Hi all, just a quick shout to see if anyone knows what could be wrong with the phone

K800i, bought new off ebay 6 weeks ago, never given me any problems until 2 days ago. It wills send and receive texts as well as hit the web all ok, also will connect to 3G network.

What I can't do however is make any calls, in or out. When I try to call out I get a single beep then a short error type of sound and the phone hangs up.
Ringing my phone from a land line for example and I get the message 'sorry there is a fault'. If I call my number when the phone is off, it goes straight to answer phone. My sim in a friends phone, works fine, his sim in my phone, same faults as I get.

I've done a soft reset, hard reset, and finally a factory reset.

Please I don't want to send the bugger to Sony as I'll have to buy a pay and go until it gets back!!

EDIT: Vodafone BTW, software -CXC1250210 - R1CB001 - 060608

It's on Vodafone, and I presume you are are too?

I'm afraid it sounds like blocked, Vodafone and T-Mobile sims will still call and it seems go online, but won't accept calls when put in a blocked phone. Try putting an O2 or Orange sim in, you'll probably find then the phone will say 'invalid sim', or 'invalid mobile' if it's blacklisted.

I bet the previous seller has reported it lost or stolen, perhaps an insurance scam, or the phone itself has been stolen!

Sorry to be the bringer of bad news here, can't think what else it could be. The only thing I could suggest is to contact the seller and query it with them. Could be an honest mistake, could be something more sinister!

Cheers man - well that does sound like it could be the case ominously :/ I shall have to see what the seller says. I asked him for a proof of purchase and he said 'send it back with a fiver to cover postage and I'll sort it out' but I asked for documents instead as it would be easier, he's asked for the IMEI so I'm awaiting a response.

I shall see what other SIMS do if I try them in this phone!

Right I tried an Orange Sim - says "Inactive Sim" - any ideas?

Cheers all

'inactive sim' - sounds certainly like it's blocked! So the seller has been in contact then?

Just rang Vodafone to ask if they could check the IMEI . . . .

. . . . . black listed . . .grrrrrrr

Anyone any ideas what to do about this? It's O2 branded, can they do it? Can I pay someone is Oxford Street to hack it?

Cheers All

Nope, you can't.

If the IMEI is blocked then that's it for that handset.

Can't be used again.

Correct me if I'm wrong, people.

Contact eBay, the police and if you paid by credit card/PayPal them too, giving details. You should be able to get your money back if you paid by credit card/PayPal. It should help your case if you kept a copy of your correspondence with the seller regarding it not working, which should show you bought it in good faith.

If you paid cash then you'll have to accept the money has gone and you've got a useless phone out of it; your only consolation should be that, if you've given the police a name and address they should get their man !

You probably can get the IMEI changed, but as that's illegal in the UK no-one should give you details as to how to do it.

It would be helpful if Vodafone could determine whether the person who got it disabled was the person who sold it to you or someone else - if the former then by showing you bought it legitimately 6 weeks before it was cut off it was disconnected fraudulently as you are the legal owner and only you should be able to get it disconnected. If the latter then you've probably been sold a stolen phone.

Sigh.

I've never broken my rule of ONLY paying by paypal until this phone, and that's only because I didn't see that it was cash only.... yes I did drop cashin his bank . . . . reported this to ebay now to see what happens.

On a side note - yes I know it's ilegal but otherwise I've dropped £220 on a brick so PM me pls chaps

I'm not sure what to do now - I could always get a spares or repair, smashed screem K800i and try and hybridise them I suppose.

Reckon I could appeal to O2?

Right I need some advice please people.

I started an ebay dispute with the guy and he's adamant that it's not stolen, he didn't steal it etc. He wants me to send him the phone and he'll send me out a new one 'as it takes a while to contact the original owner and get this sorted'

What do you think I should do?

On one hand he does have over 1300 positive feedback, no Negs at all and has been communicative. I also have his name, address and phone number.

On the other hand, both O2 and Vodafone have told me it's suspended as reported 'lost or stolen', O2 say the block can be removed but only by the original buyer.

Help!!

Cheers all.

Hmmm, sounds like a reputable seller/trader so could be a genuine problem. Did he state where he got it from, he could be someone a bit like me who buys damaged/faulty phones then sells them on, could be that it was whoever owned the phone before him (unless this trader you got it off bought it new) pulling a fast one. I'd try to clarify whether he has had the phone from new, or if he's gotten it from someone else, i.e. in your possession the phone is now 'third-hand'.

