Huge Sony Ericsson Portfolio for 2007

Here's what I can draw from those (improved) spy shots:

I like the Ai better now I always knew that SE wouldn't make any mistakes, so those earlier shots were earlier prototypes.
Still, the buttons are tiny, and the dpad looks like no fun to use. No flash for the camera (unless that logo is meant to light up) is a bit sad.
Looks wise, it's more of a grower. I'll like it quite a bit eventually, just like the K800 The silver one is much better; remember the black Ai has a completely orange back!
I never liked the X820, and the Ai is a much better looking device.

On the other hand, the W200 is looking very nice for a low end. Don't know why they had to put a joystick in though, especially because it's a phone.

UPDATE:

And look what I've also found!

Reflections of the devices which took the pictures, and both of them seem to fit the initial descriptions of two very big phones.

The first one looks like an N93 style clamshell, at least in the way that he is holding it, except it'd have to be an phone. Could it be the Euro version of the W44S?

And the second one looks to be the back of a highly anticipated phone - the Sofia. And the Sofia looks to be in red, just like the K610, and has a circular lens area.

Big stuff.

oh my goodness.... i am shocked.
I have always liked sony ericsson's designs. i thought they bring the best looking phones, but this portfolio... um.... not very impressed.
It looks too metallic I think, too much shiny silver things on it. The motorola RAZR, that metal finish was briliant, but this management of metal wasn't so good.
I think it is possible that when it is released the design will change. I really hope they change. The phone has good potential i think, but the design of the keys are .... not very good.
Other than the design, I think Sony ericsson has a very strong tech spec line. I like their new strategy of separating the Walkman line and the camera line.

That pic of the Ai looked sharp. Must be because of the CCD 5MP on the Sofia.

January can not come soon enough.

@shaliron

I can see you are seeing reflections in the phones. The on in the Ai could be a phone or a camera, but the reflection in the K800 has fingers aka a hand.

[*] K800 variant
Slightly improved specs but in a different form factor (very likely to be clamshell). Launched at the end of the year. True successor to the Z800. May also be SO903i variant.

[*] Canceled swivel
Rectangular white swivel. Larger than the 7370 so could've been W900 successor. Canceled to fit more mass market. Maybe changed to slider?

I can confirm these 2, the z800 successor went back to drawing board as the k800i and z610i are selling well enough. you can see parts of the work realized on the so903i. there're a couple of issues
1. walkman branding vs vodafone's (and hutchison 3's) music service
2. cost: if SE were to release something like s0903i outside japan, it'll be as expensive as sharp 903. the money went into the screen, the stereo speakers and the camera module now. will people still pay for it when Europeans are so extremely price elastic. the target crowd would be the 903 upgraders, might as well take advantage of Sharp since they're reacting even slower, and the crowd that is just done with the 903 contract.
3. supply: will there be enough Yamaha chips and 2.7"-3.0" screens? will the technology go outdated by the time the factories have saved up stocks for a global launch?
4. external panel design (and software to come with that): 2nd color screen? illumininated music buttons? or just flashy light effects? or the mirror OLED

the cancelled swivel looked almost like an iriver clix, a lot bigger of course, pulled off last minute when the sales manuals were in print. made way for the w44S. no promise of re-using the design. the thing was a bit flimsy and unpopular within the development team

update: ah might as well give you a glimpse of the cancelled device, does no harm really, you can reflect to SE if you really like it

good job... is this really with 's coz i cant see no logo there.

but a very good job supplyin us hard evidence.

Posted by Andrew7724
are you saying this unit is real and was cancelled!?!?!?

oh my goodness, this is much better looking than the previous shown with the metal finish etc. why did they cancel it? what's wrong with SE?

thanks for the pic anyway

Posted by xumdeo
it is indeed by SE, staff in London should have played with it too.
now would somebody like to confess?

the screen is 2.7", so you can predict how big this thing is, and how hard it is to make the swivel hinge sturdy

[ This Message was edited by: xumdeo on 2006-12-14 06:44 ]

Posted by rockygali
so thats why they cancel it? theyre havin difficulties attaching a sturdy swivel device.

how bout you? you have some firm insights about these... what are the reason for canceling... just because K800 are doin good sales doesnt mean they hafta stop from there... they could play around with more attachments right?

Posted by xumdeo
they realized that swivel is not the only formfactor that can be used when it comes to digital-TV devices

SE japan has a really strong sense of SONY in them, that the product has to speak loudest for the company. as you can see from all of the SE domestic mobile phones, they all have a really strong wow factor

SE at that time considered the swivel as boring, the swivel hinge is a problem, but the biggest problem is that they thought the first SE digital-TV phone must have something more unique, in order to capture a larger fan base. so they waited for the digital radio to become ready, and shoved everything into the dual-hinge W44S.

that's the story

eventually the W43S settled for a 12LED flashy external panel with exchangeable facets. (yes, the swivel phone is supposed to be called W43S if it were to be released, and the 12LED thing was only used for marketing analysis)

the W44S went for the dual-open mechanism, trust me the final product is already looking much much much better than the old prototype (I think i've posted pics of that old proto on mobile-review before..)

both of them are (and going to be) bestsellers, the so903i is also really popular, just right behind sharp sh903i, but that's expected

What r the specs of ´Ai´?? It seems like a slim w800/w810 with probably worst cam (2.0mpx without autofocus). I didn´t like the design... it looks cheap and unfinished and may i say what an awful keypad solution. What happened to the good old days when still used to make really confortable keys like t630/k700? The ´ai´ is probably just an opportunity for to cash on the same platform for the third time, using a diferent design. The only thing that would make these phones more than a simple grasp for money would be the presence of big internal flash memory (like 4gb), then it would have something new tech wise and it would look better for the brand and it would have a least ONE thing new. However, i believe this phone is adressed to the mid/low end market so it will probably be cheap and have no flash memory. K800 is still the best mass phone at the moment and it will continue to be for several months if things continue like this.

