Sony Ericsson W950i Discussion

Had a quick go on the w950 keypad in the shop and struggled a lilttle with it. Pressing a button the way I normally press one, I was pressing 3-4 keys. I had to use the tip of my thumb exactly on the number to get one correct press. It does seem to me like theres gaps under the plastic and that a sharp object might penetrate through. Should be fine I think though im not entirely sure I want to get used to it. Personally, I feel SE should have used normal buttons, this keypad doesn't really bring anything new, just more difficulty.

Hi Jah
Thanks for the quick reply . But general volume and multimedia volume dont add up - do they ? I appreciate the sound quality but even through the ds970 which i own its volume is lower than k790i . Sound fidelity is also better of with k790i as it has custom equalizers . I love hearing my music really loud and crystal clear - that is why i liked the n91 , but it has hard drive problems that is more than annoying . By the way i always encode at 192kbps and above (mp4 VBR ) . Also which is the best eq preset on the w950i according to you ? Have anybody who have used the w810i tried the 950i and compared the volume . may be its my firmware version .

Posted by Jah
@nirmal

I have a K800 for comparison, which I know is louder than the P990 & M600. But volume is a personal preference. I can't run the W950 + DS970 above 80% volume as it would hurt my ears! Will compare the W950 and K800 and report back.

@londonlad123

Slowly getting used to the keys.

Hi Jah,
I have all my music for the M600 encoded @192kpbs using Disc2Phone i have not turned on Megabass and have left it on default equaliser settings. As i said i find the quality excellent via the HBH-DS970's and control Music or calls via it so the extra buttons and functionality are wasted on me but thanks for the feed back. I really must pop into CPW pop my M2 in and check it through my headset and see what the difference is.

Hi jah
Thanx but u dint answer my first question - does the multimedia volume and general volume add up to increase the overall volume ? Also just tell me which is louder through ds970 - k790i or w950i ? Also i have found that through hpm-70 the k790i lacks bass totally(even with the latest firmware) . have u had this observation ? its not a problem with the headset as it works fine with w810i and has very punchy bass .

Posted by Jah
@nirmal
I have posted elsewhere that the connector on the HMP-82 is better than on the HMP-70 and does make a difference in sound quality (e.g. bass clarity), the best sound quality is via DS970, but obviously these are limited for bass reproduction. Will answer other questions later

Posted by flameboy35
just wanna ask...do w950 have the video ringtone like the k800?

Posted by Jah
@nirmal

Okay rest of the answers

1. There is only one volume control
2. Just as loud as the K800

With "Smile" by Lilly Allen I can't go over 80% volume as its just too loud (encoded with DBPowerAmp in MP3 at 192kbps)

Just ordered mine from Orange. I was going to leave and go to Voda but they offered me £25 pm for 500xnet, 500 texts, 12 month contract and handset free of charge. That's a much better deal than I've seen elsewhere.

Can't wait for Monday - it's going to be such a productive day in the office

I like the look of this phone,

is it easy to put music onto it cos without the memory card which is easier is it easy to place traxx onto it?

is texting messages easy aswell?

how much are these to upgrade on o2 anyone know?

Posted by Jah
@miss uk

1. On O2 on a UKP30 line rental the W950 was UKP99
2. The file transfer via USB is very quick, much quicker than the K800
3. SMS - er....I use my M600 or P990 for everything else so can't comment on this

But, this is really very attractive and well made phone. The user interface is very quick and the OS is stable. If you're happy to use the stylus and wheel a lot then this device will be okay for you

@Dogmann

email sync works with the W950!

Posted by Dogmann
@Jah
Thanks for that, very strange though if you go to the SE site and the learn about section then choose Synchronization you get to two boxes as to what can be synced and what can't and e-mail refuses to go into the can be synced box. Maybe someone should let SE know?

