems with left and down movement

Er, you need to use the joystick for those movements, right? If the joystick is broken, you can't. That's what was the problem with my K700.
Posted by Red_Rach
The sound dosnt proove any input it just proves that you are moving the joystick left. The dust obviously prevents the joystick from responding movement wise.
It is a dust problem, but its annoying. If it was a firmware problem everyone would have this fault.

YEAH!! YOU TELL 'EM RED_RACH!!!

LOL
Something I have noticed is that the joystick works fine with certain games. Tennis for instance and Golf. Very weird indeed.
I think I'll try cleaning my joystick tonight anyway.
Posted by Rajjy
That tennis game is unbelievably difficult!!!!!!!!!

My K800i is brand new !! the joystic is NOT responding well " down " and i guess its either construction problem or firmware !!! no dust bullshit .. lol . ... cause my phone is BRAND NEW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by Nastyd
They said the same about my k750i.. That it is dust... But I don't think that could be right.
I unscrewed the cover and removed the keypad so I could see the joystick better. What I noticed was that it's just like a switch (you can't see that good because its internal).. So I can't see why it should be dust that causes this problem. What can dust do to block a switch...
WD40 can't go all the way in there (because its internal) so that shouldn't do anything. And I think that that also counts for dust... :/
Go ahead and flame me if you want.. that's just what I think.
BTW: notice how many people got this problem with "Down" pressing. I don't think dust is that smart to just #@%! it up for the down button.

i have this problem with my w800i but only sometimes. it works perfect and then suddenly the up or left and right sticks. down is fine though.
Posted by Red_Rach
WD40 does the trick with a cotton bud, I just tried it. So until it needs doing again hurrah!
Of course dust can stop the joystick working, it affects the contacts. The joystick is not protected from dust and therefore its obviously a fault even though SE claimed they had fixed this problem.
Once I fix the screen on my W800i I'm going to try the WD40 trick on that too.
Posted by nirmalv
Guys this problem with the joystick is neither a firmware nor a hardware fault. It is a fault with the the angle of your joystick press.Keep the joystick sound on and try pressing at a slighlty different angle. The press is registered but the menu movement does not take place. The problem is that this is a full 8 axis joystick with 4 switches registering 8 movements. Most games register all the axis movements(thats why they work well).By default our wrong keystroke presses are more possible with the left and down movements(thats just the way our thumb works !!)

the cause of the joystick can be for many resons , myn fixed itself lol

Hi all,
I was today at Sony Ericsson Service point at Sony Ericsson headquarter in Lund in Sweden ..
I was asking about the problem with the joystic and slow menus in K800i .. first they removedformated the whole excisting firmware from it (which already was the latest one but downloaded and installed from SEUS) .. then installed again the latest firmware which they provied .. it took about 15 minutes while i was drinking cofe the phone was ready to be used ..
I noticed different as the service point man told me about before the update, the different is faster menus and better joystic reaction .. and they told me the phones get abit slower when we use SEUS ..
I am telling that, just for information for some people who complain on slower menus and bad joystic reaction ..
Thanks
Posted by night_66
Ooh .. by the way
I was telling the service point man about the dust which can come in under the joystic and disturb it function .. he showed me another older K800i without the front, and i saw there is a big washer under the joystic and the main buttoms which not allow any dust to come under.. !!
So dont think about dust no more in K800i .. its a firmware problem actually .. and it could be ILLEGAL firmwares as well ..

HOW THE BLOODY HELL CAN IT BE ILLEGAL FIRMWARE WHEN PEOPLE WHO HAVE GOT THE PHONE BRAND NEW ARE EXPERIENCING THIS PROBLEM, AND THE WD40 SOLUTION FIXES IT??? THERE ARE AT LEAST TWO OTHER THREADS ON ESATO THAT MENTION THE UNRESPONSIVENESS OF THE JOYSTICK AND HOW WD40 CURES IT. HAVE ALL THESE PEOPLE GOT ILLEGAL FIRMWARE? I GOT MY PHONE FROM ORANGE. HAVE THEY SOLD ME A PHONE WITH ILLEGAL FIRMWARE? NO!!! ITS BLOODY CRUD UNDERNEATH THE JOYSTICK!!! READ THE OTHER TWO THREADS!!! OF COURSE SE AREN'T GOING TO ADMIT TO A DESIGN FLAW IN THEIR PHONES. ***END OF THREAD***

Why you get so angry and nervious when you talk about such things ??
I was telling what i went through ! and the guy at service point showed me everything !! he explained where the problem is !! so be nice and calm down ..
We are here just to exchange informations and knowldge ..
Thanks ..

Yo Rajjy stfu. No one cares about your CAPS LOCK replies and how fast you want to close a thread because a cause is found.
Nothing wrong with people posting about similar problems, were just talking here... it is a forums btw.
Posted by Rajjy
Your both right. I apologise for my agressive posts.
Posted by Red_Rach
If the firmware update fixes the problem then why do I still have it when I have the latest firmware? and why has WD40 fixed this problem?
The joystick issue is a long standing problem with Sony Ericsson phones and it dosnt look like they are coming any closer to fixing it.
Posted by Rajjy
I've had the T68i, T610 and K700i before my current phone, the K800i.... I've never suffered from any unresponisve joystick issues until the K800i.
Weird innit?
Check out this previous thread that discussed the same problem...

why can you just but a phone without joysticks if you don't want to go through this kind of problems?
Posted by Rajjy
Most of the time people don't know about the glitches until they've got the phone and experienced the problems for themselves.
Besides, the K800i was the best thing available at the time I got mine.
Posted by night_66
I was talking today to my friend, he works with Sony Ericsson at the department they work with joystics and keypads ..
He said, there is NO hardware problem at all with the joystic, the main problem comes from the firmware/software of the phone which is not that well done to match the construction of the joystic ! thats why they are having problems !!
and he even told me one more again, if any dust comes inside the place there the joystic placed .. it will NOT get inside and disturb the mecanism of it .. the dust comes above the washer ... not under it ..
its looks like the automatic gear of cars .. if the software is bad .. the changes between the steps will be wrong or bad ..
And once more again, my K800i is brand new .. and i use a good bag to safe it from any dusts .. but the joystic is not responding well as i want .. so i cannot be any dust inside .. right ?
Posted by Rajjy
Night_66, I've just literally this minute tried to download the lateste firmware from the SE website, to my K800i, and it said I already had it (bought the phone in July this year), yet i still get intermittement unresponsiveness in downward direction. Yet the WD40 makes the joystick feel as good as new. How does your friend explain that?
Posted by Red_Rach
Same here rajjy. I have the latest firmware and still have this problem. This has been a problem with all joystick phones although i only experienced it with the w800 and k800.