Do you guys think this will be the final product! or will it still be changed in design by ??

Posted by intelegent115
i would like SE to make a phone in size of T66 or T600 with a basic specs.. i think if they could make it very small and nice looking for a decent price of cource it could be a hit. Not only top notch phones sell!

Posted by goeul
Ai is not ugly, it is extremely ugly. I really don't know how they could come up with this design.

Posted by goldenface
@Xumdeo

So what was Ophira? Was that the cancelled device? Was it 3.2mp?

We can see why the cancelled device was flimsy as the pivot was above the at the very top handset.

@goldenface

if you remember the k800i had similarities to the already released at the time s903i (dont know if thats the right model number, jap phone though with 3.2mp) features wise, etc...

So i would have to say the Euro Bravia phone will be similar/based on the w44s, so should be either a flip/hinge, or even a swivel, even though said no more swivels....

I'll assume you're referring to the SO902i. I am sure that was a smartphone but the K800i wasn't far behind in the cam department.

Its my guess that the W44s will be heavily restyled for the Euro market and it will have to have a hinge and/or swivel to accommodate that huge screen anyway.

That W44s is definitely a Sony.

Come on its not all that bad

They will certainly come up with a better design in the future, but as its a first for with a thin phone, its not that bad.

Regarding the last pic, is it just me or is the phone curved at the top?

Looks curvy all around. The screen size would be much bigger if they removed the black outline surroundings or made it thinner.

Posted by shaliron
@xumdeo
Thanks for that. Really like the LED lights. I'm a sucker for gimmicks like that

@SloopJohnB
The Ai was said to have specs of the W850, but it looks more like a K610 in specs.

@goldenface
It looks like it, but it's just the lighting methinks. The said shot shows that the phone is perfectly flat.

@mustafabay
Yes, the hand is holding something:

And a real camera doesn't take such blurry images. Only camera phones have an element of blur due to the lens size.

I'm convinced that that is an SE camera phone of some sort.

Could be the next HandyCam type phone being held!

@shaliron

In the bottom pic it seems like it has a round, silver lens cover like the S700i.

Also the bottom pic reflection looks like the back of the K700i !!

Posted by >500
and also towards the middle of the phone some writing looks to have been rubbed out. Maybe it says , very possible....

Posted by shaliron
@christiano
I think Eldar was talking about the Ai.

@goldenface
Yeah, the original and the best lens cover design. One of my favourite SE phones.

@PeterKay
It does doesn't it. Wouldn't have noticed that, but the phone looks more squarish.

Posted by goldenface
Plus, the right end of the phone in that pic looks to have some sort of edging, as if it has a sliding keypad or something. Strange!

and i hope that sofia has better sound than k800
at least like Z610

Posted by PeterKay
Thats my Sisters name

Hope it is, want to see a picture of the handset, can't wait

Posted by shaliron
If it is the Sofia, the image quality isn't too shabby. Very much like the I-Mobile 902's picture quality.

People that is a N95! It is a Nokia N95 that made that pic of both Ai models. Check the back of the N95 and compare then with the pic below.

MR

also in top right hand corner of the phone next to the finger, i cant tell 100%, it sort of looks like the new connector for charger etc, on the side....

@MR

Booooo! Hisssssss.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Don't mention the word Nokia in this thread

Posted by shaliron
@MR
You are very right. The blurred out text does look like NOKIA. I can distinctly see the 'A'.

Bummer

EDIT: Which means the other phone is probably an N93i.

:S Ok it is a device from a brand from Finland. It starts with a N and ends on okia. The device is something starting with a N also and ending with 95.

Ok?

And I called the picture quality 'not too shabby'. Damn

On second thoughts...

Put "pics of Sofia" in google and see what you get

Posted by dr_thug
Sofia speculations turned out to be N95!!!

AI looks cool...but the buttons look tiny...is it meant for fashion concious girls??And is the back side black rubber???And how thin is the Samsung ultra??Is AI thinner than Samsung ultra?

I would like to see some designs along the lines of the canceled swivel phone.

Posted by shaliron
@dr_thug
Thin, as in 9.4mm thin. Not nearly as tall or wide as Samsung's X820, so overall it's a smaller phone.

And I like the back material. Sorta like the W950's material.

Posted by PeterKay
Why would someone with inside info be using a Nokia phone to take pictures! This should be banned i say totally banned...

Posted by BobaFett
any specs of the k610 successor?

Posted by >500
i have liked this design since the first day it was shown... Too bad its fake....

And the 'cleaner' versions shown further down the page are also very nice:
