don't have a w950 but i think to check the firmware, try:
*/\\*\\/\\/*\\/*
where /\\ = scroll side wheel up
\\/ = scroll side wheel down
give it a try and see.

I just spoke with 02 Customer Services and they tell me that the W950i will not be available until January 15th. Can anyone confirm this?
And what are the compelling reasons for getting the W950i over an M600 with a couple of memory cards. Not that the M600 is available on O2 yet either...
Posted by mrmilo69
The W950i is available from e2save and onestopphoneshop on the o2 network. Does anyone have any ideas when it'll hit orange as i want to take advantage of the good text tarifffs and the free broadband

@Swag / Ribbler / Whiteshadows
Can you confirm the battery is the same as the one that comes with P990, that is, 950 Mah and not 900 Mah/
Posted by Ribbler
Yes its the same one.

Well I'm happy. I got mine yesterday (one of only six that came in at one of the o2 Oxford Street branches) and it's brilliant. A proper organiser that syncs well.
It has a bunch of try before you buy software with it, but when you go to look at the compatibility charts for the application they list only P990 and M600 as compatible. I'm confused.
But the software package does include the quick office demo, so I'll give it a go later and see how it works.

The W950 is now " available " on the orange website. But it's out of stock

im just wonderin why all the w950i that i've seen are made in china. i know it doesn't make any difference but im just wonderin since its a smartphone as well like the Pseries and m6 which were made in france. Also, the ones i've seen looks as if their batteries are fake. i mean, we get the usual bst-33's made in some kind of metal/aluminum finish while the one suppled with the w950i looks just like silver sticker around the battery. anyone noticed this?
Posted by Buttoneer
Mine is a proper aluminium case for the battery, with a silver sticker with the data informations on it.

the pouch makes the phone look rele sik like the Samsung p300 the one that looks like a calculator congratz man

Has yours got any o2 branding on it? Hows the keypad? How much did you get it for on what line? Hows it performing?
Posted by Buttoneer
No o2 branding but o2 active is default website, £99 upgrade with online 100 tariff (£25 per month) but I've had to phone them for a 3g sim card in order to use the 3g functionality, and the keypad is OK but not great as it feels a little indefinite to me.
I'll try and set up the voice dialling for most things, which should help.
Unbelievable functionality overall. I wasn't expecting the video facilities etc.

The phone is out now, not 15th January (i wish o2 would update their site!)
Seen in a Carphone Warehouse and fondled by me....
its a gorgeous screen , video is 30 f/ps
the pouch is a Great addition, but the screen is massive compared to my k800i
i didn't find the menu laggy at all. its quite response (as are most sony phones)
the sound is quite loud as well on the phones external speaker
Posted by mrmilo69
Excuse my ignorance but where does the stylus for the W950 live? does it slot into the actual phone, or is it just jangling in your pocket?
Posted by davidandrews
as your holding it, it fits into the top left hand side of the phone
very neatly as well.....
Mine is in the post from O2, i can do a load of photographs if you guys want
Posted by mrmilo69
Thanks for the quick reply, i was just wondering mind you i doubt it would have stopped me getting it.

According to the desctruction leaflet, the pouch is for the handfree set, not the phone. I have used it for the phone anyway, but there is one fairly major problem with that. The pouch is well padded and either serves to muffle the sound of your ringtone or dampen the vibrate alert if it is your pocket. It's not great if you're walking along a busy road, for example.
Another minor annoyance is the silent appointment alarm vibrates on and on for ages. It started going off on the way into work this moring, notifying me of an upcoming meeting, which I knew about and which I didn't really need reminding about, but it kept going for ages.

The W950 is in stock on orange, free on all contracts £55 a month and over.
Posted by samsong
CPW have loads available, that where I got mine.
Posted by litepurple
CPW don't do o2's own tariffs, which IMO offer better value.
I'm going to see what deals Orange has as I'm out of contract I did want to get it on Voda, but I have no idea when they'll be releasing it - and everytime I ask them, I appear to get a different answer.
Posted by litepurple
I spoke to Orange customer retentions who said it's only been released for new customers at the moment, and it will take another couple of weeks for it to be tested further before it's released on upgrades! They obviously value older customers more then

I've had this thing since Friday now and the one thing that's puzzling me is the strange battery life.
It seems that if you have the walkman software running, even if you're not actually playing a track, it drains the battery. Fast. There's clearly a lot of power buzzing between the memories somewhere.
Not likely to last a long weekend without a charge, IMO.

Has anyone found Blackberry Connect software for the W950i ?
Posted by davidandrews
HI There
Disturbing about the battery ...
this phone is supposed to be the best phone on the market on accounts of its battery life being so good!
Posted by Buttoneer
I think the battery life is supposed to be excellent when the phone functions are off.
It could just be that the power meter is innaccurate - it wouldn't be the first time. The same thing happened with my K750 though. If I left it on the media player, even if it wasn't playing, the power used to drain heavily.