Just got a W950i yesterday and transfered all my contacts, pics and ringtones from my K800. My phone is unlocked and unbranded and I will be using it on both 3 and o2 (UK). I have downloaded the MMS and web settings for both networks from the SE site. How do I switch accounts or set the default account for each sim - in other words when my 3 sim is in use, how do I selected the internet / MMS profile to use for that sim?
TIA

Posted by Miss UK
thanks for that i'll look into it...
ive got 3 phones to choose from by xmas Samsung D900, K800i or the W950i personally I like the souind of the W950i cos it has all the memory for music and it's also a P910i comeback having the stylus

I see in the pictures that it comes with a protective case, does it proctect the phone well or?

im hoping o2 wont be so mean with me with the price upgrading to it..
fingers crossed I can get it for £150 with luck

Posted by Jah
@miss uk

the case is really for the headset not the W950. Any chance you can get someone to get you a pair of SE's DS970? They sound outstanding with the W950. Also the SE headphones are okay but you should consider better quality headphones like the Sennhieser PX-100. By the way the FM radio is even better than on the P990 - it has a utility to get information on a track that you've heard.

Between the P990i and W950i

Which is an overall preference???

If an overall user would you say the P990i is the better choice as its a solid all rounder???

Anyone who has used both... Please comment as im considering the w950i... but I dont listen to RADIO.... I listen to sum music... not a lot.... I mix n match between features.... But I use a lot wifi while at home or where access is available...

I own the P990i.... May consider selling it to get the W950i... but not sure.

@Jah
Your help would be appreciated

the W950 is:

- very sexy
- the Walkman s/w is very nice
- music reproduction is superb
- FM radio has very good sensitivity and sounds great

But if you ignore the packaging from a functional point of view the P990 is similar. The sound quality differences are important for me but most people the P990 is perfectly adequate. I would always use the W950 with my P990 not instead of. And finally remember a 4GB Duo card for the P990 is much cheaper than a SIM free W950!

Hi Jah,
This looks like the leisure phone for me, I have a very large MP3 collection so it will handle most of my favourites when I am out and about, can you tell me is this like an Ipod e.g you can only play tunes downloaded from a specific source? Or can you just load any MP3 to it?
Is it much slimmer and lighter than the P990?
Does it support push email?
is its performance better than the P990?
What is the going price for this device?
Many Thanks
Nitro

300 Pounds BUY IT NOW Getting cheaper by the day folks.

Posted by SE-Naz
@PeterKay

I tried the W950i today... and at the same time the P990i

I prefer the P990i especially with all the added extras.... especially the WIFI feature... i love it..

W950i is decent.... main purpose MUSIC only... Also loosing value quickly just like the M600i did...

P990i is better... it does loads of different things

What you think???

Cheers
ENJOY

Posted by PeterKay
Between the 2 i'd go for the P990i too, plenty of features to keep you entertained and the W950i has no camera which is a down fall. WIFI for me is essential and i am quite surprised at the prices, they are dropping big time!!!!!

Posted by smair82
I couldn't get on with the keypad on the m600, loved the p990 however just fancied something a little smaller the w950 is perfect for me, the only thing I really miss is vijay singh golf

Posted by SE-Naz
tortally agree with ya!
P990i is much more powerful device once all the bugs are ironed out!

im using my P990i right now!

i though i would hate the P990i as its 2 big! i actually think its good in the hand

Cheers
ENJOY

@Nitro Fan

Wow many questions!

1. can only play tunes downloaded from a specific source? Or can you just load any MP3 to it? - MP3s, AAC and WMA

2. Is it much slimmer and lighter than the P990? - same size as the M600, so very small and stylish

Does it support push email? - not clear yet, and I don't have a Push email account

is its performance better than the P990? - faster as you can switch-off the transitions and less memory leaks

What is the going price for this device? - no idea about SIM free, but on O2 contract it is UKP99 with a UKP30 monthly line rental (12 month contract)

@smair82

had my W950 for about 4 days and no faults of any kind at all. What is your organiser firmware version?

@Peter and all
Really surprised at that price but then it is on Orange and not Sim free and also i doubt it will have unbranded software but all the lovely things Orange will of done to it. That has to make it worth at least a £100 less IMO.

Marc

Posted by PeterKay
Agree with you there Dogmann, really surprising these price drops especially the Orange branded ones. btw how badly are these orange W950i's branded?

Posted by Dogmann
Hi Peter,
I haven't seen one yet will try and get into an Orange shop tomorrow or Monday as really want to see just how much better the Walkman player is through my HBH-DS970 as i have said i think the sound is excellent through the M600 but need to know. Going by what Orange have done to the P990 icons down the left hand side i would be very surprised if its not the same on this phone as this appears to be Orange's corporate marking on all they phones they can.

