Replacing the screen of a Sony Ericsson W800i

Basically, i took my phone out of my pocket having just been throwing a ball around, and the LCD screen on my W800i has cracked and the top 3/5ths of the screen is now all messed up. I suspect my chances of having it replaced are slim to none, as I went to The Link today and the guy says that warranty doesn't cover accidental damage - fair enough, i guess.

So what i was wondering is if you guys could tell me how easy it is to disassemble a SE W800i and replace the screen.
I'm fairly decent with a screwdriver, and i basically have nothing to lose, so unless hardcore welding or something is involved i'll happily do it. You can get screens on ebay for about £25-£30, or i could get a faulty W800 for a similar price. So I reckon it'd be worth attempting.

So people...thoughts, suggestions, tips? All welcome.

Cheers in advance

Marcus

It's easy peasy!

Done it many a time on K750is and W800is. All you need is a T6 Torx screwdriver, and preferably one of those little plastic spatula-shaped phone opening tools, both of which you can get for about a fiver all in off ebay, probably less!

There's two screws to undo under the battery at the bottom of the phone, then lift off the front facia (using the opening tool - using a screwdriver could damage the facia), then two more screws to undo at the top of the phone holding the screen in. Also pull off the joystick top carefully. You need to take out the keypad pcb, which involves disconnecting the connector at the bottom of the phone and lifting it out. Then simply disconnect the old screen, lift it out, pop your new screen in, connect it up, replace the keypad pcb (making sure it's plugged in properly), put the screws back in for the screen, put it all back together again and you should have a working phone again!

Shouldn't take more than 5-10 minutes, and no soldering/heavy welding involved! Definately worth doing.

Note: please don't sue me if it goes wrong, all done at your own risk!

Sweet, so no more difficult than putting together a computer. I took apart my old T610, and it worked afterwards, but i was young and foolish.

I shall order all the necessary parts, thanks a lot for your reassuring advice. Much appreciated.

perhaps advisable to wear thin rubber gloves if you will be nervous (clean ones) . This is since sweat can get on the contacts (ribbon) of the LCD and cause it to not work or only display white! this problem can be a bugger to resolve, but easily avoided with a bit of common sense.

how does one resolve it?

Bump? My ipod has that exact problem from when i replaced the screen, and if you could help me out i would really appreciate it.

Glad you've gotten it sorted. It's always nice when you hear that something like this has gone well and you have a happy ending!