Just acquired a W950 from O2. Its great, very little branding and if you switch off Transitions its very quick. Memory leaks seem less of an issue. Will back-up, Master Reset, restore to see if performance gets even better and will try an SEUS upgrade as well. For business use I would recommend the M600 over the W950.

I have a p990 and am pleased wiv it but was wondering if any1 recommend buying a w950 to replace a p990.
i love my music
i already have web n walk so no need for wifi
i hardly use my camera on the p990
i love the look of the w950
i like the fact that the w950 is much thinner
or would u lot just suggest i buy a 4gb pro duo?thanks

Hi guys i just tried out a w950i from showroom and i almost fell in love with the phone but for its volume which is very low . it is extremly quiet through the ext speakers (though clear) and through the hpm-70 the sound is only 60% that of w800i or w810i (30% of N91) . the volume was set at max and eq at Loudness but still it was quiet . more over i could not find nay way to set our own equalizers but to choose from the many preset options (contrary to what is stated by Eldar at mobile-review.com . Is this again a part of European regulation ?! Sound Pressure ?! AVLS !!! . Is the walkman 2.0 player going to have such a low volume level . Any w950i users who have compared it to the sound of ist gen walkmans please throw some light ? Also how is the w850i ?
Posted by Whiteshadows
One of the cons of this phone is that it has no WIFI!!

W950i
Stylish and slim pda type 3G music phone from SE.
One of the best in the line of walkman phones from SE.
Crisp display, full of feature and easy to use, this are the pros of the new W905i.
Users and buyers should see that this is an music phone, made for listening music and maybe replacing (as in my case) some mp3 players....
Personally i use it in my car, connected via an cass adapter to my cars radio.
The sound is imho better or equally to that of my iPod 5G (video).
Also the look and feel of the "walkman 2.0" is way better than the interface of the iPod....i wrote the look...NOT the easy of use!
I own now 4 phones from SE: K800i;W850i;W950i and P990i.
From all 4 i like the W950i more...but the W80i comes really close in all terms.
Surely, all 4 are verry different phones and cant be compared for real one with other...
I can highly recommand the W950i, it´s a marvelouse piece of hardware!!!
BRAVO SONY (SE).
PS. imho this phone is a real SONY development, not an SE.
Posted by nemo66
@nirmal
The volume control in W950i has a combined slider control.
U can slide the multimedia volume and the general volume.
Try both sliders, sure it will not blow ur ears away
But listening through earphones or an amplifier the volume is surely OK.
Only on the loudspeaker of the phone it may be not so loud as on other phones (ROKR, N73...)

The sound quality reproduction on the W950 is staggering. Best quality is obtained with the DS970. Sound volume seems to be an issue for some members - but remember it does depend on how you encode the music. I use DbPowerAmp and 192kbps encoding and the volume is fine for me and I travel on the London tube! Please don't discount the W950 just on the grounds of volume. Also this is a sophisticated device and you need to use it for e week before you appreciate all the features so a demo in a shop is not really representative of what this device is capable of.

Hi Jah,
Congratulations on your new toy, i have to admit i am really impressed with the HBH-DS970 and also find the volume very loud @75% on the M600
but can you confirm the equaliser is user definable or is it presets only? Also have you tried adding the Office and pdf viewers yet and is it true it will only sync Calendar, notes and tasks not e-mail?
Marc

@Dogmann
quick response.
1. Equalizer, Loudness and Treble boost available which change the equaliser but you can't change the equaliser manually
2. Docs to Go works fine haev not tried PDF+ viewer. I assume if you want Quick Office you'll need to buy a copy etc
Email - will try it later but email is available as an option in sync setup for PC Suite when connected to the W950. PIM data does sync as expected.
Posted by Dogmann
Hi Jah,
Many thanks for your quick response the sync options i quoted where from the SE site and i just found it strange to say the least. So from what you have said the M600 equaliser is the same as for the W950, so what exactly is the difference between the the Music player and the Walkman player bar the icons as i for one am confused admittedly that's not too difficult just now.
Marc

@Dogmann
the W950 is a music Smartphone and it has buttons, controls etc on the phone that work with the Wlakman s/w. The Walkman s/w also is much more visual and interesting. Also the wheel is used for selecting tracks etc. BUT the big difference is the sound quality. If you really like very good sound quality get the W950 but if you happy with MP3s encoded at 64kbps etc then stick to the M600 - its good enough for most people. Personally I love the overall design and integration of the W950 and I am very fussy about music quality...

Key Lock
If u hold the Back button (on left side) more than 3 seconds than the keyboard on the phone will be locked.
Unlock the same way!
