Ethical Question: 2 K750is (Warning: long)

Before I begin, I'd like to say I love SE!

Hi, I had a K700i. It's joystick was having some problems so I sent it in to Sony Ericsson. Bad move on my part. Took them months to "start repairs" on the phone. Then, after telling me it was being "worked on" for a few weeks, they tell me the "screen is damaged" and "probably occurred during shipping" and is not covered under the warranty. ..

What? You guys have been working on a few weeks and have just noticed the screen is damaged? And it's going to cost me $100, only a little less than the amount for a new K700i, for you to fix it? I think not. I wrote a firm, yet polite letter to which they sent me a brand new K750i. Very nice, huh? Not really. About three months later (Where are they shipping these phones from? Mars?!?):

The new K750i kept telling me "Insert Correct SIM Card." After a quick look through the Service Menu, I realized it was locked; to a carrier in England, while I was using Cingular in the US! And they knew I was using Cingular. So I wait 2 weeks for them to get the unlock code from Orange. Then it starts to work, meaning I can actually use my phone. Well, everything but making and receiving calls.

Now it said "Emergency Calls Only". That means exactly what it sounds like. I can call 911. Yeah, that'll be great.

"911 Operator, what do you need assistance with?"
"Uh, can you tell my mom I need to stay after-school today?"
"Sure!"

[/unnecessary sarcasm]

Being a noob I was, I thought the phone itself was defective or something. So I called Sony Ericsson and explained my problem. I send my phone in. Fast-forward 1 1/2 months later.

Yeah, my phone came in! Except that it's volume keys are jammed and only half the keyboard works. Guess what? I send it in again.

Get a working phone this time, except that it still says Emergency Calls Only. I call them and they say the Antenna might be defective so I send it in, YET AGAIN. Phone comes back. Guess what? E.M.O. is still there!

So I start to look up some stuff on this. And I learn that Cingular uses the 850Mhz band, a band that this phone, NOR THE K700i, has. What is up with that? My K700i, which is tri-band, works great on Cingular, but this phone, which is also tri-band, has no reception with Cingular. Whatta ya know?

Sony Ericsson must've missed out on the memo that Cingular uses the 850Mhz band or something before giving me this phone. Yet, all the blame cannot be put on SE. I should have researched a bit more before sending it in 3 times. So now I have a K750i which gets splotchy reception in a town 30 miles away and no reception in my home town.

Great MP3 player, btw. Nice camera, as well. Anyways, 3 months AFTER I got my phone (the one I am currently using) I get another K750i. So now I have two. What oh what should I do? Could there be an increase of reception with the new phone? Is it ethical for me to even try to check it's reception? Or should I just return the new one and imagine this never happened? There are some slightly unethical things I could do. The one I have been using is CID49, meaning no mods! But if this new one is CID36, well, then.

I have yet to call them (Should I?)...Just looking for some suggestions.

Yet again, I love SE, just had a lot of problems with them. Not all of them SE's fault, necessarily, but to put it bluntly: A few weeks and it will mark the one year anniversary of sending in my K700i, so it's been one year without a working cell phone.

Thanks!

OK, now this is hilarious. I actually was messing with the phone and I realized the volume button was stuck! They sent me the old phone and guess what the sheet said that came with it?

"Sorry, we cannot repair this phone. It is out of warranty."

Well, I would argue that it was technically new and it was defective when received, but they already sent me a new one! Wonder what I should do with it. Any suggestions? I'll probably call them tomorrow or something.

@ibrahim - I sympthize with your dilemma back there mate . . . it was really a long story and you've encountered a looooot of hardships just to have a nice working fone. My advise here is that: next time try . . . Nokia, might be less hassle when processing under warranty fones . . . Good Luck still !

W810i

I've thought about Nokia, but their Quad-Band lineup isn't too much better than SE's...I've gotten used to SE, but I'll look into them.

W810i: The phone that I should've gotten....

that is really bad

why

Why don't you sell off the 2 k750 and get a w810? Or maybe ask SE to exchange them!

Posted by ikjadoon
I might just sell them. Going to call in a few minutes, I'll tell you what happens!

Called them.Well, I tried with my K750i but the rep on the other end had trouble understanding me so I switched to a land line. Anyways, they just said that I should send the new one back...Off to the post office then!

I tried on last attempt at fix for the reception issue, but nothing. I mean, technically the phone is doing everything it is supposed to, but I went from a working K700i to a worthless K750i. Times like this, I miss my K700i, even with a 30MB memory and a .3MP camera.

True. This is the perfect scenario of having a perfect phone which does not work in your area (GSM). Which means it's not a phone - it's a multimedia device!

Just get a W810, problem solved!

Posted by ikjadoon
Yeah, like I said it's got a great MP3 player and a kick-a$$ camera. I'll probably be putting my K750i up for sale in a short time, unless CID49 modding can be finalized and I can change the GDFS GSM band variable to the W810i's..

Well, I got a W810i last night. Fricking awesome phone, and guess what? I can make phone calls. Yeah, it DOES feel good to do that! Shame is that it's branded, but CID49 is cracked and soon I will get my menu back!