I'd be tempted to say take him up on that offer, have you a link to his feedback profile? Could well be someone I've dealt with before!

Cheers Sammy - well that's what I'm thinking - I mean this *could* be legit, but I'm not inclined to trust twice, considering this one 'appears' to have been nicked.

anyway this is the guy:

Does anyone know him?

Not dealt with him but you'd hopefully be OK, with that feedback he'b be wanting to avoid his 1st neg i bet!

Hi Tetsugaku-San

Firstly by the look of this guys feedback and the fact you have had the phone for 6 weeks i would imagine it came as of much as a surprise to him as it was for you.

Can you prove that you have had this phone for 6 weeks and have made and received calls on it, are you contract or PAYG customer? Whoever has now reported it lost or stolen is committing fraud whilst thinking they are being clever. Personally if the seller wants the phone back just insist that once received he will send you a new one as it is not your fault someone has reported it lost or stolen and had it blocked and as you bought the phone from him he must sort it out not you. Good luck and i hope it all gets sorted quickly.

I'm in exactly the same position with a P990 (Voda) ... have sent back to seller (different guy from above posts) - replacement fone expected today !
Suspect that both of these are a genuine mistake rather than the seller trying to defraud (generally you wouldnt get good coms and them to have excellent feedback) .... if it all goes pear shaped at least I have Paypal 'warranty' to call back on (which works - I've used this b4).

Think EMEI blocked phones work outside the UK ? ... can seel on Ebay international as a last resort (altho I've sent my fone back to the seller now !)

good luck

i dont know thsi guy but it could have been a 'found' phone which was assumed un-blocked... judging by his responses and feedback id send it back especially if you get an address etc..

And you can change the IMEI number on phones but its illegal.... and i dont know how to do it before i get a PM

Thanks for all your help everyone

Yep I am going to send back this one, and just cross my fingers I suppose . . .. Thing is I was so angry the day I found out that I bought another one off ebay that should be arriving in a mo....

... just arrived as I typed - the silly postman left it on the doorstep with no signiture!!!! bloody fool

Anyway I'll keep you guys informed when (if) I get the other phone back, if I end up with a spare, my mum is getting a better christmas present than I planned . . . . .

Posted by jack77777
did you try flashing the k800i with the latest firmware ? sounds stupid but just wondered lol

Posted by Sammy_boy
Firmware flashing sadly doesn't fix a blocked phone!

Posted by jack77777
oh well

Posted by snoop69
If you send it back you have no evidence!

If he sends you a replacement & that dies in 6 weeks time what will
you do?

You cant report him for the 1st phone because that will be gone & he will
play innocent on the 2nd one!

If the phone is still under contract or the original owner has reported it
stolen then you are handling stolen goods.

Posted by Tetsugaku-San
Well it looks like my replacement actually arrived! I have to get home and check the thing actually works first, but I've been told a box arrived via special delivery of the right shape so I should be ok . . . I wonder if it's the same one that's been reprogrammed?

Anyway I don't care if it is TBH, or if it is nicked. The one that first arrived was mint, new in box so if it was nicked it was nicked off a pallette not some poor bugger in the street.

Shall jump up and down for joy should it all be ok

Shame I already bought a vodafone branded replacement - god the Vodafone one is rubbish - all the buttons are screwed up! takes twice as many presses to make a call now Shall give it to my mum for christmas if I can keep them both, little more than I planned to spend but she needs a good camera

Thanks for everybodys help, advice and suggestions - this is a very informative forum

Such phones that are blocked in the uk can they be used abroad? you can send it here in cyprus if you want !

Basically i dont understand why police block the phones, before they get the thiefs. Just track the numbers that are dialled and then block the phone. When police block a phone, then you may say...bye bye phone. Or is it not legal yet to do such a thing?

@haris_el :
The police doesn't block phones, the phone company does, after the owner has reported it has been stolen.

A ok, in my country Cyprus, you have to report it to the police that your phone is stolen , and then with their indication the phone is blocked. It is obvious that the phone company blocks the SIM card.

BY the way did they start looking for thiefs that are using phones stolen in the UK abroad? I remember a couple of people in the UK when i was studying ; were " losing " their phone in order to get a new one from their insurance company, and then they took their "lost" one back to their countries...