Its not a keyboard anyone is familiar with - but use it for 2-3 weeks and you get the hang of it, especially as the keys get broken in and are less stiff. Then by the time you have this phone 3 months, you will not ever want to go back to standard phone keybaord. Honestly.

I am thinking about the P990 because I want a camera but honestly the M600i keybaord is something I will truly miss.

@W950i owners...

Hi... I noticed that the W950 doedn't let me access the menu even in FLIGHT MODE if the SIM card is NOT present. Screen shows "Insert SIM".

Ideally, as a smartphone it should boot up even without a sim.

Have you noticed this or anything different ?

Have been experimenting a bit over the weekend re: sound quality of the W950. After a lot of listening between the P990 and W950 I am now convinced that if you listen to AAC format music (e.g. ripped CD using iTunes) the W950 is so much better that I would seriously recommend you consider the W950 over the P990 if music is a priority. Also the more I use the Walkman s/w the more I like the W950. In my view the W950 is a good and gentle introduction to Smartphones for people who would normally not consider such devices...

Posted by waynep16
im not too impressed with sound on my w950.. it doesnt seem to go very loud. Even if i play with eq and put volume all the way up , using the loudspeaker it doesnt really wow me .. the new nokias have a louder clearer sound by far..

Posted by Jah
@waynep16

there is a difference between quality of sound and volume of sound. If you want volume then the W950 is probably not for you. But with the HPM-85 I can't listen to my W950 beyond 80% volume setting as it is too loud!

i understand, and agree, quality is far better and makes up for lack of sound, it sounds nice and not tinny.

Problems so far:

Battery life is shocking. I just had a quick 3G surf while the thing was plugged into the PC via USB and watched the battery deteriorate even as it charged. Ouch. I can only imaging how bad it would be with the bluetooth radio switched on and transmitting to a headset. I bet it needs to be charged every other day with only two hours headset use per day.

No RSS feed application in O2 version, at least. It doesn;t appear on the icon for multimedia (top left of main menu) but does appear when you move the cursor to it using the jog wheel. It looks like a bit of customising that has gone a bit wrong.

The headset connection for the supplied unit is a little tempramental. Today I couldn't get it to work consistently at lunchtime even though on the way into work it performed well. It kept on being dedected and not detected. Sounds like a dodgy connection to me.

The appointment alarm is a bit too insistent. It vibrates for ages when a quick text-alert style is what is needed.

I just have no idea how to get album art across to the phone. It's not a biggy, as I wouldn;t use it anyway, but there seems to be no clear way of doing it, and that irritates me because I neeeeeed to know.

I can't change tabs in the menus without touching the screen. I can use the phone one handed to navigate all the way through to watching a video, but if I want to swap between those stored on the phone memory to those in the media memory I need to touch the tab on the screen. Either allow me to do it all one handed or just don't bother. This goes for looking at call history too.

I want to change my front page shortcuts please. I don't want the radio there, for example, I want my email.

I finished the nightclub game already. It's easy peasy.

Some of the built in themes are terrible. One of them, which I quite liked otherwise, uses black text in black input boxes. DUH!

I don't want anyone to think I don't like the phone, I do. I love the fact that it offers to send a text when you reject a call or to set a reminder to call back. I LOVE the sound quality and like Jah says, the volume is ample even for the tube trains. The size and form factor are fantastic considering the huge number of features. I like the fact that it keeps a small menu shortcut on screen even in Java games.

Overall, great phone, but lots of annoying niggles.

All 3G phones have poor battery life. The W950 battery will not be at its optimum for about 3 weeks.

To change shortcuts use More>Replace

The W950 like the M600 has a touch screen because not all functions can be used via the keyboard

I have already reported that the sound quality is best when used with the HBH-DS970

But this is at odds with the claimed figures I have seen. 250hrs standby on UMTS. You reckon you could get away with not charging for ten days?

I appreciate that, but I'd still like to be able to use the phone one handed. the fact that for most things I can get most of the way, but not all the way, irritates me.

Great, except that's no good for the radio, nor does it help battery life. I don't have a problem with the sound quality anyway - the provided headset is perfectly adequate and doesn't need to be recharged every other day either.

I did consider buying one of these but overall I find bluetooth headsets more trouble than they are worth, and certainly nowhere near as convenient as the marketing men would have you believe.

Posted by Jah
@Buttoneer

I am getting nearly 2 days battery life with about 1.5 hrs of music over BT, phone on all the time and BT on 24hrs over 2 days.

The HPM-85 are the best wired headphones I used with the W950 - very loud!

HBH-DS970 can be used with FM, just plug-in the wired headset to provide the antenna and the music gets transferred to the DS970! And you can use the controls on the DS970 to switch between pre-set stations

How do you find the keyboard? I am getting used to it now after nearly a week.

Posted by OfficeMaven
Buttoneer,

As far as the battery life goes, it's great on my W950i. I'm actually suprised by how long it lasts while listining to music using my DS970 stereo bluetooth headset. I think what's putting folks off on the bttery life issue is that the level meter is actually VERY skewed.

The first 50% goes VERY quickly, but the remaining 50% lasts a really LONG time (with the last 10% lasting an AMAZINGLY long time!). Thus, I think folks are just seeing the quick movement of the battery meter in the first half and then making a snap judgment as to the whole thing being that way (when it's not).

Also, for the album art.... I have no idea why, but the silly Disc2Phone application that SE provides you with to add music to the phone doesn't support the addition of album artwork??? This is very strange since both the W850 and the W950 now support the displaying of album artwork.

In order to get album artwork on the phone, you'll need to use a program that will either embed the artwork within the proper ID tag of the song file, or you can simply manually add the artwork as a JPEG image (named "folder.jpg") to the the song's album folder on the phone's media memory. This way the Walkman player will pick up the album art (either embedded within the song files or within the "folder.jpg" image stored in the same folder as the song files on the phone) and display it for you.

Personally, I use iTunes and SyncMyPortable (www.SyncMyPortable.com) to copy all of my songs over to my W950. That way I get all of the proper folder organization set up for me and I get album artwork and M3U play lists as well. I have a new version of SyncMyPortable that I'm just about to release that now fully supports the new downloadable album artwork in iTunes v7 and the absolute paths required by the M3U playlists in the W950. It should be out in a couple of days and will work great with the W950, M600, P990, W850, etc..

I hope this helps some.

That is totally pissing me off too, its a phone feature and one reason why i bought it ... and even tho the icon is there there is no frigin program for rss feeds thats totally shit ! and im so pissed off about it

Hi all,
IMO opinion what is even stranger re the Disc2phone software is whilst it uses grace note for Album id and track tags as you say it doesn't add the Album art. Yet when using Sonicstage which also uses Gracenote but with this combination it not only gets Album id and track details but Album art also. I can not understand why this should be especially as on the W950 SE shots it shows all the albums with the album covers, why they haven't incorporated this feature on a Walkman phone and expect us to work out your own solution is plain crazy IMO.

@Jah whilst i accept using 3G reduces battery life i think your statement of
"All 3G phones have poor battery life."

and then go to say in your next post

"I am getting nearly 2 days battery life with about 1.5 hrs of music over BT, phone on all the time and BT on 24hrs over 2 days."

I wouldn't say that is terrible and on my 3G phone admittedly with an 1100aMh Li-Polymer battery i have no issues it lasts a day easy even with heavy usage of BT, WiFi, Web browsing, Video and music play, shooting video and stills plus of course some voice calls.

3G and battery life.

My wife's 2.5G K750 used to take about 5/6 days from full charged to run down and she left it on 24hrs a day. Her new 3G K800 never lasts more than 4 days. Same person, same usage levels, different phone technology.

Posted by Dogmann
@ Jah,
I accept 3G uses more power not to would make me a fool, but i hardly call 2-4 days even with average usage bad. Especially as i still remember my Motorola 8000s and the 3 batteries i needed to carry to last a day now that was bad battery life. Or the fact that we didn't need gym memberships if we had what was laughably called a transportable, but again here we have everyone's perception of what is acceptable or good being different. Not having a go just have a different opinion on this one.

That's useful to know, thank you OM. I'll keep an eye on that.

I had another problem with the phone today. I found that it stopped playing music and required a reboot. Symptoms were that I could flick back and forth between tracks, press play, but nothing happened. No sound. If I then used the stylus to drack the track progress bar halfway along the track, and then pressed play, the time counter would reverse back by one second for each tap of the play button. Very odd behaviour.
